If you like management that has no clue what they're doing, maintenance that is non-existent, and renovation happening all day long, then welcome to paradise. This is easily the worst apartment complex I have experienced. It's not that the building itself is bad. It's a good location, it has some good views, and while it has some age, it would be fine if kept up. However, the new management has absolutely no clue what they're doing. If you rent here, don't expect to get proper notice on anything. Also, don't expect your rent payments to be handled properly. There's either some really creative bookkeeping going on, or these people just can't add 2 + 2. I have never seen such poor maintenance. Even the simplest things don't get taken care of - an exit sign was hanging by only wires for months before someone finally took the 5 minutes to fix it. And now, they have decided to do a remodel, which has resulted in covering all the apartment windows and noisy construction all day long. But, don't expect management to care about your inconvenience. However, if they need in your apartment, you can be assured that they will do it without proper notice. Enjoy! read more

Honestly, I love my apartment. I looked at a bunch in this area, and these were the nicest. However, literally the weekend I signed my lease, they changed management, and they are absolutely awful. The revolving door of front desk workers are rude, lazy and dumb. ("Can you please show me where the business center is?" "I don't know." "You work here..." "Yeah, I don't know.") They've given away our parking spots four times in three months to someone else. Really, how hard is it to document who's parking where? Our balcony door has been broken since we moved in, and it's still not fixed, four months later. There are numerous other issues, but you get the idea. read more

When this building was owned by Cornerstone, my husband and I were SOO happy. But Once Berkshire took over the apartments building about 7 months ago, everything went downhill. There are constantly holes in walls, leaks, mold (or at least the SMELL of it throughout the building!), broken items, missing packages, unfriendly staff, among a list of Other things. My hallway hasn't been vacuumed for about a month, and the trash chute barely opens because of a disgusting sticky substance on it. The staff has repeatedly entered my apartment to do "inspections" for the water heater, safety, fire alarm, etc...and its become annoying that they keep on entering. Its my home, not just a random room you can come in and out of! Did I mention LOST packages!????? This month is about the 4th time they've lost a package...and they just stare at me and say "well its not here"...? my husband and I just got married and we're getting sent gifts and now we're missing one, we dont know what it was, what it was worth or who it was from so we can thank someone. Its just ridiculous. They don't even TRY to figure something out. Its like they have something WAY better to do...in front of their computers. I can go ON and ON about this company but i think you know where I stand on this place. Don't come here. Its not worth it. Run, don't walk, far away from Elliott Bay Plaza. Like other residents, I loved living here when Riverstone managed it, but the new management is horrible. Here is just a sampling of what has happened since they've taken over: 1. The fire alarms have repeatedly malfunctioned. On the last occasion, the fire alarm went off intermittently for a full hour- despite there not being the presence of a fire. 2. Security is seemingly non-existent. When the fire alarms malfunctioned, I called the emergency number after about 20 minutes. The man who answered told me that he had just found about the fire alarms when residents called him, and he was sending over someone who would be there in 10-15 minutes. 3. The elevators often break. The last time, it was broken for seven full days. 4. Staff members are rarely helpful. When I asked a staff member when the elevator would be repaired, she shrugged and said "I don't know, I've been off the last few days." 5. When I went in to sign my lease, the rent amount shown on the lease was higher than the rent amount on my offer letter. When I pointed this out to the person in the office, they walked around the office confused for a few minutes talking to other people, and then admitted I was right. 6. Emails to the office rarely receive a response. 7. The fitness center is not cleaned regularly. 8. The printer in the business center rarely works. 9. The office hours are extremely inconvenient. Residents who work standard, 9-6 jobs have no way to receive their packages, and are stuck waiting until the weekend; the office does offer to place the packages outside the door, which could clearly result in theft. When I once suggested that the office hours be shifted or expanded to accommodate working residents, the man I spoke to literally laughed in my face. I can't urge you away from this place enough. There are nicer, cheaper, better managed apartment buildings in the neighborhood. read more

