You'll find a fabulous Pete's Frootique, stocked quite differently from the one downtown and right next door is Cristall & Luckett Wine Merchants with a great wine selection from around the world. Prices range from $13 to ...well high and will go with any delicacy you've purchased at Pete's. As for fashion, there are clothes for kids at Bib & Tucker, as well as a number of shops for men and women that are unique and not your typical mall selection. One of my favorite shops is Uncommon Gear a very eco friendly place to buy toys, games and gear from strollers to every other nurturing thing kids need. Several home decor and foodie focused shops like Cucina Moderna, Backyard & Veranda (that has lots of stuff for indoors as well). There's even a branch of Stokes (always has sales and fun kitchen gear). The far end of the mall has travel agency, shoe repair...and more, plus access to Canadian Tire. And lastly, if you're into local handicrafts, there's a market just for you on Sundays from 11-5.

That being said, it has some unique stores and a pleasant artsy vibe (especially on the end of the mall that houses Pete's Frootique). The mall is mainly centered around Pete's Frootique as a prime destination, and prime destination it is.. It's somewhat comparable to "Whole Foods" in the US albeit on a smaller scale, but it makes up for its small size with a huge variety of food items that you are unlikely to find anywhere else in the city. The mall also has a variety of the standard cell phone carrier stands, a (too?) small Indigospirit bookstore, Mark's work wearhouse, Hallmark etc. The food court is small but the quality and health consciousness of the non-chain food vendors here makes it a very attractive to stop by for a meal... especially if you enjoy fresh ingredients and want a break from the monotony and excessive food processing offered by the standard fast food chains.

Yeah, it's that higher end chain but this store bears little resemblance in terms of organization and display to other Gymborees I've visited. Even my seven year old daughter commented on the disarray saying it was like a garbage dump but with clothes not garbage. And this was on a quiet Monday afternoon. I can't day that I find the staff that friendly, but there is the odd decent sale and that kind of makes up for the lack of service. And one other thing. There are no dressing rooms. Sure, babies don't need to try on clothes but sometimes, it's helpful to have a place where say, a six or seven year old could try something on so you don't have to buy it and return it.

Someone from the Dartmouth location had the Halifax store hold an item for me. I brought my daughter to try it on, as she's very tall and thin and most companies don't make clothing that fits her. I asked where the fitting room was . . . and was told there wasn't one. My shy 10 year old had to try pants on behind a rack right in the store. Unbelievable and unacceptable. The staff were embarrassed that their location didn't have an appropriate changing area. I'm not sure if the company is to blame for this oversight, or the mall itself is responsible. All I know is I'll never, ever shop at the Halifax location again. If the Dartmouth store doesn't have the right size in the item I want, we'll simply look for something else.

It makes a big difference when you're looking through the racks to have a friendly face telling you about the deals rather than feeling like you're in the way, which I've experienced at other thrift stores in the past. There are two floors to this shop - today the second floor was wedding themed, which was amazing. There were also formal dresses, jewellery, handbags and suits on display upstairs - anything you might need if you were going to or planning a wedding. It was fun poking through the wedding dresses and seeing right in front of you how much styles have changed throughout the decades! Downstairs there is a "front" that has racks of clothing and some jewellery and in the back, you'll find some homewares and yet even more clothing. Shoes, winter coats, and kids clothes are back there. The prices at Hand in Hand are amazing!! You won't find any almost-full-price goods here. If the item wasn't priced it was $4, and Friday's are student discount days! (Good to know!) We found an amazing hot pink pineapple print dress...definitely not for me, but one of our friends was so excited to be getting it. This is the kind of thrift store I enjoy being in - it really feels like you could find rare treasures here if you just had enough time.

I left without buying anything, which is a shame because they do have really cute things here for great prices. Salespeople, ESPECIALLY in this line of work should really know better than to make rude comments to expecting parents. I can certainly infer the translation of what she was saying to be "wow, you're huge and look like you are about to have the baby now!" Not helpful. If there was a way to post a 0 star review, I would! I am appalled at the lack of customer service,…read morethe attitude towards customers and the harassment and arrogance of Tatum especially and her mother, Mary. My daughter-in-law , Maggie, purchased her wedding dress ( a beautiful gown at a very good price) a few years ago but after posting a 3 star review for the body-shaming (she is a size 6 ) and comments made to her in the dressing room out of ear shot from me or her bridesmaids, Mary and Tatum decided to call ME to get "control" of her and have the review removed. They phoned a few times, crying, yelling and saying I was destroying their business. Tatum then posted on FB to say that "it was on like Donkey Kong"... Again, I did NOT write the review. My daughter-in-law, justifiably, then changed her review to a 1 star after the very disappointing and upsetting treatment I received personally from them. Fast forward to August of 2019. We try to support local business and the wedding was being held at a local business, the pictures being done at 2 local businesses, the photographer, etc. also all local entrepreneurs. My daughter was getting married on October 5th and I had FORGIVEN them for their conduct and treatment and decided we should message them to request information about bridesmaids gowns. The chat message on FB was cordial enough and I said we would be in that afternoon to look. The message I then received back was this: "To be perfectly honest with you Tina after the last episode I'd prefer you not to come to my store. It was a huge upset to me and I can't feel that way again." I was BANNED from the store as was my daughter for something I did NOT do and for their unbelievable and poor treatment of ME. They lost sales for Mother of the Bride, Grandmother, Mother of the Groom and Maid of Honour and 3 bridesmaids! Their dresses are beautiful, the prices are reasonable but I would not be doing business with them given the experiences I have had. Tina Mumford-Kehoe, Retired NSTU

I visited some Halifax Shops in October/November to get an idea of what I liked and price range as was dissatisfied with the pushy attendants. A couple of friend recommended heading up to Windsor to visit Tatums. I called ahead and they said to visit around six months before the wedding so they would have time to order in the dress and do alterations. I made an appointment and we made the drive in January. We were greeted at the door with huge smiles by our personal attendant Karrie and the owner Tatum and were asked if we were ready to get to work. We headed upstairs and Karrie asked what I was looking for. She sent us to look at the discount rack (because you never know according to her) and started to pull dresses for me. After trying on 2 dresses I knew that I had found a winner. I still tried on 6 more dresses to be sure and Karrie was very patient and encouraging me to try everything just to be sure. I did find out from the owners that the majority of wedding dress are under $2000 which is cheaper then in the city. It was a day of fun and happiness. Since picking my dress I have been back three times, once to help find dresses for my mother and mother in laws, once for alterations and once to pick it up. Everytime after that first time they greeted us by name and like we were old friends. There are pictures of past brides who had bought dresses from them and I was encouraged to send along a picture after the wedding. This is the place to go for personalized service and great prices. My sister and best friend are planning on visiting here for their dresses when its time. It is well worth the drive and they have an amazing selection of wedding, mothers and bridemaids dresses.
