We were the second seaplane to land so we practically had the island to ourselves (other than the few people that had camped overnight). It was amazing wandering the fort, snorkeling (him, not me), and just enjoying the spectacular views with very few people around. True facts…read more Clarence Higgs Memorial Beach is an artificial beach and is really the only beach on the island besides Fort Zachary Taylor Park. Clarence Higgs beach is more of your traditional beach vacation where you can rent umbrellas and towels, play beach volleyball (there are only two courts), rent kayaks and snorkeling gear. The downside is that it isn't as picturesque as Fort Zachary Taylor Park. But that park doesn't really have any amenities. Overall, it's a decent beach. As the only traditional beach vacation spot on the island, though, it's going to be on your Key West itinerary at some point I hope.

The water is quite shallow and you can actually walk down a couple of feets. However, by the evening, the high tide takes over and the water level rises. A very good place to sit back, relax and enjoy the ocean. It is just one block away from the Southernmost point. However, it is not as crowded as the Southernmost point. There is a cafe nearby - Southernmost Beach Cafe - where you can have drinks and food. There are many more restaurants just one street away and if you are looking for fine dining, there is a Japanese restaurant Ambrosia, which we tried, and is really good.

We arrived early and found parking near the children's playground area, and walked out onto the white sand beach with only a few other AM visitors. We did not utilize or investigate what looked like umbrellas and beach chairs for rent, and instead waded out into the bathtub temperature water with our masks and snorkels. The swim area stays shallow farther than we SoCal folks are used to in our beaches, and it is roughly enclosed by a break wall of sorts, and a long walking pier with stairs down into the water for access. Still plenty of small snapper, grouper, and other fish can be seen out near the structure of the pier and break wall. After a warm morning in the water, we left our towels on the beach and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Salute (see other review) before packing up and exploring the other great parts of Key West. We found this beach to be cleaner than Smathers beach, and maybe more laid back. Also of note: there was a marked sea turtle nest on the beach surrounded by caution tape and signage. Yet another wonder of the keys for us touristy visitors who live in Sunny SoCal with her cold California current ocean temps.

The served drinks promptly and expeditiously upon boarding the sailboat. The band was lively and sounded great. We stayed on the top level of the boat and the crew walked around and refilled drinks which was so nice. We didn't have to walked down to the bar and could just enjoy the weather, the sailing and the view! Kudos to Captain Willie and his entire crew for being such a delightful group. They deserved all the tips!

Ticket guy Mark assured us pool noodles would help and water is calm and expert swimming is not required. Boat ride with Todd and Anne started fine, but snorkel time? Disaster. Anne acted like she was dragged off the street, no manners, just snide remarks, eye-rolls, and forehead smacks at a fellow tourist fumbling with their wetsuit. No help getting in the wavy water; instead, she snaps at my struggling wife: "Why do people who can't snorkel even try?" (I'd love to see her skydive after 10 mins of instructions!) Todd was meh, nice enough but obsessed with tips, yapping about it nonstop. Snorkeling itself was great, but these two don't belong in service. Avoid!
