So after struggling to find a decent Chinese restaurant in the berbs, I did have high expectations for this gem. Although the street appeal probably isn't anything to woo at, and inside is a tad bit dated, yet is still humble in a family restaurant kind of way. I feel it may have been the owners who were working the front of house, and they were both lovely. They clearly have been in the business a while and did a good job and making us feel comfortable, and giving us a little giggle as well. The menu had heaps of choose from. Seemed as if there were a few extra options compared to other basic Chinese restaurants, including a traditional and western dessert menu. I had the Chicken Satay dish off the chef special menu. It was amazing. The sauce was flavoursome and certainly didn't seem like out of a jar type of thing. It was served with broccoli pieces as well as a little burning flame in the middle of the plate. My partner had the Sizzling Steak Mongolian style dish and the pieces were tender and juicy, with lovely sweet and tangy Mongolian flavours through-out. The plate was also served with vegetables. I love this place. It's my new found gem. I've been searching a while for a nice place to grab some quality Chinese food, and I think I've found my stop. This place isn't anything designer or high-end perhaps, but it still possess a charming old-school look and humble home-style meals, which is something I look when dining at Asian restaurants in the berbs.

The staff is just about as friendly as you can get.. Service was quick and prices where very good. Food was good, I have had better but it's defiantly the best Chinese food in the area. My son has asked me if we can eat there again every night since trying the place. This will become our local Chinese takeaway from now on.

My Yen (or as I like to call it, My Yum) is your perfect Saturday night takeout option. They have a wide variety of takeaway dishes including entrees, chicken, pork, beef, noodles, seafood, rice and soup. On this visit, we opted for spring rolls, BBQ pork (entree), crispy chicken with plum sauce, vegetables with cashew nuts and some serves of steamed rice. All for about $30!! All the dishes were so yummy, with a special shoutout for the crispy chicken with plum sauce! Tender and to die for! Our order was ready in a mere 15-20mins, and the lovely people at the restaurant threw in a bag of those deliciously addictive prawn crackers for free which was a nice a touch. Next time you get the 'I Can't Be Bothered Cooking' feelings...try My Yen out for a tasty dinner.

Well, I actually do that most evenings, but haven't had the pleasure of My Yen for a while....until now! It is still brilliant, and I enjoyed every morsal of my old usual order. There is just something about slightly oily and gooey fried beef with an all encompassing sauce that you can't resist licking out until the container resembles its pre-filled form. I have had the Garlic Prawns and a few other dishes in the past, but I keep going back to the Beef. Fortunately the smell will be with me (in my car) for some days to come!

It has a modern fit out - a pleasant surprise for an asian restaurants - in a funky red and white and really friendly staff. I've eaten here with a group of mums and nabbed one of the tables with a lazy susan - great for spinning around shared dishes. I've also eaten plenty of takeaway and when I've been really lazy, taken advantage of the super cheap $3.50 delivery (within 3kms, minimum spend $30). Those in the know say it's authentic Cantonese cooking. The menu is extensive and while I haven't loved all the dishes, if you stick to the usual suspects you won't be disappointed. Most ambitious dish? Basil Cheese Chicken - "tender pieces of chicken tossed with basil, onion with mild chilli soy bean paste on a melt cheese bed and served on a sizzling platter." Don't let that put you off. My favourites are Shredded Roasted Duck Soup for $5.50 and Ants On Greens - "minced pork, sun-dried shrimps and mushroom wok seared in white wine and oyster sauce and served on a fresh greens bed. Don't worry, no ants at all!" for $12. And if you're feeling like a sweet finish, the pancakes with pan-fried red bean custard are delish. Oh, and kinda important, it is fully licensed with a good selection of wines.

Eggplant hotpot is my dish of choice, it's something I find few restaurants really do well, and Rice excels at getting it spot on. Lunch specials are excellent value - the beef noodle was a feature on my desk at work many times. I worked with the wife of one of the chefs for a while, and can confirm it's all very authentic Cantonese :) The true test of a chinese restaurant, I took a chinese work colleague there, and he was impressed with both the menu, and the meals we received - he did spend a good five minutes discussing exactly what he wanted in Cantonese with the waitress, mind you - and I believe we had something that wasn't actually ON the menu, but it was all good :) Bookings are a must on Friday and Saturday nights, and recommended on others. Parking on Glen Osmond Road is a pain - make sure you tuck your mirror in, it's a rat race along there. If you go here for a business lunch, let them know and they'll make a point of getting the food to you promptly, or let you know if a dish will potentially take longer.

But ... service as soon as we arrived was outstanding. Friendly, but professional. We started off with vegetarian spring rolls which were your basic spring rolls - tasty, not greasy at all. Wine list was quite extensive too, which is a bonus! For mains, we shared the BBQ Pork Ribs with Plum Sauce, Satay Beef and Sizzling Chicken with Garlic. My partner's 6 year old ordered what all 6 year olds would probably order ... chicken nuggets and chips. No, not very Chinese, but I guess the restaurant knows what a good kids menu should include! All our main meals were outstanding - and yes, I was surprised! Especially the BBQ Pork Ribs, which could be 'cut' with a spoon (and had hardly any bones). I swear the meal wasn't as good as this last time we visited (which was about a year ago) - I am seriously impressed, and already planning a return visit. Oh, and 3 adults and 1 child for a total of $85 (and that included a glass of wine for each adult) - well, that's even better ;)
