Come to Empire just after 2am on a Friday night, or just after 1am any other night, and you will get to see the exact opposite to what you see 7pm the same night at the university library. Students that have been studying hard all day and gotten drunk in the evening are thrown out of the pubs at close and head straight to Empire for Chips and Cheese to satisfy their appetite and to get some fat lining the stomach again, falling over one another, talking loudly with friends and generally acting very amusingly ridiculous.
What is admirable about Empire is how well it copes with this situation! Being right across from the Students' Union, it gets nearly all of their hungry customers, and yet service is usually quick, friendly, and the food surprisingly good. Only downside - the prices are clearly a response to the intoxication level of students, I doubt many students would pay so much for those Chips and Cheese completely sober, and the annoying music that is playing in the shop late at night. read more
