I'd give more than 5 stars if it were an option! if you're looking for chiropractic care and acupuncture, LOOK NO FURTHER! Dr Lou and his staff have made such a difference in my life. I had a frozen shoulder ( which is quite painful!) that began a few months after I took a very hard fall. Dr Lou treated me with adjustments and acupuncture. Frozen shoulder takes 1-3 years to heal. I was moving my shoulder with much less pain and slowly increased range of motion within a couple of months! My sports medicine physician recommended the acupuncture for the pain. I'm here to say it works! I'm 8 months into my frozen shoulder diagnosis and I'm 99% better! Range of motion is back and the pain is minor at worst. Dr. Lou is truly a miracle worker. These last few weeks, I've experienced the most pain in my life... I'm talking not being able to breathe, sit, walk, lay down, or stand without being in excruciating pain. Dr. Lou and his practice have been a game changer for me. I have had chronic back pain for at least 7 years and just before moving to Portland found out that I had the beginnings of a bone spur and other serious structural back issues that needed to be addressed. I tried a different chiropractor in Portland and they did a very simple assessment, and their diagnosis was that I was healthy and just needed routine upkeep?! I then went to Dr. Lou and was so impressed by and grateful for such an extensive assessment process. His process involved a postural screen, a measurement of muscle tension throughout my spine and nerve compression my spine, but also taking into account everything I had to self report. He took a look at the x ray from my previous doctor and spent a long time reviewing the results with me, discussing it from both a scientific and holistic approach. He made plenty of time to answer my many questions. He created a treatment plan for the next 3 months at which point we would re-evaluate. I have noticed such a difference! I remember when I first starting seeing him I would get up from the table and be amazed at the lack of pain in my neck and back. The feeling at first would only last for a few minutes, but as I continued treatment this lack of pain would last longer and longer after each office visit. Now a year and a half later I just occasionally come in. The front office staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful, Dr. Lou is fantastic, and they also offer acupuncture and I've had several great deep tissue massages here. Finally, both of my parents who live out of state were having major back issues and were planning on each having second surgeries on their spines. I asked Dr. Lou how he talks to people who are skeptical about chiropractic medicine and he gave me some incredibly helpful tips for how to approach the topic in an effort to encourage my folks to try a less invasive option before more follow-up surgery. His tips worked and my skeptical parents feel better and are able to be active again after only 3 months of chirpo and PT instead of being in recovery from another surgery. I went to Dr. Lou for a while back when I lived in Maine and he really helped alleviate some of my chronic headaches. He made it sound so logical - everything is connected and when you relieve certain pressures somewhere, it will help pain elsewhere. I started by going three times a week, the slowly only needed to go once a week, then by the end of it, I was having few headaches and going every couple weeks. I have been bringing my fiancé to this practice for almost two years. I can't say enough positive things about it. We started coming here together after another driver on the road hit my fiancé's car at an intersection and caused her many issues. Because of the nature of her injuries along with her underlying condition of having Lyme disease, she was in a great deal of discomfort and almost constant pain. After only a couple of months, Dr. Lou got her back in good shape. A few months later, disaster struck again in nearly the same type of situation with a driver running a red light and striking my fiancé's vehicle and causing her further injury. While the front desk people are very attentive, the chiropractic 'office' is a wide open space, very cluttered and the chiropractor seemed distracted and his work on my body was too fast and quite rote and generic. I am a new patient of Dr. Lou with no prior chiropractic or acupuncture experience. I chose to seek chiropractic care after reading about its effectiveness in the treatment of allergies and sinus issues. I also hope that it would provide a healthy foundation for stress reduction and over all improved health. I'm only one adjustment in but I can tell you with that one adjustment, my right ear is opened for the first time in years. I was referred to Dr. Lou by other reviews on YELP and had 2 reservations, both of which have been dispelled by my experience, but in the event you have them too, I'll share: Dr. Lou is too cool and I will not be able to relate to him at all. After going to the website and seeing the chiropractor to the stars stuff I though, OMG, I should just cancel! Not to worry. He's very grounded, human, approachable and passionate about what he does. Very easy to relate to and the office is quite comfortable. He seems to loves families and children. My first visit to his office the reception area was filled with pregnant women and a family with a toddler bounding about. Everyone was happy. Not a grump in the whole place. That's got to say something. It will hurt. It did not hurt. It is startling because (in my world anyway), it isn't every day that I lie down on a table and let people manipulate my body. I would equate the startle to the puff of air at the eye doctor. It doesn't hurt in the least but it makes you jump. It will be interesting to see if over time I will become less startled. In the interim, it's a nice trust exercise for this control freak. I think those were my only reservations. Will come back and update as I move forward with my treatment plan. Oh, one last thing from a practical standpoint, the insurance verification of benefits was spot on and thorough! Thank you for that! I have to update this to reflect current events. I am now 6 months pregnant and had severe headaches (which you cannot take anything for), lower back pain from being pregnant, and then slipped in wintry weather with the grace of a hippopotamus. After consistent adjustments the blinding headaches are gone. I will be seeing Dr.Lou for the entire pregnancy as he keeps me healthy and feeling better!! He is an expert on pregnancy! I've been going to chiropractors for several years now, and paying way more than I can afford (no insurance and making $10/hr). But it's worth it to me, because they take away my pain. Dr. Lou did a good job treating my neck issues, and for that I thank him. But I find it very disappointing that I wasn't told about their sliding scale program until I told the admin. assistant that I couldn't afford to come back any more (this was after several visits and hundreds of $). In my initial visit I explained to Dr. Lou that I wasn't making enough money to pay for long-term maintenance treatments. This would've been an excellent opportunity to tell me about their sliding scale service. So be sure to ask them about this if you decide to go. read more
