I wish I could give Dr. Hickory more than 5 stars. I truly believe he is the greatest orthodontist in America. I first signed up for Invisalign through a Living Social deal elsewhere. Sure, that service was 1/2 the cost of Dr. Hickory..... but that service was run by a non-orthodontist dental assistant! I quickly decided against the cheap route when I was informed that he wasn't sure if my crooked teeth were too extreme for Invisalign. (they weren't) Then I found Dr. Hickory, and all my worries were over. Dr. Hickory lives alone above his extravagantly decorated Dupont Circle office. Why is this a good thing? Because it means he offers Saturday appointments! I've never heard of a dentist or orthodontist offering such convenient appointment times. Just avoiding the mess of having to leave my office during the work-week for appointments was worth the additional price. But the value didn't end there. From the waiting room and from speaking with Dr. Hickory himself, new patients will quickly learn he was one of the first adopters of Invisalign treatments, and keeps up on all of its advances. Apparently, Invisalign's technology has evolved so much that it can do everything braces can, and more. Dr. Hickory knows how to make those advances work for you, with rapid but painless results. Not once did the treatment make me feel sore or require aspirin. This was my second time with orthodontist service. As a child, I remember having monthly appointment with an orthodontist, with a doctor changing metal wires on a monthly basis. With Invisalign, a 10 month treatment only required about 5 appointments total. Dr. Hickory always answered my questions promptly and reasonably. For example, another orthodontist in DC suggested that I get drastic bone-adjusting vanity surgery before Invisalign. However, Dr. Hickory agreed with my dentist, and thought such a step was too far. Thanks to Dr. Hickory, I didn't have to wear a post-surgery brace on my head and drink my meals for a month through a straw. Instead, he made adjustments on the computer with Invisalign to compensate for the slight bone misalignment. Problem solved. In addition, Dr. Hickory took time to personally inspect my progress and order a set of adjustment aligners at no additional price. I had the option to do another set (a re-re-adjustment?) if needed. Dr. Hickory's staff is professional, polite, helpful, and cheerful. They were helpful with setting up a payment plan and are always flexible with appointment scheduling. They posted pictures of their wild Halloween party on their Facebook wall, and you could tell they treat each other like family. My treatment ended yesterday, and on my way out the door they offered me a bottle of champagne to take home. Quite ridiculous, but fitting for a quirky Dupont Circle office. it was very thoughtful. Now, my teeth are straight and I am no longer self conscious about my smile. With permanent retainers installed behind 12 teeth (6 top, 6 bottom), along with a plastic retainer to wear at night, my straight teeth aren't going anywhere. If you are interested in Invisalign, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Hickory at Embassy Row Orthodontics. He is nothing short of brilliant! When I came in, my smile was fine. I just thought it needed a little tweaking. 2 years later (entirely my fault that it's been so long--I'm one of those "wear my aligners at night" people just because I tend to graze during the day) I looked at a pic of me from 2015 and my smile is SO much nicer and more even than it was. He pays such close attention to detail that you don't realize just how much better your smile can look--until it does! And his staff is fantastic. I love them all but I am always happy when I meet with Carlos! He is personable, professional and incredibly well-versed in all of the workings of Invisalign. Every I see him, I leave feeling like I learned something new. You can tell he loves what he does and he passes that excitement onto the patient. Invisalign is pretty incredible in and of itself, but Dr. Hickory and his team are truly amazing at what they do. Every appointment is quick but thorough (they don't overbook so you're seen when you're scheduled) and the office is simply gorgeous! I'm half way through my Invisalign treatment and working with the staff and Dr. Hickory has been great. My dentist also does Invisalign and although her quote was less than Dr. Hickory's, I went with him because I just felt so welcome. And you really get what you pay for! Walking through the blue doors of Dr. Hickory's office is like entering an alternate universe where the perfect doctor's visit exist. The staff is friendly and responsive, wait time is nonexistent, all of your questions are answered, concerns addressed, and I can go on and on. Before I chose Dr Hickory, I have done my homework and had visited about 6 + Orthodontist dentists in the DC area. I have found Providers that were cheaper than him and maybe could have provided similar service. But the one thing that made me chose him was he has an AMAZING staff working from him. Dr. Hickory has great staff, almost all of them has worked from him from 5 five to 30 years. The main problem I notice with small business owners is that they focus only on customer satisfaction and forget their staffs happiness. They consider employees just as an expense. But without happy employee there wont be happy customer. I think Dr. Hickory treats his staff so well and I think because of this his employee do great