It's been about a month since I moved in and I love it! Juli (the EBP rep) asked us a few questions on what we're looking for and selected the perfect unit for us. We wanted to stay under $1800 (including 2 parking spaces) for a 2BR, 2BA, over 1,000 sq ft, and quiet because I work from home. She was able to meet all the requirements and showed us a fabulous unit on the 2nd floor, facing the courtyard (so it's quieter), and with a fireplace. Yay! PROS: 24 hour gym, rooftop deck, free tanning bed (not that I use it), fast response from maintenance, secured parking, 1 block from waterfront, 5 blocks from Pike Place and Space Needle, right off the 99 so it's convenient to get out of the city. CONS: Transients in the area. Also, our bikes got stolen the 1st week we were here. (Hence the -1 star) TIP: If you're looking for a new place and you're not from Seattle, use www.apartmentratings.com to narrow down your search. I'll give this apartment complex one star for the fact it's easy to get to downtown from Elliott and Western. I got an apartment at Elliott Bay Plaza (EBP) shortly after deciding to move to Seattle for a new job; the price seemed reasonable compared to SF but after a year in Seattle I realize it was overpriced. My apartment was a one bedroom on the second floor; it was basically a dungeon since it faced north on to a court yard and got almost no light. The noise level from the courtyard was unacceptable, one night I was woken up by screams from a tenant that had locked himself out of his apartment. The police had to be called and that ended with shouts of "hey douchebag, shut the f**k up" from various balconies. The staff tried to be helpful and I appreciated that but all in all the quality of the apartment building is lacking. If you're looking for a good Seattle experience and want to be close to bars; check out Lower Queen Anne or Capital Hill read more

I love living here. If you move in at a good time of year, then you can get good rental rates for a great location. It's walking distance to EVERYTHING! Downtown, the market, lower Queen Anne, the Space Needle! Plus, it's a really nice building. Both units I have lived in have new appliances, and great size and space. There is also a gym in both buildings, free tanning in each building, a really nice lounge area with a TV and nice furniture, fireplace, free wifi, etc. There is an outdoor pool and hot tub that face the sun in the summer. BBQ by the pool and one on the rooftop deck that guests can use. The staff is really friendly and awesome. My only complaints would stem from experiences that happen around the neighborhood, but that's not the fault of EBP. read more

I really enjoyed my stay at Elliott Bay, especially with Juli the lovely assistant manager. The staff was always super nice and I stopped in to talk to them all the time. The area has a lot of homeless/transients, but so does every other area in downtown/Belltown. I lived on Capitol Hill before EBP and it was no better in that regard. All in all, just like any other apartment place, depending on your view, floor, layout etc it can be awesome or terrible. But, if you end up in a dungeon that has no view, that is your own fault for not paying a little extra for a higher floor and better view. read more

I have lived in this building since 2005. And I loved it when it was previously managed by Riverstone. I even lived off and on in this building from 1997 to 1999 and it was beautiful. Everything changed once Berk"shyster" took over. Every poor review that has been written is to an absolute T. They are awful. It literally could not get any worse and I'm the kind of person who would never, ever write a review on yelp. After debating back and fourth with mgmt for several months I just felt compelled. Do not ever move into this building as long as you know that it is being managed by Berkshire. Here's a small list of things I have come up with just off the top of my head: 1) Broken trash chutes 2) smelly and dirty lobby 3) unfriendly staff 4) broken elevators 5) missing packages 6) not answering office phones 7) dirty pool/hot tub/courtyard 8) dirty sidewalks 9) dirty parking garage 10) dirty hallways 11) filthy fitness room 12) poor on-site security 13) not returning phone calls and emails 14) threatening eviction notice on utilities I had already paid. Elliott Bay Plaza used to be a great place to live...however, once Berkshire took over things have progressively gone down-hill: * The rooftop grill was down for the first few months "due to inspection" * Sidewalks are frequently covered in trash and broken glass - some of this is expected since this place is close to bars, but the staff seems to only clean the sidewalks once every few days (which is way too seldom given the location of this building). They also do a terrible job, just the other day I saw that instead of picking up a broken mug they just swept it under a gap in a light post! * The lobby in my building (P2) often smells like garbage * The hallways are frequently dirty and are only vacuumed once every few weeks (and I know this because there was a large spill of kitty litter outside of our apartment that sat around for 3 weeks) * They set up a flat-screen TV in my building to display package information and it worked for a grand total of one day (out of 3 months) * Have screwed up my bills on more than one occasion * Long waits to do simple things like pick up packages - they often only have 1 person helping tenants while the other 2 do office work, even when there are several tenants waiting. ...and the kicker... * They just started a major 6-month construction project which involves scaffolding all over the buildings, obstructing everyone's views, blocking parts of the alley between the buildings where everyone takes their dogs, and requiring people to empty their balconies for a couple of months! And they only gave everyone 3 business days of notice that construction was happening! The construction started on a Wednesday and they left everyone notices the previous Friday afternoon!! They are also not giving any rent discounts, but were kind enough to mention that the construction "would not block the parking garages for your convenience". Are you f****** kidding me??? To top it off, the rents in this place are definitely not cheap - go somewhere else, there are many places far more deserving of your money! read more

