A visit to the "City Different" in Santa Fe, New Mexico would not be complete without a good dose of Hatch Green Chile and Flamenco dancing. Fortunately, you have several options. However, if you are interested in seeing some of the best performers, do make haste to see the beautiful and talented La Emi -the founder of EmiArteFlamenco - and her fellow dancers. La Emi started dancing at the age of four - most of the best dancers do - and has studied with the famous Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts (ISA) and continues to do so - as well as serve as an instructor. The very amazing Maria Benitez herself was a mentor to La Emi. By now, you know where this is going. We were staying in the Lodge at Santa Fe which has traditional cabaret seating that hosts Emi and the show. They also dance at the St. Francis, and El Farol which are nice venues. We went out of curiosity and it was one of best things we have attended in some time. They have a lead female (Emi) and an accompanying male dancer and three other dancers plus a singer and two guitarists. I believe the dancers represent a local school/group and the lead has been doing this for over 20 years. The music, the expression hand gestures, facial expression and body shapes are all essential parts of the story being communicated in the dance. It was simply spectacular and I would recommend this evening of entertainment to anyone. Ole indeed! read more

Emi Arte Flamenco is such has wonderful dance program. My children are in the beginning flamenco class and Ms.Emi is amazing! She is inviting, energetic and the children are engaged and participating from the beginning of class to the end. This is the perfect combination of movement, music and introduction to dance and as an extra perk they are learning and using Spanish! read more

Specialties

EmiArteFlamenco Academy will be offering the Spring Semester of classes starting February 5th and ending with Recital on May 25th. This is a 16 week semester with one week off for Spring Break, the week of March 19-23, as we do follow the Santa Fe Public School schedule. Registration can be done at the studio on the first day of class for new and returning students or a re-registration form can also be downloaded from the website www.EmiArteFlamenco.com

Established in 2014.

EmiArteFlamenco is produced and directed by Vicente Griego and La Emi. Launched in 2014, this dynamic company is comprised of an ensemble of local and international artists, dancers and musicians. It embraces artistic excellence and is renowned for embodying the power, passion and virtuosity of the art of flamenco. The company's mission is to promote the history and culture of traditional flamenco through cutting-edge performances and classes, captivating people of all ages. The performances and classes also serve to bring the community together in their love for flamenco and supporting the arts in Santa Fe.

Meet the Business Owner: Emmy G.

La Emi began studying flamenco at the age of four with the Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts (ISA). At ten, she began working with the Institute's youth company, Flamenco's Next Generation. At age 12, La Emi began teaching within the Northern New Mexico public school system. In 2006, she began teaching for Moving Arts Española and ISA. La Emi has traveled to Spain to study intensively with Carmela Greco and other top artists including José Galván, Juana Amaya, Yolanda Heredia, Ivan Vargas Heredia, Orombo, and Rocio Alcaide Ruiz. She has performed under the direction of Carmela Greco, José Galván, and Torombo and at major venues and events including the Carmela Greco Seminario de Flamenco y Danza Española in Madrid; Cueva Los Tarantos, in the Sacramonte of Granada; in Sevilla at the Teatro Alameda Festival Flamenco; and the Café de Chinitas in Madrid. Currently she is teaching at the EmiArteFlamenco Academy, as well as performing in many venues throughout the country.

We liked it very much, and…read morehere are a few of the reasons why: 1) Their sprung wood floor is wonderful for dancing -- easy on the feet and back. 2) The people -- teachers and dancers --are very nice and friendly. 3) The dance numbers are very short -- about 1 1/2 minutes apiece. Why is this good? For dancers from lower altitudes, the exertions of fast dances can be leave you winded in a hurry. Shorter times mean you have more energy for more dances. 4) Dancers were warned when upcoming dances were "advanced" (quickstep, Viennese waltz, etc.). This caveat meant that only experienced dancers were on the floor for those numbers. I have been to studios where the DJs would say "Viennese waltz is just like a regular waltz. Just go faster!" -- bad advice. We went to Dance Station USA on a Thursday evening, 7:30-9:00. The 9:00 closing may see a bit on the early side; but for us, it meant plenty of time to enjoy a late dinner.

This truly is a MUST see show when visiting Santa Fe. The venue is intimate and charming. The dancers, singer, and guitar players are fantastic.
