Elma is a small city. To me, it's a town with a population of over 500. However, it's considered a city to Iowa. The main street is Busti Avenue.
I drop by Elma as often as I can to say hi to my late friend at the cemetery. I also check out the visitor centre. All are on the same street.
Elma Memorial Hall has always intrigued me. I drive by it often. Last Sunday, I decided to take a closer look at it externally and do a bit of research.
The hall is where all major community events happen. From Fish Fry Fridays (say that five times fast!), to taking a photo with Santa before Christmas, all these events are held at this hall.
This hall is handicap-accessible. There are designated parking spots to the left of the building when you are looking at the main doors.
It has a full kitchen, sound system, small stage, and tables and chairs to accommodate roughly 375 people, maximum. If you are looking to hold a wedding or graduation banquet, this hall is your place, where almost the entire community can fit in here!
This hall was completely remodelled in 2013. Improvements were made with the heating and cooling systems. A ramp was built for accessibility, along with making the restrooms larger.
There is a strict policy with alcoholic beverages. You can't bring your own booze. However, if you do need alcohol for whatever you are throwing at this hall, you can contact the American Legion group that is onsite and negotiate bar services. Obviously, it's best to get your bar services reserved at the same time that you book the hall.
The rental hall fee is reasonable. It's $250, with $100 returned after the event is over and the place is inspected for cleanliness. If your group was rowdy that day and decided to trash the place, you forfeit your deposit.
The hall is fairly nondescript when you look at it. Nothing on this street is truly flashy, so it does blend in with everything.
I'm glad that I learned more about this hall. I don't foresee myself booking anything at this hall. However, if you need a cheap place for a fun gathering with family and friends in the area, it sounds like a decent venue.