Man oh man, I lived there for a month and I gotta say, the location creeps the hell out of me. If that wasn't bad enough, the noise level on the 2nd floor is atrocious. The building is pretty. Unfortunately, it is horribly mis-managed. STAY AWAY...Below is a list of problems we have encountered frequently during our short 6 month lease. 1. False eviction notice for rent we did pay 2. Canceling meetings 10 minutes before the meeting (after I re-arranged my schedule to make the meeting when it was initially scheduled the night before). 3. Poor communication with residents 4. Always waiting in line to get anything from packages to fixing a parking problem (average wait is 15-30 min) 5. Poor parking (i.e. two large SUVs that don't fit without hitting each other or the wall) 6. Trying to add an additional month onto your rent ($1,600) as your moving out. 7. Hallways daily smell like marijuana (strongly) 8. Doors always come loose, drawers don't open, lights hang down so your head hits them 9. They don't tell you when you have packages 10. Hottub is consistently down Bottom line: Your hard earned money is better spent almost anywhere else. Don't bother, the problems don't make it worth it. read more

Since being sold to new owners who stated in the Seattle Business Journal that they waned to increase rents by 33% over the next 4 years, the quality of onsite management has fallen significantly. Most recently I had an appoint with the property manager who stood me up and no one gave me a phone call to let me know I didn't need to leave work early so as to meet her schedule. But the biggest issue is that despite having construction workers on scaffolding outside my windows and on my patio for 7 months, being prevented from using my apartment's patio, and having a neting over the building limiting the view and sunlight in the apartment, property management expects tenants to continue to pay full rents. When I renewed my lease a few months before construction began, there was no disclosure of the major 7 month exterior renovation project. read more

- The building is noisy. I can't believe I can hear my neighbors alarm clocks through the walls. A lot of dog noise too. - A number of rooms has mildew/mold problems. I met tenants who had to keep dehumidifiers running to keep the mold down. - More than a half-dozen building wide maintenance visits this year alone. You cannot schedule these, they just give you a few days notice that they'll be stopping by on one of two days. - The building was recently sold, cutting back the the amount of staff available to help. They offer fewer services now. Some are small but they add up. For instance, the gate I used to leave to go to work everyday is now usually locked shut, so I have to walk an extra block uphill everyday. read more

