I never throw away blown out tennis shoes because I use them when I work in the yard and walk for short distances. Just like food or other items that expire fitness shoes have a life. Depending how frequent you use your use, you could average 6 months to over a year. When I was training for marathons, I literally bought a pair of running shoes every 6 months because of the long distance running. I always know when I am ready for a new pair of fitness shoes. The red flag sign that scream shoe replacement is needed primarily is pain. I have a high arch and when the arch falls in fitness shoes, my feet hurt. Another sign for fitness shoe replacement include worn-out shoe soles, and a noticeable decrease in traction while you are moving in class. When your feet are cushioned, your feet are happy. They maybe singing Pharrell's song, Happy. Smile. To my surprise Academy was open until 10 pm. The customer service desk managed by Rick was super helpful. He allowed me take my shoes that I ordered online back to their shoe section to see if I could find a match in black. Unfortunately, black was sold out. However, I decided to keep my fitness shoes because they were comfortable on my feet, on sale ("Hot Deal") and I did not pay tax on the shoes. Happy feet...Happy Delores!

The typical sports equipment is well-supported too: there's a great basketball and baseball section. That said, archery and boxing is here too! Solid clothing brands can be found, including Carhart, LL Bean, and Columbia. They also sell guns and carry a solid supply of ammunition. Yeti and Igloo products dominate. My only complaint is the lack of service I received. I was looking for a treadmill. I investigated each one as well as I could from the little information provided, but no one noticed me there. I got to the store and the greeter was pleasant but I figured I didn't need to bother him. I could find the kit myself. I was wrong. This academy didn't look very big and I quickly made a round of the store without seeing anything for pools/hot tubs. So I went back to the greeter and inquired about the kit. He found me someone who was very friendly and helpful. He went above and beyond looking up then going through the store room to find the kit for me. I'm incredibly grateful because I wanted to get the hot tub ready for a sister day I'm going to have tomorrow. They really allowed me to elevate our get together.

We live in the city and often times, especially when things are on sale, stock can be limited at the locations nearest us in South Austin. This location always ends up being a short and quick drive south to get what we need. Plenty of space for parking and never have an issue navigating in and out of this area. The parking lot is spacious and plenty of space to not make you feel like you are parking really far from the entrance. The store is always super clean and help is just an ask away and not far as the employees here take great care in providing service and helping you out on finding the thing you came here for. Academy is all about value and savings so I appreciate the willingness to price match on things I have seen other stores, in the area, provide so I know I can come here and get exactly what I need at a fair price.

He got quite an assortment so he's prepared to fish in our local lakes, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico down in South Padre. This location was nice and bright and clean. After finding a bike I was interested in, I was thrilled to find a button on the shelf to press for help, alas, it was broken and didn't work. I waited a good 10 minutes on line to check out. There were 2 cashiers for about 15 people (most were behind me by the time I got to one. He told me he'd have someone meet me back there. I got back there, no one! Two women were folding clothing and ignored me. Finally someone got this great guy Bryan to help me. We got my bike (which was on sale) and he cut the long line at the cashiers and checked me out. He offered to help me put it in the car too. Very helpful. The store is severely understaffed. If you can find what you want and get it up front, you're OK. But it's very difficult to get help. Review from 2018: Academy doesn't have a very good selection of tennis gear, but I guess that's based on demand. They do have great deals on decent clothing, often reduced to excellent prices. Recently I bought decent baseball caps and t-shirts for $4.99 each! Needed a couple of bikes for young grandchildren. They had a sale. A friend of mine got an exercise machine for under $200 dollars, which I thought was pretty good. They even moved it out to the truck (in the pouring rain no less.) One of the big things they have going for them is their firearm prices. For a retail store they have a decent selection with prices to match. Ammunition is also priced well. They don't have much for high end survival/camping/hunting gear but it is a retail department store, so for what it is, you have to love it. Well stocked and plenty of staff to assist, I would come here over Cabela's 11 times out of 10!