job in doing their work professionally. The moment I walked to his office for initial consultation, it was not hard to realize his employees are happy to work for him. Everyone was very professional and they never pressured me to sign for their service on the spot. They give me a breakdown of the cost of the Invisalign and told me to think about and get back to them whenever I'm ready to start the process. They have also the best technology for Invisalign. Hum I wish I could write a better review. The first time I have been at Dr. Hickry's I have been waiting for over 50 minutes and once he came in he spent maximum 5 minutes with me. During this time he tried to sell me the invasilign retainers and it is just at the ned that I got the quote for a normal retainer. I am only going to get a normal retainer (the cost for the invasilign is about $5000). So I ma going to go back and get there my retainer and I really hope that this time I won't be waiting 50 minutes. Other than that I have been happy with it. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Hickory and his staff at Embassy Row Orthodontics! They're all very friendly, laid back, and know exactly what they're doing. After my first consultation I opted for SmileStyler aligners (instead of Invisalign) to adjust some slight crowding around my lower front teeth, and I'm glad I did. The aligners fit perfectly, were less prone to clouding, and were also considerably less expensive. The entire process from start to finish may have taken a bit longer than anticipated, but Dr. Hickory was aiming for perfection and I greatly appreciated that. It's such a relief knowing that my teeth are now where they should be! The payment plan we agreed upon was adhered to and the automatic, interest-free monthly payments made the financial side of things a worry-free experience. The office itself is also inviting and tidy, and its location was convenient for me since I was able to walk there for each of my appointments on days that I teleworked. Bonus: They gave me a celebratory gift after my last appointment -- a true surprise! :-) If you've had traditional braces before, but need a touch-up after years of not wearing your original retainer, don't hesitate to call Embassy Row Orthodontics to find out what your options are. Dr. Hickory is a superstar! He is very nice takes time to see and explain everything to you and has great ideas to solve big orthodontic problems. I had an overbite and crowded teeth problem I tried in another country orthodontic treatments that don't involve braces but nothing really worked. Now I am at the very end of my Invisalign treatment I have worn them for 1 year and 3 months. I could not be happier from the result. I definitely recommend Dr. Hickory! Been a patient for a few years and while I think Dr. Hickory may be good the staff at this clinic is really bad. Dr. Hickory works behind the scenes so most interactions are not with him and the staff is really unprofessional both the support and administrative staff. For the price I paid over 6k for a somewhat simple case I definitely expected better service from the office. From cancellations of appointments made months ahead to rude front desk staff - I was extremely surprised by the treatment I got. The ambiance in the waiting area was to die for! First things first: While Invisalign is not cheap, it was worth it and I'm glad I went with an orthodontist rather than a dentist. Y'know, you only get one set of teeth (you know what I mean), so you should invest in them. And my teeth are way straighter now so that's pretty cool. Also, just as a general Invisalign thing do your research and know you'll have attachments and etc. But honestly almost no one noticed even when I would point it out. Another Yelper called Dr. Hickory's staff "beautiful, attentive, [and] darling" which is SO TRUE. Shideh (Dr. Hickory's administrative coordinator) is the most lovely, wonderful, warm, kindhearted human and Dr. Hickory should give her an enormous raise bc she 100% helped tip the scales towards Embassy Row when I was choosing where to get Invisalign. Jacqualine (who actually gets in your mouth for stuff, not sure of her actual title) is hilarious and personable but most importantly good at her job. She went to bat for me and always made sure I was happy. Caveat: like with any medical provider/procedure, you need to be in charge of your own treatment. Do your research and ask lots of questions. Especially when you meet with Dr. Hickory, be sure to be extra clear about what you want and don't be shy about checking to make sure it's understood. Amazing place--wonderful staff, quick & professional service, beautiful location. I went in to get a new retainer and was in and out in 20 minutes. The receptionist and the dental assistant were ridiculously nice, funny, honest, and charming. When I came back to pick up the retainer just 2 days later, they let me bring my dog in! This office may be good for people looking only for minor realignment of their teeth. Unfortunately, if you have something more long term (opening up the bite or making space for a belated canine) their first line of treatment is whatever takes the least of their time and most of your money. I was offered an unnecessary extraction as a means of making additional space, while they also tried to sell me the more expensive Invisalign treatment, even though that method is not suited for dealing with malocclusion and is only for more minor cosmetic corrections. Looking