This is for the apartment complex formerly known as Elliott Bay Plaza or "EBP" and now called The Berkshires on Elliott. This is a duplicate of the review I posted on a new Yelp page for "The Berkshires." I've been a renter for 25 years and this is without question the most disappointing experience I've ever had with a landlord. I wouldn't normally write such a long or scathing review of a business, but since this may be read by potential renters who will be signing a year or longer lease I think a detailed disclosure of my year living at this property is warranted. Here goes: The sales pitch last summer went great. My girlfriend and I were really excited about the location and the amenities (hot tub, pool, sauna, gyms, community center, rooftop, etc.). The leasing agents were friendly and helpful, and to this day I've never had an issue with any of them, they seem to be doing their best working for a horrific parent company headquartered back east. It must really suck coming to work everyday knowing you are making empty promises and signing someone up to live in a sub par environment. Shame. Not long after moving in announcements started circulating that a major renovation was scheduled to begin and that it would take the better part of a YEAR! We were never told this and we would NOT have rented the apartment if we had been. And when I say major renovation I mean stripping the building down to its bones, covering it in a mesh "cocoon" all winter, scaffolding everywhere, and the loss of access to amenity after amenity. The package and "lifestyle" we signed on for was unavailable and we found ourselves instead living on a construction site. Picture waking up to half a dozen construction workers staring through your 3rd floor windows at you as they banged and hacked and drilled away ALL DAY. And that went on for many months. Horrible, messy, and dirty. The air quality was/is severely compromised. We bought a $400 indoor air cleaning machine and have run it on high 24/7 for months now trying to combat the air that is always filled with something: mold, particulate, dust, chemicals, paint, etc. In addition to the undisclosed construction, the level of service in general has declined steeply. There are bodily fluids and broken bottles left uncleaned in the stairwells and hallways. There is apparently no cleaning being done in the common areas. The building and parking garages REEK of rotting trash. The brand new paint and flooring surfaces are very light in color which would be fine if they cleaned but instead it all just looks disgusting. I've had to repeatedly ask the management to remove trash and debris from the common area just outside my apartments front door. Our screens were torn by the construction workers when they ripped out our windows and haven't been replaced. Our drains back up almost weekly in both the shower and the bathroom sink. The scaffolding has finally been removed on our half of the building--but ZERO cleanup of the exterior was done and our windows and balcony are filthy. HERE COMES THE BEST PART...we just got a notice from the property that we have one month to decide if we are staying or not (our lease is up in 2 months). If we immediately agree to sign another year lease (can you imagine?) they will "only" raise our rent $200 per month (roughly a 20%) increase. But, if we want to just go month to month (which is typical after being a good tenant for the first year's lease, always paying on time, etc.) then our rent will go up $700 PER MONTH! That's a 60% plus increase! BTW, during the construction I asked two different leasing agents if they were going to raise our rents--both assured me that wouldn't happen and that they would "make things right" by rewarding the people who had stuck out this whole mess with reasonable increases if any, and not to worry, there would be no surprises. Now I'm curious what they think a "surprising" increase would be. Double? Triple the rent? And let me make one more thing clear...it's not like the building is renovated and beautiful now. It's not even close to finished. It's gross. Why would anyone who'd been through this sign ANY kind of lease until trust had been reestablished? Why chase away tenants? If you are looking at this property, do not believe anything you are told by the well meaning leasing staff. They simply cannot and will not deliver. I really wanted this to work, and even up until that notice they delivered, would have been open to trying, but instead we get to start all over and move again. read more

So I have lived here almost 2 years. I have seen it all, change in ownership, new management, construction for a year and I will say it has not been pleasant, a few weeks ago I would have written 1 star but now I must say I am going to re-sign my lease and enjoy all the amenities that I have been living without since construction. Since construction the place really does look amazing. It is finally competitive to the places in the area and the neighbors are going to be much better with the higher rent average. The location cannot be beat walking everywhere, 2 blocks away from the Edgewater hotel, 15 minutes from Downtown, 5 minutes from the sculpture park, 10 minutes from queen anne and the space needle. it is amazing. Berkshire is in the process of hiring new management so hopefully the management and staff problems will correct themselves. The units are expensive but they are up graded and good size. The security of the building has been lacking since construction people come in and out but hopefully it will get better once there are less strangers around. Over the last 2 years the place has had its ups and downs but the transition is almost over and the staff is working hard to correct problems there is plenty of good about this building and I am optimistic, and you should be too. I lived here over 3 years. Under Elliott Bay Plaza management, it was was a well-run place to live. Every since the Berkshires on Elliott management has taken over, it has been a downhill slide. Maintenance was awful. One time, I had the light fixture in my kitchen stop working. Even after multiple phone calls to the maintenance hotline and visits to the leasing office, it still took them a month to fix it (yes, a month of cooking in the dark). My dishwasher barely worked. I complained about it multiple times and maintenance insisted it was fine. I needed to rewash dishes by hand after taking them out of the dishwasher. It is nice to be in the apartment I am now and actually have dishes come out of the dishwasher clean. At move out, they charged me for replacing the carpet. It only had some minor stains on it though that could have been easily removed with carpet cleaning. The carpet was just old and needed replacing. Actually, they charged me for both cleaning the carpet and replacing the carpet. Then, they also incorrectly calculated the amortization on the carpet. They at least eventually corrected these errors after much arguing with them. If you live here, you should not expect to get your damage deposit back at all (deserving or not). Then, there is the mice to deal with. I won't strongly recommend NOT living in this apartment complex. read more

