Dr. Larry has never produced any such stories for my best friend (who also sees him) and me. He's in his mid 40s, but comes off as young and hip (though not in the "trying too hard" sort of way.) Oh, and he's unbelievably attentive. If he knows you're going through a crisis, he'll actually call you sometimes. The NMT, my beloved son, has suffered from anxiety, depression, and ADHD for some time now. Over…read morethe years we have benefited from the skills of talented clinicians, each of whom I've been forever grateful for. Dr. Hernz is a gentle man who embodies peace and kindness. He is funny, but more than anything he conveys to his patients his fervent desire for them to feel better, and that he is on the same team as them. It's amazing what a transformative effect that has on a teenager. For example, on a recent visit, the NMT was being, well, a teen. Sullen, silent, maddeningly obstinate. He went into session staring at the ceiling and ignoring everything Dr. Hernz said, every attempt to start a conversation was met with a glare then a look away. Fun stuff. After about 10 minutes (really, I timed it) Dr. Hernz calmly turns to me and says "So, what have you noticed?" I began to share my observations, the NMT got up, walked out. OK. Then, five minutes later, he walks back in and...starts talking. Engages. Wow. Then Dr. Hernz tells him again, he's there to help him, he really wants him to feel better. My son, he looks at his doctor and says "I'm really sorry for walking out. I needed a moment but that was rude." Shut the front door. Dr. Hernz took it in stride, and they continued working. Other good things: Appointments are always on time, or within 5 minutes of scheduled time. Receipts are sent promptly within a day of the session. 95% of the time prescriptions are sent electronically, and this is done promptly. The imperfect: I don't always get a same-day response to email, it's usually a day or two. Occasionally prescriptions are not sent over promptly, as in sent within a day or two. Messages left for him are returned, sometimes same day, sometimes within a day or two. It's a graceful pace of administration. Also, no surprises, he does not participate with any insurance carrier. This is not surprising, it's rare to find a psychiatrist who does, they are a nationally underserved medical specialty, and especially in child psychiatry, there are far too few of them available, period. The good part of that is that his fees are reasonable, so the amount over what our insurance plan covers is fairly small. If you can't guess by the time you got here, YES I would recommend him. He's wonderful.

CASA was a fun organization to be a part of mainly due to Dr. F's enthusiasm, passion and new ideas on making students aware of substance abuse. I was a peer educator and Dr. F trained us to do workshops, intervention and reach out to students at TU on the issues of drug and alcohol use. He was one of the most accessible and easy going professors that I knew. I often found myself talking to Dr. F about things I was going through because he was so easy to talk to. Respectively, I could tell he wasn't a stranger to the crazy college lifestyle (partying, relationship woes, family struggles, work balance, etc) I was living and he never made me feel "less than" or like he didn't get it. Dr. F always just got it. I think Dr. F would be a great therapist for anyone wanting to explore the role addiction serves in his or her world. If she…read morehad provided excellent career counseling and I walked away prepared to find a job, those rates would be extraordinarily reasonable for guidance from a PhD Psychologist who specializes in career counseling and has 15-20 years of experience. However... The first appointment (75mins/$270) was an extended intake. I got absolutely nothing out of it. When I asked what her strategy was to help me find employment, she said, basically, it depends and that there are a lot of things she can help with. (Yeah, I never felt like I got a straight answer to that question.) Session 2 (50mins/$180): She retrod the same ground that had been covered in the intake session and we made no progress. I repeated my question about strategy and didn't get a good answer this time, either. Session 3 (50mins/$180): I brought her an old aptitude test/interest inventory I'd taken about a year previously, hoping she could provide some professional expertise as to what it recommended in more depth than I could understand myself. She didn't point out anything that wasn't obvious from first glance, then proceeded to read a several-page-long list of recommended jobs at me. (I had already read the list myself multiple times and found it unenlightening, which is why I was asking for her opinion.) Session 4 (50mins/$180): By sheer accident, the week before this appointment I found an interesting job opening on the other side of the country and shot the founder an email. He was impressed enough to schedule an interview with me before I even sent in a resume. The counselor didn't have much advice to help me with that, though we managed (finally) to clarify the types of businesses and industries I'd like to work with. Session 5 (50mins/$180): She'd done her homework and had Googled lists of cool businesses in cities I might be interested in. After spending at least 15 minutes tethering her laptop to her cell phone (because, as she told me, business internet is too expensive), and another five or ten minutes pulling up the email she sent herself about the companies she'd found, she then sat on the couch next to me and showed me business listings and company websites for the rest of the session--as if I was too stupid to use the internet on my own. (She has, for some reason, a massive aversion to communicating with clients by email. If she'd have just mailed me this list upfront, we could have avoided this entire meeting.) All that said, she seems like a nice lady, and if you need really basic career counseling services, I'm sure she could help you. But for $990 and zero results, I'm very skeptical of sending anyone else her way.
