We had a good meal at Emily's Byre. I had the Cullen Skink (Scottish fish soup) which was delicious and had a very unique taste; the Chicken Biryani, which was prepared expertly with great flavors and textures; and wrapped with the Kulfi, and Indian-style ice cream that was thoroughly enjoyable.
The meal, however, was marred by a sense of being rushed to finish. We had an 8 pm reservation (for which we were called 90 minutes in advance with a warning that the restaurant was busy so be on time, and it was two-thirds full) and halfway through the meal we were asked if we were having dessert because the kitchen would close if we did not order soon. Apparently the restaurant closes at 10 and the manager wants to turn out the lights at 10! (The website says last reservation is 9:30 pm, so not sure how dinner would be completed in 30 minutes.) We were also asked then about breakfast reservations and told 8 am or 9 am were options. We asked for 8:30 am and were told by the manager that 8:30 was fully booked. We arrived at 8 am to a restaurant two-third full and never at capacity. The food and service was excellent, the "vibe" very stressful for an inn deep in the Scottish Highlands where one intentionally goes to relax and unwind. read more