I really try not to complain. I work in the service industry and I always hate people that just say things suck. That being said, this sucks. When I moved to Seattle I was really impressed with the building and the management team. The staff acutally seemed like nice people, they knew me and my husband, worked really hard to find us the right apartment when we switched apartments etc. Then a new company came in and it has been a progressive downhill slide. The stories about construction are true I spent a year with plastic wrap completely covering ALL my windows and my patio, construction workers wandered past all day, my dog went crazy everytime someone wandered past or onto our patio. I asked if there would be a compensation for the construction and told that my level of construction was not enough to warrent a rent reduction. Looks wise, the building did not look like it needed (or got) a huge renovation, but hey maybe it was a structural issue. Next were a series of smal creature comfort upgrades. the newly updated clubhouse was updated again (pool table different furniture) New dog walk (really nicely done, more attractive than the last area) New patio furniture (meh, not to my taste but okay) New furniture through out the building (okay) So they made all these changes to stuff that was fine to begin with. Now we have a pool table that I rarely see people play on, and I would hate to be in the apartment next to a billiards room. My rent keeps increasing They are really not nice downstairs, (the exception being the lower the employee is on the totem pole the more enjoyable they are. The entry level leasing agents are really quite pleasant, but the manager and assistant manager are AWFUL). These are the issues Ive had since this company took over For 3 months they would threaten to evict me and my husband because we did not pay our full rent. For 3 months my husband would go downstairs and explain that they were charging us for a parking spot that we no longer had. Never an apology for their mistake, they always treated us like we were in the wrong and were lazy shady tenants. Were not. I dropped off my dry cleaning downstairs to have it picked up. It never made it. The dry cleaner called me and said the office couldnt find it. About $400.00 of clothes disappeared. Okay, that situation suck and I was bummed about it but I share in that responsibility. All I wanted was some empathetic lip service from downstairs, just lie to me and make the sad face and tell me how hard you tried to find it. Instead I got that stupid uptalk voice and "wow, yeah that sucks!" "weird I saw it here, and now its not here! Are you sure you didnt pick it up already" That is really the mind set. "Are you sure this isnt YOUR fault?" The rest of it is small but consistent with the attitude. I have been ignored so the manager could finish her text, easy fix just acknowledge me, you can finish your text but dont turn away from me like a pissy teenager. they are closed on Sunday so if you have an issue and work M-F good luck on saturday. While they are out showing apartments all day and the door to the office is always locked. There is no drop box for rent or documents to leave for them. They have a great location but so does just about every apartment in Belltown. They charge Luxury Apartment prices and dont deliver the product or the service. I really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and be forgiving but after all of this, 4 years here, constant price increases and being treated most recently, like I should be grateful that I am allowed to live here. I am done. I dont know how quickly I can extricate myself from this place but I will not be looking to spend any more money with BE. If you are looking for an apartment look around! There are tons of great ones for the same price that recognize you choose to give them a large amount of money every month and will treat you like a customer not a cow to be milked. Thanks read more

EBP started out as a nice place to live. After the management change, everything has gone to ruins. This is the most over priced place I have ever lived. Without lowering the rents, they have completely demolished the face of this building. The management is horrible. I tried to get a hold of a lady for over a week. I've lived here at EBP for two years now and I LOVE it. At first when Berkshire took over, they had some problems with cleaning the hallways and fitness center. After a little bit it was all taken care of. I don't understand why people are saying that management is rude or doesn't know what they are doing. I've paid my rent on time and have never had any problems with them. I will say that the construction is a bit much to deal with, but management has been understanding and they have no problem listening to my worries. The construction is really only noisy from 9-5, so if you work a normal job, I doubt you'll even notice that it's there. They also just redid the fitness room, which is a huge plus. I honestly believe if you are a good tenant and turn in your rent in on time you won't have any problems living here. read more

