My fiancé sustained a fractured wrist in a fall, splinted at a local urgent care center, and presented to EmergeOrtho, Ashton Rd., Wilmington, where she underwent casting by a PA named Nicholas Stanwick. After waiting only 10 minutes for treatment, Mr. Stanwick obtained a detailed history, conducted a thorough exam, including multiple x-ray images, and then carefully applied a multi-level cast with the able assistance of a professional casting technician. What greatly impressed us, besides the skilled, experienced, empathetic, professional orthopedic care, was Mr. Stanwick's clear and concise explanations of his findings, treatment plan and risk-benefit analyses of the treatment options. We highly recommend Mr. Stanwick and his casting staff and couldn't be more pleased with the care they provided. read more

Just needed an MRI, instead got an X-ray (not needed, muscle issue) and a promise to call with an MRI appointment time. No call two days later so I call and get a voicemail, three more calls and two more days have passed and still no one will schedule my MRI. Mismanaged and poorly run. read more

My husband woke up with excruciating pain in his heel. We decided to go to EmergeOrtho's urgent care and they were incredibly efficient! He submitted his insurance information and medical history online during the drive over, and within 5 minutes of walking in the front door we were in an exam room. They took him for X-rays in the next 5-10 minutes, and the PA was in to examine him shortly after. We left with a diagnosis and treatment plan within 1 hour from start to finish. I've never experienced such efficiency in any medical setting, much less in an urgent care practice. read more

On the day of my appointment that had been scheduled for over 2 weeks ... I received a message on their portal (and not even a phone call) that I needed an OK from my PCP that my blood pressure was in the normal range. Unacceptable to receive tbis notification roughly 1 hour before my appointment. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is horrible. I started having severe pain in my right hip a couple years ago. I was finally able to get my insurance and get an appointment with emergeortho in Asheboro NC. Dr. Nathan White is the doctor that I very unfortunately have been assigned. The first visit I had with him was April 8 2026. He did xrays of my right hip, and showed me that my hip has severe arthritis and the arthritis has worn down the joint. Then he proceeds to tell me that because I smoke cigarettes that he cant do hip surgery until I have stopped smoking for 3.months. Then he told me that I could schedule an appointment with him in July to come back and he would schedule surgery. So I quit smoking. Called the other day and made an appointment, the appointment was today. I told him that the pain has gotten worse and during the exam of my hip and leg I was hurting so bad I was crying. He had no compassion what so ever. He then sends me to get xrays done of my back. He comes in starts showing me that I have severe arthritis in my lower back and says that its more than likely because of my hip. But instead of scheduling me for surgery to fix my hip he says that I have to get a hip injection then I can come back 3 months after that and he might do the surgery on my hip. But he thinks im too young to have the surgery done. My whole problem is that a hip injection isnt going to regrow the bone in my hip. But he doesnt care. Its all about money. Im 41 years old this isnt fair at all. I cant do anything that I used to be able to do because of my hip being messed up but cant get this doctor to understand that. read more

Wrote a highly detailed negative review for EmergeOrtho on their website but they are too cowardly to display it and continue to claim a rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 (possible only because they erase/don't display any negative reviews). They have also made it impossible to leave a Google review -- I'm assuming because Google will not allow them to remove negative ones. My original review focused on the lack of bedside manner during my first ever MRI. I went back to try to update it with equally poor experiences with orthopedist + subsequent cortisone injection. My complaints are consistent -- zero explanation of procedure logistics + zero bedside manner + treating patients like pieces of meat on a very fast conveyor belt. I have cancelled my follow up appointment with the orthopedist and shifted my care to Wilmington Health. Coincidentally, I'm starting nursing school in January -- as I learn the ropes I'll be sure to keep my experiences with EmergeOrtho top of mind as examples of what NOT to do as a medical provider. read more

I'm not sure what has been going on at Emerge Ortho recently, but to say I am sorely disappointed is an understatement. To make it brief... I have called over 20 times, only 3 times has someone picked up the phone. I was put on hold by an operator & was disconnected. I had left 2 *urgent messages. No one called back. I have tried to leave 4 messages from insurance approval, department admin & the actual P.A./nurse & have received only 1 return, after 7 days. I have been in pain but have had no immediate care for that. Besides going into the actual office & demanding someone speak to me, I dont know how else to get in touch with the personnel I've been assigned to? When I need them most, they are MIA. read more

i want to start by revealing the true experience i had with emerge ortho. first off. sugery was in may2025. the surgeon hammond was very stand off-ish. he was not interested in answering my questions his nurse answered some of them. i understand they do this every day but this was my first-time and scared and upset.. so i didn't feel welcome and was.rushed i to surgery. after surgery the dr. hammond did not even stop.by to check on me. this is not his nurses job. payments: i told them i needed time.to pay my balance.. they said ok. during recovery i was alone and nobody to help.me remember things. the pain was awful.. iit was worse that childbirth. so about august 2025 i started having exacerbation in my lumbar pain. called to see.someone at emerge, i received a call back and here is what they said...."we have refused to see you. because you owe us money." we need to.pay the remainder of your bill. i.am.on ssi and can't even pay my mortgage. i started selling things to complete my balance. i never received a 1.year follow up visit. i'm still in pain. so for many reason. i reminded them that i need to be on a payment plan..they said no, your in.collections...... now thus was only 3 months after my surgery. so please beware of how rude and unconcerned about their patients welfare. they only care.about filing insurance and getting their money. fuck emerge ortho. and dr.hammond read more

