A group of four of us had a great time during a day tour that we attended in October. Our group was part of a much larger afternoon tour that included around 30 people. Pulling up to this place is kind of ominous. It's just such a massive structure in the middle of nowhere. We arrived before our designated time (I recommend arriving a few minutes early in case you have to use the restroom inside the property nearby) where the owner/tour leader, Cindy, escorted us inside to pay and sign the guest book. Cash only. $10/per person. We started the tour in the large day room on the main floor of the manor. Cindy gave us an extensive history of the property, told us what we could/might expect from the tour. From the day room we moved throughout the manor to different rooms and levels. Most spooky was the basement where the kitchen and dining room used to be. I think the entire tour lasted around an hour. No one in our group of four experienced anything paranormal. The manor is absolutely huge, thus there is no heat or water. Cindy explained that when she and her husband first purchased the property they quickly learned how expensive the utilities were, so there are none. When they bought the property in 2010 it looked nothing like it does today. Paint peeling from the walls has really aged the manor and is a result of not having the utilities turned on. Despite this, the peeling paint really adds to the overall eeriness of the place. Dress warmly if you're visiting during the cooler months. There is an overnight option for a nominal fee, which I would never do. Not because I'm afraid, but because there is no heat or running water inside the manor. There is a home located behind the manor that overnight guests can use for restroom purposes, sleeping, etc. I love that this place is being preserved and that the public is being allowed inside. Fascinating that Edinburgh Manor was still operating as a mental health facility through 2010. Lots of documents remain from 2010 like newspapers in some of the rooms. Residents still in the manor at that time of the closure were relocated elsewhere. Honestly, this might be the most unsettling part - lots of mementos left behind from the residents who were forced to move. Some didn't even take their clothing. Time came to to a standstill in this place. Totally worth the trip! I went into it not thinking I was going to be scared, and I wasn't. I was more curious about the history. If you go into it with the 'I want to see something I can't explain' attitude, you might leave a different kind of review. Cindy leads most of the tours herself and maintains the day tour and overnight schedules. Hands up for her. It has to be so much work. Lastly, you must make a reservation! Don't just show up and plan to get inside. Follow the Edinburgh Manor Facebook page for day tour openings and more. We made an afternoon of our trip to Scotch Grove and visited Grant Wood's grave in close-by Riverside Cemetery afterward. I enthusiastically recommend.

My team rents the property for 12 hours and we have not had more than 5 people in our group. Do not book with the ghost hunt businesses that sell hundreds of tickets for one investigation, it's way too expensive and you will not get the full experience. They are just trying to make money off folks that don't know any better. When you have fifty to a hundred people, all in different groups, on all floors, the chances of catching any evidence is slim. There is way too much noise caused by people, both the promoters and those who attend do not take Paranormal investigating seriously. This location is often referred to as having "evil or demonic" spirits. I don't believe that's true, I believe people who say that are being over-dramatic and have never been in the presence of a demon. I believe, the spirits there are irritated with all the people invading their home, asking the same stupid questions and trying to provoke activity. On our first investigation, we caught a crystal clear EVP in Room 200 within a few hours of being there. That EVP can be found on my Paranormal blog at https://daamparanormal.com/

Kathy even came to visit dad and the family while he was in hospice at another facility. It was very touching. Such wonderful, kind ladies. It's stressful to move at any age but when you are in your 90's it can be overwhelming. We looked at several senior living communities in the area and chose TG. Currently, she can eat some things on her own, but still needs assistance. She suffers from Dementia and Parkinson's. Due to swallowing issues, she has trouble with bread products and harder stuff such as raisins. My sister had been creating a menu with things crossed off and items circled for about 3 months. We like to work with her in the privacy of her own room. The last 2 months have been difficult. The staff is obviously NOT happy with our arrangement. There have been times when I had to request a different tray, as items were incorrect. As have my Dad at lunch and my sister at dinnertime. Staff has yelled at me with people in the dining room that I could not sit with my Mom. Even though my Dad and sister had been doing just that occasionally. Most of their anger seemed directed at me. Customer service seems to go out the window, as no one there has any idea that when people get upset they may raise their voices. Or swear. Today, I walked in and my mom was sitting in the Dining Room with a pile of pancakes or such in front of her. She was drinking coffee. I said 'let's go back to your room'. I retrieved her menu and went back out. I walked up to the counter and waved it and said loudly 'my Mom could choke on bread. It's not on her menu'. A gal behind the counter told me Mom has the right to say yes or no. Seriously? DO they ask all of their customers suffering for dementia the same question? My Mom can't even recall saying yes or no minutes later. It seems almost to me that the Staff is having pow-pow's and trying to come up with new reasons to frustrate us. Today, I learned my Mom needs to be 'supervised'. Two people came to my Mom's room and the gal said 'you need to calm down'. Now, I do know that IF you want to de-escalate you would not tell someone to "calm down". My Mom could of choked and died. There is nothing they could say that would de-escalate me. The gal turned to leave, and with her back to me said 'Have a Great Day!". Hmm. Wonder what she had wanted to say instead? SO... today, they kicked me out. Because I told them it was the wrong meal and I said a swear word. My Mom could of choked and died. They won't even admit it. Take you own Mom and Dad to them at YOUR OWN RISK.

If you are entirely healthy and need no help of any kind, it is a lovely facility with lots of wonderfully planned activities thanks to Larinda, the Facets Director who took over that position last summer. Prior to Larinda, Facets was just OK. The care given for Assisted Living used to be decent but has crashed to neglect levels. Housekeeping is definitely surface only, they have ruined my father's clothing doing his laundry, items have disappeared, the care contract has not been maintained, medicines have been improperly administered. A man was killed due to neglect in the horrendous memory care unit last August and another man was severely injured on January 31st of this year, also due to neglect in the memory care unit. Unfortunately, I received the dreaded letter that she's leaving West Branch. If I could follow her to another location locally, I would! It's becoming a thing that PCP providers aren't sticking around. I had one for 25 years with Mercy. Dr. Loeb was amazing! She retired in 2019. The next one at Iowa City Family Practice was awesome and she left after a year to specialize in anemic patients in 2020. The third PCP with Mercy canceled our meet and greet due to illness and I wasn't able to schedule with her again, but with another in the office that I liked. However, she too left after a year. The fifth one was with Iowa Health (sadly Mercy was taken over) canceled after a nice meet and greet, due to family issues, and rescheduling was 4 months out?? I finally landed on Lynette! Was excited and looking forward to the level of care that I'd had with my first two doctors/PCP. Now I'm tasked with finding someone similar to Lynette Rice. It's becoming a game that I'm not interested in playing. Whoever lands with Lynette Rice will be fortunate! I hope I am able to painfully find someone similar to her. How that will happen, I do not know. It's Groundhog's Day over and over, paying copays just to meet with someone to see if you mesh well and then they leave. Wishing Lynette the best, wherever she went!!! She is terrific! Her staff is terrific as well. They all made me feel heard and seen, which is not learned in the medical field.