I used to love living here...why used to? If you scroll through the reviews you will see how happy people were in 2010 and how miserable people are in 2011. This is because the building changed ownership and sold out to Berkshire. Berkshire is a large property management company that oversees properties like Elliott Bay Plaza and the fiery pits of hell. We signed a lease for a year...the year is up this month and we have everything packed and a van rented. To our surprise the lovely management informed us that we have to pay an additional month of rent because we didnt give 20 days notice. "Notice?!" I cry, "its the end of our lease and we cant move out without paying for an additional month past the expiration of our lease?!"....the argument went on and on and my attorney is now involved. Oh, but it doesn't stop there. The once friendly staff was replaced with...well, a few of them are nice. Many amenities are no longer available or are not maintained. The common areas are filthy when they used to be spotless. Scratched paint from people moving in and out used to be touched up immediately...now all the marks are building up.... If the old owners still had this place we would probably stay. read more

I've been living at EBP for 17 months now and my second contract expires next November . I wish I've never extended my leasing ! Last December a new company took over the apartments ( Berkshire) and everything changed ! They didn't clean the common areas/ corridors for at least 3 weeks ( it used to be clean daily) , no walk through were done in order to organize, clean, fix lights, everything smelled garbage and cheap products after they eventually cleaned . I talked to 2 managers before a final Property Manager ( Diana) moved in . She didn't know anything about my complains and she said that she will fix everything eventually because on a transition time things will take more time( did I request any change? why I should pay the consequences ?). I claimed a FedEx for a week till they realized that it was in their office and they now overcharged me . The on line option to pay rent was " no longer working ( even though they sent us an email confirming that it was) but of course they forgot to mention that " so I paid on line and later I had to pay with a check . An employee ( a temp as many of them since they moved here) told me that even it was late I could keep the schedule and pay after the beginning of the month this February but no..I guess Diana ( the Property Manager) didn't agree with this decision ! They charged me $75 late fee and $ 5 daily without letting me know for 2 weeks when a Pay or Eviction letter was left at my door . I talked to Timothy who promised me a credit after I told him the whole story . Last Friday morning I went to the office and as Diana was taking too long to adjust the statement and I needed to go to work timothy and I agreed that I should pay in whole and a credit will be made on my account . As today no credit was made and $5 were charged . So I called and Diana said that she only could credit the $5 ...I guess Timothy's word is no worthly at all ! . When I noticed things going bad on January I called and left messages to the Region Property Managers of Berkshire . After 3 messages Mr Scott ( from TX) called me and apologized because of the delay ( a weather situation) we agreed to talked the following day . I called , message was left , he never called me back ! What can you expect from a Corporation like this ? I guess nothing !!! Life used to be great before with Riverstone ! read more

I was very excited to be moving into my first apartment with my Husband in 2008. We had a few issues because he travels for business about 95% of the time so I had to handle most of the apartment paperwork myself. Juli, who was working with apartment leases at the time was very helpful but she has since been promoted to a position that has less interaction with residents. After living in our first apartment for less than a year I asked to change apartments because I was literally not sleeping. I had complained a few time about my noisy upstairs neighbors, who were constantly fighting, the front office must have told them I complained because the noise increased to unbearable amount. I was able to change apartments but for a small fortune. My new apartment was good, but defiantly not worth the cost. Remember I lived alone about 95% of the time but my utility bills were astronomical. Water/Sewer was easily over $75 a month because they meter by floor not individual apartments. Then to make maters worse when I said the bill was too much I was given the run around that they were looking into the high water/sewer bills and for half a year I paid, basically some other residents high bill. Parking is a problem, and you will incur damage to your car because other tenants do not care about their vehicles. Also parking spots are assigned but be prepared to have people park in your spot. The noise in building 1 is alright but forget living in building 2. The grounds are so-so. Dog poop is everywhere because people do not pick up after their animals, and the apartment building does not really enforce their breed restrictions and size limitations. Overall, maintenance was good, but the staff is horrible. The two leasing ladies Brittney and Camille are so dumb and gossip all the time. I overheard them gossiping several times about residents since they talked so loud.
