I've had acupuncture a few times before and it really helped my creaky-ass knees, and when I moved…read moreto Portland last year I started looking for some help with sciatica, which came out of nowhere and oh my god is awful, IYKYK. I tried one place where it helped a bit but there just wasn't the vibe or connection (which is essential for the healing arts), and then I wound up at Maine Center for Acupuncture in mid-May when the left leg was flaring so bad I wasn't walking normally or able to get a good night's sleep. The first thing that happened on meeting Ryan was just that I felt *hope* about my situation for the first time: the way any healing practitioner responds is so important, and he listened to me and asked great questions (some totally unexpected!) and then assured me that I would get better. That's a basic assurance you really need at times. If you haven't had acupuncture before, let me explain a bit: you may feel all kinds of different ways, and the experience will vary each time. If something is really blocked up, it might be intense--I'd describe my first session for the sciatic nerve as akin to having a drain snaked--but there's energy and movement, and then relief. A day later I wasn't limping for once, which was a great start. Other times you'll have a floaty little trip. I've been continuing to go since then, and that's the other essential part of acupuncture to know: the benefits build over time. By now the pain is totally gone--I repeat, GONE--and we've shifted the treatment so that it's more about balance and mood, and the results have made me feel like my body and mind are both back on track. If you've got an ailment, acupuncture can address it. That's a lot of info, I know, but I've also heard so many people say that the idea of acupuncture makes them nervous, so I hope it helps! Also, if you think it's all a bit too woo-woo? Ryan is not only a compassionate healer but he's down-to-earth and hilarious; you'll also run into all kinds of people there (not that you're actually going to talk, b/c you're all gonna be needled up and zoned out). Which gets to my final point: the emphasis here is on *community* acupuncture, which means *affordable*. (You can also book private sessions.) The community setup is a peace-out room with 5 recliners, and appointments are staggered so that different people shuffle in and out; depending on the time of day you might be there alone, or with up to 4 other people. This was my first encounter with something like this and I'm always perfectly comfortable. Just another reason out of many to give Maine Center for Acupuncture a try--I very highly recommend it!

I was never interested in acupuncture. It's not that I was nervous about pins being tapped into my…read moreskin (after all, I'm certainly the tattooed up gal); I was turned off by the "new agyness" of it all and was seriously skeptical about it's effectiveness. Then again, who am I to judge a practice that's been happening for thousands of years? Since I believe you should try or do something before formulating an opinion - and at the gentle persuasion of a good friend - I gave in and went to see Ryan at Maine Center for Acupuncture. Talk about a revolutionary moment in my life. I arrived and was instantly greeted by Ryan - not the pristine looking monk I was expecting - who was wearing shorts, had some facial scruff, and possibly one of the most welcoming, friendly smiles I've ever seen. Despite filling out the three page medical history for him, we sat and chatted for a few minutes like old friends about my lifestyle, things that were bothering me, etc. Suddenly he gets down on his knees and starts pressing my knee. "You said you have tension in your shoulder?" he asked. I shrugged it off, "Sure, but I think it's because of yoga, so I'm not super worried about it." He presses his thumb into the skin of my knee and asks, "What about now?" Suddenly... no more tension in my shoulder. Afterwards, I was brought into a quiet room next to his small office where there were (I think) eight very large, very comfortable recliners in a u-shape. I was told to turn my phone off, put my bag behind the chair, take my shoes off, climb into the chair of my choosing, and just relax. There were four other people in the room (of varying ages and lifestyles) at the time, all peacefully reclined, pins sticking out of various parts of their bodies, paying no mind to the fact that I was there. I got into the recliner, and Ryan in a hushed voice asked me if I was so busy that my thinking wheels turned and turned all the time making it hard to make decisions. I said yes (how did he know that?!), he pushed a spot on my elbow then asked, "What's your favorite season?" Fall. "What's your favorite color?" Blue. Both times I answered without thinking, entirely without hesitation. I just blurted out the answer. Is blue my favorite color? Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't know. I quite like shades of green and browns... but apparently it's really blue. Anyway... that was the moment I was a believer. Since much of acupuncture is personal, I'll spare you some details (like what I specifically had worked on; but, I can tell you that for many days after I felt FABULOUS). If you have any worries (emotionally- or physically-based ones), tension, weird medical issues of any kind, headaches, arthritic, etc... you have no reason not to go see Ryan at MCA. It's INSANELY affordable ($20 to $40 for each session - you pick how much you can pay each time). It's comfortable (Ryan is the kind of person you want as your GP, your CPA, your car salesman, your Whole Foods clerk. And, it's relaxing... like, more relaxing than massages.

I was looking for someone who does acupuncture and came across Dr. Kathleen Bartlett in Scarborough so I gave her a call and I set up a package with her. IT'S THE BEST CALL THAT I COULD OF MADE! I think she is absolutely GREAT, I told her she was like Wonder Woman because of her excellent work. I have had jaw pain for 10 months and in just 2 visits the pain is gone and now being about 3 months later still no pain! I have a back pain that I have had for several years now, other doctors said it was nothing but working with her the pain is going away. She is also woking on me with Edema on my leg and waiting to see results on this, just started treatments on this. My biggest reason for coming here was I want to get off my blood pressure medication that I have been taking for years and between her treatments and the Chinese medicine my readings are SO much better so I know it will still take time but hoping next year I can throw those pills away for good! She is such a blessing to me, she is professional, caring and down to earth, love my visits with her. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone wishing to better their health! I just can't say enough, I truly think she's the best!!!!