at another review below, I've come to think that aggressively pushing Invisalign is just something he does with everyone, which is a poor practice. Fortunately, I am an informed patient and I got them to give me the treatment with traditional braces. In the course of the treatment, getting appointments was difficult and even when there was an opening, a wait of at least 30 minutes was guaranteed. They were clearly overbooked but I guess that is how they pay for the fancy decor and gadgets in the office. The results? They took care of most issues but only partially. The alignment is not entirely symmetrical from left to right, and several teeth stand higher/lower than others. The bite can feel quite uncomfortable, especially in the morning. Their clean-up work was similarly shabby and hurried, so I had to go get the debris removed at a regular dental office, where the staff also noted the insufficient clean-up. Before all this was taken care of, it seems that I also developed several cavities. Conclusion: If you have relatively minor realignment issues, you have plenty of money/time and like to sit in a comfortable office with a bunch of exotic artwork, be my guest. read more

Even though I know they are busy, this consultation felt very well paced and I didn't feel rushed out like other offices. I was recommended to Dr. Hickory's office by a co-worker. I had a consulting appointment with both Dr. Hickory and a young woman on his staff. They were both polite. However, I have chosen to work with another orthodontist. After completing five other consultations with other orthodontists in the DC area (two being only a few blocks from Dr. Hickory's office), his prices were extremely high compared to his competition. While I can appreciate that Dr. Hickory can charge higher prices do to his location in DC, I'm still puzzled as to why my quotes at the other five orthodontists were all around the same ballpark, while Dr. Hickory's quote was about $1350 more on average (in one case, it was $1600 more). It surely was not for lack of experience, as the other orthodontists' experience were very similar to his. I firmly believe in paying for quality, but not when I can get the same quality for a lot less. Furthermore, I was kept waiting several times during my appointment which I felt was unprofessional of an office with such an esteemed reputation. It made me think, "If I'm kept waiting now, will this be a regular occurrence in the future if I were to choose to work with this office?" The five other offices I visited took much more time to explain treatment options, and did not just focusing on Invisalign as Dr. Hickory did. Furthermore, I was not kept waiting at all. I think businesses often forget that consultations are like job interviews; if they don't deliver during the consultation, why should the customer choose them over other providers? Overall, while I found Dr. Hickory and his staff polite and friendly, this alone cannot account for the cons related to working with his office. read more

Dr. Hickory and his team are absolutely fabulous and I highly recommend them to anyone who is considering getting braces in the D.C. area. I had a very complicated open bite that required a combination of surgery and orthodontics and I am so glad I chose Dr. Hickory. A year after I got my braces and a few months after I had jaw surgery for my open bite I was finishing my undergraduate degree and got an amazing opportunity to volunteer in West Africa. The only problem was there was no orthodontist in the country where I got this opportunity. I decided to go and to take off my braces for what I thought would be a year but ended up being five. When I finally found an orthodontist in another country I moved to a few years later, the orthodontist said that my case was so complicated and he suggested that I return to the person who I started with - that of course was Dr. Hickory. I am so glad I did. Dr. Hickory explained every stage of the process to me and I greatly appreciated his warm and gentle nature. The staff in Dr. Hickory's office in Dupont circle (the office I went to) are also extremely professional, responsive and attentive to clients. The environment of the office is an added bonus to the excellent service Dr. Hickory and his staff provide. There is beautiful art on the walls from South East Asia, iPads in addition to the magazines in the waiting room and general good vibes all around. I often joke with Dr. Hickory that I am his longest patient (because of the five year gap I had). I am going into the office today for my last visit and even though I am so happy my braces are finally off, I will genuinely miss the warmth and kindness of Dr. Hickory and his staff! read more

Overall the treatment was fine and the staff were sometimes wonderful but sometime just OK and I did feel part of a production line with very infrequent consultations with the dentist. The treatment is much more expensive than you need to pay - it seems to be a DC thing and there are much better services with top quality people in Virginia or Maryland. Overall the treatment worked - but took twice as long as predicted despite being a very diligent user. I had new crowns put in by a great dentist in Virginia as a final part of the treatment - the results were great and literally 40% of the price for dentists recommended in DC - and the staff there have been lovely each time. If I had my time again I would have had the Invisalign with the non-DC dentist as well. read more
