Wow... this was a tough 4. 5 stars for the First Aid/CPR/AED class and the instructor, Matt Brady…read more 3 stars for their administration and process. And because the 3 burned so much of my time, I had to pull my overall down from a 5 to a 4. Course - I've been certified FA/CPR certified for 18 years with AED added on in the last 5. This renewal, I decided to try a different educator. There were some updates and changes to best practices, which were highlighted throughout. Classes had a good blend of video learning, hands-on practice and validation, and live lecture with Q&A. Solidly 21st century. The instructor was engaging, had lots of personal experience, and had a great energy. It's the best I've had so far. There were a couple of small points missing that gave me pause, and I brought them up during the first aid part. Small but important things such giving lots of ice-cold water or sports drinks to someone in heat exhaustion or heat stroke can be very detrimental if they are very dehydrated (from vomiting to even sending them into cardiac arrest). Oh, and the Hillsboro campus has a single-serve, custom-grind Aramark coffee maker... super sweet! 5 stars. Challenges/lesson that may be helpful: Admin - CTC is a DBA, so there will be a discrepancy between your bill, the training provider, and the certifying authority. By the time I called, the booker said the Portland class I was hoping for wasn't available anymore. Instead she suggested a similar class at the Hillsboro location. I didn't know where that was but she said it would be on the receipt. It wasn't. The desktop site is much more functional than the mobile app, so don't rely on it. Google maps couldn't initially find it the Hillsboro training location. Instead it pointed to a nearby Hillsboro fire station. I pinned the company and address, so maybe that will improve the score so it shows up for others. Here's by biggest admin thing - So by default you apparently get an eCard. That's fine. What is not mentioned is that there is a whole long legal-ease agreement with privacy policy by the AHA that is over 3,600 words. Really? I've never had to do anything so ridiculous to get proof of my training completion. It took another hour on the phone between calling both the AHA and CTC to arrange to have a card mailed to me. Too much time. Next time I'll know better.

The gal who helped me had her hair in her mouth and told me that the bigger needles hurt less. I worked in the medical field and when she said that to me, I just thought, "Did you really just say that? You're joking. This is a joke." It was so painful I cried out. If the techs at Kaiser can take your blood and you almost don't feel it, why can't the Red Cross Folks, who do this all day, day in and day out, be trained as well? It should not have hurt like that. There was no option to opt out of "donating" your blood to scientific testing. NO OPTION. Either "help save lives and you must donate to scientific testing, including third parties who we sell your blood to (this was in the paperwork that you have to read before you do it), or do not help save lives." When I told the gal that when my step dad died, he required a lot of blood and that's why I was doing this, she said, "I'm sorry... Did he make it?" And, finally, the "snacks" were mini oreos and unhealthy foods. Not even an orange to replace electrolytes and fluids. I mean, we give you our blood and you give us... the inability to opt out of having third parties scientifically test our blood and some mini oreo cookies, cheese its, greasy/stale peanuts, and small Mrs. Fields cookies. If I needed to replenish my blood and health, why would I eat an Oreo? To poison myself? At the end, the gal said "You saved three lives today." And I looked at her, the gal who I'd just told that my step dad died, and thought... Well, I personally witnessed someone require a lot of blood and die in front of me. So... no. You have no idea. I will never donate through you again.

They're not even high school classes. They're "community" classes which attract learners with a very wide variety of abilities, backgrounds, and motivations. The public assumption that being a native speaker of a language somehow qualifies a person to teach that language seems to rule here. Before a scheduled sojourn in a foreign land, I was delighted to find an available class in the language of that land, and cheerfully signed up. I did the homework and attended every session. My teacher was not a credentialed language instructor but this person was generally punctual, knowledgeable and sincere. The textbook was good. My overall disappointing results were not due to any lack of good will on the part of students or teacher. The issue was that because the instructors are not trained in how to handle mixed-level classes, my teacher wasted a great deal of time (my time) in trying to cater to those unprepared (didn't do the homework) or those who have no idea how to learn a language (most Americans). For example, one woman student, in her thirties, leapt up from her seat at least three times during every class to answer voice calls, and texted constantly throughout. Having missed the instruction, she would ask the teacher to repeat the point, which he politely did. Another older man apparently had never studied a language before (perhaps had never studied anything before). He filled the class hour with random questions about basic grammar (what is a noun? what do you mean, noun?) history, and politics -- all of which the teacher politely answered, sometimes at length. Due to the teacher's lack of training in mixed-level classroom management, the pace of instruction was extremely slow and disorderly. In eight weeks I learned very little. I would not go back. Still, with so much variation among individual teachers and the possibility of a better mix of adult students, your mileage may vary. Bodhi tree is the only place in Portland to get formal instruction in Mongolian, for example -- and it's affordable. By all means give it a try, but I'd recommend to keep expectations low.

I was deeply disappointed, but I thought I would still share my experience. The only thing that really bothered me was how warm the room was. Maybe I just have a high tolerance for things, but I wasn't put off by anything. I was there to learn Cantonese Level 1. The instructor was very kind and friendly, and I hate that I forgot her name. If you're going in there expecting to be taught, then go somewhere else. This is a place to talk about the language, go through dialogue, and familiarize yourself with the way it sounds and how to speak it. But there weren't drills, memorizing or starting with the basics like tones. And that was fine for me because my memory is excellent and I can clearly remember how the instructor says it and I can repeat it. I'm thinking about doing one-on-one tutoring there, but the distance is a little out of my way. These are community classes and I had a good time.
