It was a great example, since I think many of us push ourselves too hard when injured, instead of patiently letting our bodies heal. I see a lot of injuries as a rock climber (and have had my fair share as well), so it's refreshing to see the right balance of pushing yourself and self-care. She pushes you just to where you need to be without going too far. I love her style, a more gentle Hatha yoga, which focuses on spending time in a pose to explore it and get a deep stretch. Holiday explains poses and sequences very well, giving adjustments as needed and she pays attention to every student. I wish I still lived near Hawthorne so that I could come to her class every week. My mom, who still lives close by, goes to Holiday's class every week. After trying different styles and instructors, Holiday by far remains my favorite. If you get the chance, check out her classes. They always end in a nice, restorative shavasana. Also, if you're a teen or a teacher of teens, you get a discount. Holiday teaches a three hour workshop once a month on the first Sunday too.

This is something very special and unique in the world of yoga available here in the West! I find Perumal's approach to be completely unique, but deeply rooted in the original traditions of yoga. In other words, he pays close attention to students' proper form in poses and assists in adjustments as necessary so as to help the student get the maximum benefit; however, his method is also adaptive. I guess it's because of his Martial Arts background and the injuries he endured, but he tries to get students to find adaptations that are best for their own bodies, including any injuries, so as to assist in healing and overall well-being. I have never had the chance to do one of his retreats, but he has told me that the objective there is to have students coming in not even necessarily feeling so great, but leave energized and raring to go! Classes tend to be very small and personal, at least for now, so this is an amazing opportunity to receive personal instruction from an internationally recognized teacher, and prices at Yoga on Yamhill are the lowest in Portland! I would also suggest that as someone who will admit to having been a corporate exec, if you are in that extreme stress go-go-go lifestyle that Yoga with Perumal should be an ideal choice for your lifestyle, one that will leave you ready to face the challenges of your business with the energy and drive you need!

There's a beautiful courtyard and and inviting stairway up to the studio, but I walked it brimming with trepidation, fully expecting a room full of judge-y yogis snickering at my inability to hold an upward facing downward salute to the dog (or something similar). That was simply not the case. I was greeted by Christina who put me at ease immediately. She is incredibly welcoming and immediately set me up to get started, pulling out a blanket, cushion, bricks, and showing me where to lay my mat. She inquired about conditions I might have, why I was there, what I wanted from the visit, what activities I do, basically getting an idea of what she should assist me with so that I could get the most possible from my class. And the class was a great one. The ambiance is solid: dim lights, hardwood floors, soft music. There were 5 other people in the class, seemingly of various skill levels from injured and healing to definitely a regular. Christina did a good job ensuring we all had options to tailor the practice for our own needs; she frequently stopped by to give direction and her technique in instructing is incredibly honed. I left the class and felt like my body had been stretched like never before, but not in a painful way, I actually felt incredibly strong. My muscles weren't sore (and after covering roughly 45 miles hiking and running in the past 4 days, they were sore when I went in). They were revitalized. I am fully aware how hokey that sounds, but it's true so deal. The verdict? I'll definitely be returning and can't recommend it solidly enough.