I had Cervical Spine Fusion Surgery on Monday January 6,2025 at New Hanover Hospital. Dr. Mark Rodger & Stephen Free-PA did my surgery. I must admit they are the very BEST!!! Dr. Mark Rodger & his assistant Stephen Free too their time & took excellent care of me!!! They kept in contact with my family as to what was currently going on & after surgery. They explained everything so very well to the family & to myself once I was replaced in my room. They are extremely knowledgeable with their job! If you are having neck pain, or lower back, I highly recommend Dr. Mark Rodger & his assistant Stephen Free at Emerge Ortho on Shipyard blvd. They are the very BEST!!! I give them five full wonderful stars!!!!! read more

NO PATIENT LOYALTY, COMPASSION. DR. BOYD. I had knee surgery in SC but came to Wilmington, NC to rehab with PT. My primary care doc is also in SC. The problem is NC PT provider (Novant) won't honor my SC surgeon's PT prescription. Dr. Boyd with EmergeOrtho has seen me in the past for cortisone shots. So I contact Dr. Boyd's office to ask if he would provide a prescription for post knee replacement surgery PT. His office barely managed to call back two days later to say, no, that it's "inappropriate" for me to ask. They offered no information, alternatives, etc. just "No, we haven't seen you in a while, and we won't help you." They didn't suggest that I go to anyone else who could help me (such as an "urgent care" or Emergency Room. (That would have been the humanitarian/decent thing to do.) When I asked why, the lady got testy, could not intellectually defend herself, and ended the phone call. Emerge doesn't appear to be interested in helping people in a bind. I wonder what it takes to get them to see or help a person, when the person really needs them. Healthcare is broken, in part, because for-profit outfits like Emerge Ortho don't care. read more

MRI Experience: The Worst Non-Invasive Test Ever Last Wednesday I had an MRI scheduled for the mid-morning at the 8115 Market Location. It was - hands down - the worst non-invasive diagnostic experience of my life. As a physician I tend to be more analytical than most, and this one was horrific. Forget that even though your GPS will get you to the facility - there is no signage out front as you stare at an old building that looks like a 50's motel, but as you approach the building, you see several "EmergeOrtho" entrances, none marked "imaging" or "radiology." Fortunately, I found the right door, checked in and, thankfully, had no paperwork to complete (in a single week I had gotten six reminders to check in and fill out the same forms), and was called almost on time by a tech at the door motioning me to follow him outside. The adventure begun - he led me all the way around to the back of the building, near a dumpster and uncut grass, to an aging truck. He unceremoniously led me into the MRI space, and gruffly told me to "dump your stuff" in the locker and take my position on the MRI table. No conversation. No customer friendly concern. "Here's your ear plugs - you'll be in there for 22 minutes." I was sucked into the magnet (luckily I am not claustrophobic) for almost a half hour while the unit make a racket that sounded like a concrete drill breaking up concrete on the streets of downtown Wilmington. The noise was deafening and didn't stop for almost a half hour. When it was over, the tech handed me a trash can and gruffly said "throw them in here." No concern for how I felt after 30 minutes in a noise deafening tube; he didn't offer to help me off the table (I was feeling a little woozy), and then he unceremoniously dumped me outside the truck in the parking lot. I was still woozy, but I managed to find my way back to the car. Needless to say, I would avoid this facility at all costs and if you are ever scheduled for a procedure there, be very afraid and run. Clinical Appointment Experience: Can You Spell Incompetence Last Tuesday I had a follow up appointment with the PA-C I had been matched with in order to review my MRI study for low back pain and sciatica. I must have had her on a "bad" day because she was gruff, curt, and bluntly direct. She reviewed my MRI results hurriedly, completely ignoring the fact that I was a physician. "You need a steroid injection," she growled. I asked her an obvious question: "what is the success rate for TFESI at Emerge Ortho," I asked. "I don't know," she answered hurriedly. In fact, nationwide - for males - the success rate is about 49%. I then asked her the complications. "I don't know; we have none," she shot back, almost laughing. In fact, the stated complications are bleeding, infection or nerve injury at the injection site. Transforaminal epidural steroid injection side effects may include: Numbness or weakness in your legs or feet. Finally. I asked her if there was local anesthesia. For some reason she laughed derisively as if that were some kind of stupid question. "No, you get a local anaesthetic " she quipped. Now she was correcting my medical terminology. albeit incorrectly. read more