Her approach to Health is as unique as her unconventional persona. If you are looking for an alternative to the traditional Western medical approach, I suggest you schedule a consultation with Dr. Bartlett. I fondly refer to her as 'The Needle Wizard'!

I found her online, took a chance, and am so happy that I did. Although we saw uncertain and inconsistent results at first, one of the most significant things Alexa did for me was show me the empathy, open-mindedness, and dedication to helping me that doctors had not. Where doctors had been dismissive, Alexa was supportive; where doctors had been narrow-minded, Alexa was receptive and creative; where doctors had been dispassionate, Alexa was committed. Later, when I returned home from college again, I began seeing Alexa again for help with a series of health problems, including night sweats, digestive problems, fatigue, and general exhaustion, that I thought might be connected to an earlier diagnosis of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases that I felt remained unresolved. Instead of being distracted by an exact diagnosis, Alexa focused her attention on my specific symptoms and how to address them at their origin. Her approach is holistic and comprehensive. A huge portion of our first session was spent carefully going over all of my symptoms and experiences and lifestyle choices to get a full picture of my needs and what I hoped to get out of working together. My visits to Alexa helped me realize the full extent of my emotional state regarding my physical pain and symptoms - desperate, frustrated, disheartened, even angry - and to acknowledge their connection to my physical state. The Origin Center is a beautiful respite from the chaotic world outside and it helps you tune in again to yourself and your body and mind. Alexa is knowledgeable and reassuring, and optimistic while still being realistic. For example, she gently told me that I might have to come to terms with the fact that I wouldn't be able to eat gluten again (however, my digestive problems since then have vastly improved and, through careful experimentation in the past few weeks, I have been able to eat gluten again without any adverse effects, which is incredibly exciting). Alexa's passion for her craft and compassion for her clients are clearly evident. Even before I lie down on that acupuncture table, I already feel calmer and more grounded just because of the atmosphere of the Origin Center and Alexa's own energy. Alexa has a presence that is soothing and grounding. She listens and empathizes and makes me feel seen and heard, and she is also not afraid to point out my own role in certain negative patterns I may have fallen into. Every time I leave the Origin Center, I feel rested, calm, and generally renewed. Alexa helped me feel not only physically better, but spiritually more balanced and better equipped to make the necessary changes in my life. My RLS and my night sweats have been largely dormant for the past few months, with only a few flare-ups that always feel improved after a session, and my digestive problems (including periods of time where I was constantly nauseous, vomiting, or experiencing intense abdominal pain) seem nearly if not completely resolved. When I started seeing Alexa, I felt physically as well as emotionally exhausted. I see a vast difference in my state of mind and body now than when I first started seeing her. While there are certainly things I hope to work on more, such as my depression and general mental health, Alexa reminds me rightfully that there are certain changes that only I can make to my own life. Since graduating college, I had felt particularly lost, unfocused, uncertain, unmotivated, and generally unenthused about my life and my plans for the future. Though I am still learning to navigate those stormy emotional waters, Alexa helped me remember the power as well as responsibility I hold for making my own changes. I recently said to her, "I have no idea where I want to go and no idea how to get there and no idea how to figure out how to get there." Alexa told me, "Language is important and we need to pay attention to the words we use. You may not have figured it out yet, but you do have the capability to figure it out." I don't think I realized how much I needed to hear those words. I hope this review will inspire others to start seeing her, because she has so much to give. Thank you Alexa for everything you have done and continue to do. You are awesome!

I also really appreciate her holistic approach--there's a genuine sense of support around energy healing and overall well-being that makes each visit feel deeply restorative.

I tried a different chiropractor in Portland and they did a very simple assessment, and their diagnosis was that I was healthy and just needed routine upkeep?! I then went to Dr. Lou and was so impressed by and grateful for such an extensive assessment process. His process involved a postural screen, a measurement of muscle tension throughout my spine and nerve compression my spine, but also taking into account everything I had to self report. He took a look at the x ray from my previous doctor and spent a long time reviewing the results with me, discussing it from both a scientific and holistic approach. He made plenty of time to answer my many questions. He created a treatment plan for the next 3 months at which point we would re-evaluate. I have noticed such a difference! I remember when I first starting seeing him I would get up from the table and be amazed at the lack of pain in my neck and back. The feeling at first would only last for a few minutes, but as I continued treatment this lack of pain would last longer and longer after each office visit. Now a year and a half later I just occasionally come in. The front office staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful, Dr. Lou is fantastic, and they also offer acupuncture and I've had several great deep tissue massages here. Finally, both of my parents who live out of state were having major back issues and were planning on each having second surgeries on their spines. I asked Dr. Lou how he talks to people who are skeptical about chiropractic medicine and he gave me some incredibly helpful tips for how to approach the topic in an effort to encourage my folks to try a less invasive option before more follow-up surgery. His tips worked and my skeptical parents feel better and are able to be active again after only 3 months of chirpo and PT instead of being in recovery from another surgery. I deeply appreciated Dr. Lou taking the extra time to give me his insight (he even offered to review their cases/information!). My last favorite thing - he's a music lover and always has great music playing :). I highly recommend Dr. Lou!
