As a physician and a daughter, it is my honor and privilege to recommend Spirit Care Homes…read moreenthusiastically and without reservation. My father lived in a large assisted living facility for almost two years. As his neurologic disease progressed, that facility was unable to meet his care needs. We were incredibly lucky to find Spirit Care for the final several months of his life. The loving and sensitive staff made my father and our entire family feel at home and cared for. They went above and beyond to ensure that during his time at Spirit Care my father felt welcomed, safe, loved, and confident that his needs would always addressed. Unique to Spirit Care is the consistent and skilled caregiving team. At Spirit Care, the staff are respected and appreciated, which attracts and retains highly qualified, long term caregivers (we had experienced frequent turnover of staff at the larger facility). The owners and staff at Spirit Care constantly checked in with my father, our family, and his hospice team to ensure that he was getting the best care possible, always promoting his autonomy and quality of life. The state of the art monitoring technologies utilized at Spirit Care ensure the residents' safety and optimal health. Spirit Care worked with us to creatively adapt my father's care plan as his condition changed and they always advocated for us. Spirit Care's excellent program allowed me to let go of the role of care manager (because absolutely nothing fell through the cracks) so that I could just be a daughter again. In his final days, Ilitch, Ria, Tammy, and the entire staff enveloped us with love and support so we could focus on my father's comfort. In fact, they continued caring for our family even after my father had passed away with incredibly generous actions that allowed us to focus on grieving. I absolutely recommend Spirit Care Homes to any family looking for a caregiving home for their loved one. I will be forever grateful to Spirit Care for the role they played in the final months of my father's life. This is a top notch facility that I fully and wholeheartedly recommend and endorse both as a physician and a family member.

My loved one walked into Gianna's on his own 2 feet (an important distinction), with the idea that…read morehe was going to get more focused attention and individual care because of a smaller ratio of residence to staff. Our family was told there would be active interaction with the residence, music therapy and other therapeutic methods that would be used to achieve the proposed individualized/focused care. The actual result is that NOTHING could be FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH! The REALITY is that immediately after moving in, while our loved one was getting adjusted to a new place, people and surroundings in the first few days, the immediate course of action from the Gianna's staff was to medicate him to the point of extreme sedation, so that he did not disturb the staff! This sedation was to the point of him being asleep in the chair all day every day and not moving, not eating and inability to be mobile when he had just walked into the place days earlier. At the direction of the Gianna's nurse, the staff issued PRN meds (as needed med's) automatically when they were not needed. He was in the chair asleep in the chair, and they continued to issue sedating medications. This was so severe, that one time I walked at dinner time and our loved one was laying on the floor with the staff walking around him, like nothing was wrong. Not helping him up or attempting to help him. The staff did not exhibit any compassion or attempt to find alternative solutions. This continued. Simultaneously NONE of the therapeutic methods promised happening. I am not saying this lightly as someone who was hearing this from afar. I witness this firsthand as I was there 22 of 28 days he was in Gianna's. This persisted and he did not come out of nor was able to recover from the extreme sedated state the Gianna's nurse and team put him. He paid the ultimate price died 28 days after entering Gianna's. Save your loved one! DO NOT believe what they tell you! DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN GIANNA'S. They too may pay the ultimate price like my loved one did! PS: As someone who was there nearly daily, I observed that of the following: Of the 14 residents at Gianna's ONLY 1 person was mobile on her feet and verbal. ALL others were confined to a wheelchair, nonverbal and appear to be sedated with no movement, verbal or physical interaction with staff. This was observed throughout many different shifts. Would give less than zero stars if I could! Signed: Extremely Heartbroken loved one