Emergeortho is a very pretty office. That's about all they have going for them. The nurses are nice enough, but they are severely limited by the poor service provided by at least one of their doctors. Doctor Young Lu is condescending, patronizing, and doesn't listen to his patients. When I went in the first time, He talked over me as I was trying to explain what my issues were. He then told me it wasn't scientifically possible to be experiencing what I was experiencing. He recommended a course of treatment. I told him I had already been through that and it didn't work. He told me that didn't matter, I was going to have to do it again, because he wasn't the one who ordered it. He prescribed medicine I can't take due to liver issues, after I told him I can't take it. He ordered an MRI, that's fine, but when I went for the follow-up visit he was running more than an hour behind, no one said anything about it at check-in. When I asked if there was a problem, I was told I was next and it would only be a little while. They then called in 3 more patients in the next 15 minutes. If you do to Emerge ortho, make sure Dr. Young Lu isn't your doctor. You won't get any kind of help from him. If I could give negative stars I definitely would. read more

Please find another practice that will give the patient the RESPECT they are due. EmergecOrtho does NOT return phone calls from patient. Expect a minimum of 30 minutes before patient seen. I have been to the Shipyard Blvd location several times. The doctors are great, but not the scheduling department. My surgeon at Rex Hospital said that I needed am abdominal MRI I asked if I could have it done in Wilmington because I live there. The order was sent in on Monday. I called every day until Friday and left a message. No response ,on Friday I drove to the office and was told they don't do abdominal MRI's there. I have to go somewhere else. Why could they have not called me back to tell me this? Extremely disappointed in the lack of response. read more

I'd give 0 stars if I could. Won't work with United Healthcare even though they state they do. Predatory business practices by trying to force you to pay out of pocket instead of file with your insurance. Will never go to such an incompetent healthcare provider again. read more

Saw Ryan Doughtry which is a PA, for my wrist and i thought he was really good, was sent home on motrin and Tylenol, which was fine, and i started PT and everything was good. But when the swelling would not go down and it is painful all the time to the point that i can't sleep i called them everyday for a week with no response till today when they call and say no they aren't going to help me. so tell me why it took 7 days??? I received the worst treatment by Dr Hannum and his staff that I have ever received ! A real big shot nurse practitioner David Summerfield is the one who actually made me choose to find another orthopedic surgeon ! He is arrogant , rude , he absolutely does not care about the patient at all ! I made a comment and he screamed at me saying " we choose who we help and who we will not help " ! In his warped mind he is a god of some kind ! They wrote things in my file that I found out about that were simply not true ! Talking about things they had instructed me to do and things that we never discussed but put comments in their notes that I never said !! Going here made me feel like they are in business to herd people through like cattle !! I do like Dr Jolley who is what you expect of a doctor ! He drains my knee every 6 months and cares about me as a human being !! Stay away from Dr Hannum and his staff to avoid the mistreatment that they will put you through !! God bless !! read more

EmergeOrtho - Wilmington - Shipyard - I just looked at the X-Rays of my hip before the doctor came in ! I knew I would need surgery ! - Occupational Therapy Near Me - Wilmington, North Carolina

I had established myself a patient in advance hoping that when I had a recurrence that I would be able to get help. The PA I saw was not thorough in explaining options especially while I was in intense pain. No useful pain management was offered and I left without adequate help or follow up. Will not be returning as they are not good listeners. read more

The way Emerge Wilmington is run is pitiful. Doctors are all double booked. Wait times are ridiculous.? Want an XRay? Took 2 weeks. I am stting waiting for my 10:00 am appointment and it's close to 11:00 am? Emerge's motto is one patient at a time. They need to change that! read more

Follow up appt after shoulder surgery. Checked in via text day before. Arrived in the parking lot and was greeted by a staff member who told us we needed to go to the other location because they had a fire 4 days before. We get to the Ashton location & wait 2 hours. ( it would have been longer but I left) Never guessing we would be at this appointment for so long I had another Dr. appt I had to get to. I asked the nurse how many ppl was ahead of me. She said 10 ppl, then 10 different ppl for the xray. That's when I told her after we wasted OUR time and loss of wages. 2 weeks later.... Arrived to appt back at the Shipyard location. They said Dr. McIntire was running 45 minutes behind .. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Review on Ruth Anderson... definitely would not recommend. NO bedside manner.. before I could leave the room I was in tears Bc of pain & she told me I should be 100% pain free.. Emerge Ortho is all about the money. Nothing about patients read more

If you have a lower extremity injury you need to be ready to stand for about 15 minutes while you're checking in if there isn't a wait. Check-in takes a while, and the counter is designed for standing so there aren't any seats. I had a really early appointment and I had to wait over 40 minutes to see the doctor and it turns out that he didn't even come in until half an hour after my appointment time. They never actually gave me a diagnosis and recommended physical therapy but I wasn't given a copy of the orders, I think because they want to keep it all in-house. They said PT would call me to schedule an appointment and they didn't call in any form of a timely manner, after having to call and wait to be called back for nearly a day to schedule the first appointment. I'm a dancer and gymnast and the doctor wouldn't even tell me a timeframe for when I can get back to those and my regular workouts. I also had my name spelled wrong even though I spelled it for them and the receptionist had my driver's license in her hand while she was filling out my paperwork. read more