My dad lived at Gianna for only 28 days: from the first day when he walked in on his own 2 feet…read more(able to ambulate, eat, and interact) to the day he passed away. We moved to Gianna because we were promised low staff to resident ratio, more individualized care, a "medication last" approach, experienced staff and a warm environment that treated residents like family. While the ratio was as promised, I felt the care, staff competency and medication approaches were not. Often, I found my dad sitting alone, in the corner, unable to move or open his eyes from sedation. With drool down his cheek and leftover food on his face. He would often have globs of liquid medicine in his mouth from staff trying to give medication while he is unresponsive to verbal commands and touch. I would often find him in this state with no interaction from staff leaving me to advocate for his needs. We felt like outsiders and an inconvenience. This was not the care I was promised. We had multiple instances of their staff not following hospice medication orders. We witnessed staff administer anxiety medication labeled for as-needed use when my dad was already so sedated that he was unresponsive. I was able to intervene while present, but who knows how much extra, unneeded medication was given when I wasn't. It was also administered incorrectly. Instead of administering sublingually (as stated on the medical order), they were dissolving the meds and shooting them down his throat with a syringe. This is incorrect and can be very dangerous especially if the person cannot swallow as medication can be forced into the lungs. I believe this was occurring as my dad would often cough after being given medicine this way. There was an instance where the doctor ordered a stop to a medication, yet staff continued to administer it for four days! For four days my dad was given discontinued medication IN ADDITION to the medication that replaced it. The head RN at Gianna locked the medication in a cabinet in her office to prevent staff from continuing to administer it. Apparently, she was not confident enough in her staff to be able to verbally tell them not to give this medication. When my dad was bedridden at end-of-life stages and NEEDED this medication, it couldn't be accessed. This caused a 2.5-hour delay while we waited for the medication to arrive. If that wasn't bad enough, once the medicine arrived, staff administered the medicine incorrectly. My dad began vomiting and choking after a few doses. We immediately alerted staff. There was no urgency by them to help which is VERY alarming in this type of situation. I would hate to see what would have happened if he was alone during this episode. After alerting the hospice nurse of what occurred, she had to call Gianna's staff to educate them on how to give medication sublingually as written in the medication orders. After the medication was given correctly, relief was seen almost immediately. I believe that none of the prior doses were effective due to incorrect administration. All this to say there was so much prolonged and unnecessary suffering that took place because of mistakes that should never have happened at a facility of this caliber. Sublingual medication at end-of-life stages is extremely common. It was shocking to me that their "experienced" staff were not familiar with how to give medication this way. These events support my experience of lack of competence and compassion within the staff and lack of proper RN oversight/direction. Medication mistakes are unacceptable and can be life threatening. This was far from the end-of-life experience I wanted for my dad and family. It certainly was not the experience I expected given what was advertised to me and the price that came along with it. While I should have been focused on enjoying what little time I had left with my dad, I felt forced to monitor staff to ensure they were performing care properly, giving the right medications, and administering medications correctly. I feel robbed of this time. The only silver lining is that my dad and family didn't have to suffer through the poor care and experience of this facility for long. Although our stay was brief, the damage caused by this facility was large. If you care for your loved one and the end-of-life experience you have with them, I recommend you steer clear of this facility.

When our Dad made the difficult decision to sell his condo and move to a Senior Living location, we visited multiple Senior Living homes but kept returning to The Glenn Hopkins. Scott and the wonderful Marketing Team were very patient, allowing us to visit multiple times as they understood this was a major decision for our Dad and family. Dad chose The Glenn because it felt like home and we knew he would be cared for very well. Dad spent the first five months in The Towers. He was so happy with his one bedroom w/den and couldn't get over the fact that he was being served meals in a dining room with white linen tablecloths. It felt like he was dining out every day. In June, Dad had to move to The Terraces Assisted Living where he lived for the next 10 months. Sandra, Julie, and Jen were so fantastic and accommodating as he required many schedule changes based on his changing health. Dad formed many friendships with the other residents during his time at The Glenn. They looked out for each other and we are thankful for his wonderful neighbors. He also made many friendships with the staff who cared for him. It takes very special people to do all that the nurses and aides do every day and to do it with love and patience. Dad made the choice that if something happened he did not want to go to the hospital. Instead, after suffering a stroke, he spent his final days in his home being cared for by the people who knew him and cared about him. Our family is OVERWHELMED by the love and support that was shown to our Dad and us during his final days, and the days that followed as we planned his service and moved his belongings out of his apartment. It was a steady stream of staff and neighbors who came to show their love for him and say goodbye. The staff also provided so much comfort and support to our family each day. They shared stories of their family members, gave us lots of hugs, and told us "we cared for your Dad how we would want our Dad to be treated". It was very touching when some of the staff took their personal time and came to the funeral service. The Glenn was an extension of our family and we knew Dad was loved and received exceptional care every day. Dad frequently said "God brought me to The Glenn". We are thankful this is where he lived and thankful to everyone who touched his and our family's lives. We would highly recommend The Glenn Hopkins to anyone looking for a Senior, Assisted Living or Memory Care home. Family of Al Carlson

I heartily agree that The Glenn Hopkins is a wonderful place to live. My reasons may be a bit…read moredifferent from most others, however. Two years ago I decided I wanted to live closer to my children and to downtown Minneapolis, so I sold my town home in Elk River. I no longer wanted to own real estate, thought about finding an apartment, but I'm 84 and knew I'd need services at some point even though I don't now. I have 8 children and the thought of their trying to decide "what to do with Mother" made me feel I should be the one to decide. I shopped around a lot and found the Glenn by far the most appealing senior residence. I still don't NEED any of their services, but I use the shuttle a lot, have learned to navigate the Metro buses and can get around so easily that I sold my car six months ago. What pleases me most is 1) the opportunity to volunteer here as much or little as I wish, 2) the ability to be as social (or not) as I like and to my great surprise 3) the wooded surroundings and splendidly maintain grounds. I like to walk and never tire of this area. And don't get me started on the city of Hopkins! It puts Elk River to shame, with many good restaurants, a movie theater, an art center with concerts and events for all ages, a grocery store, hardware store, drug store that delivers, specialty shops and a half dozen antique shops as well as a branch of the Hennepin Library system. (We have a fine library in our own building, too, with quarterly deliveries of books from the Hennepin system as well as hundreds of books that have been donated to us.) I am Catholic and was delighted to find a "church home" here. Last of all (perhaps it should be first) the entire staff is not only competent but very, very kind. Every one I've met will go many extra miles to be helpful.
