Ellenhorn is the type of "hospital without walls" outpatient treatment facility for people who have a lot of money to spend with mental health concerns to receive daily treatment. They will accept really anyone with manageable enough mental health issues who can afford their practice that is until the money runs out or they believe that you are actually not the best candidate for their program and for your information, this can occur at any time even after they accept you as a client. For example, you pay month per month so they can involuntarily discharge you after "x" number of months if something you stated during your daily team meetings makes you deemed actually unfit for their incredibly expensive unique program or just "being too much to handle." Essentially, stating that they did all they can do for you when really that is just an excuse for them to prematurely push out of their practice for whatever reasons. If you decide to still stay in Boston after treatment, then they will just pass you along to an expensive home care like agency who treats you like a mentally disabled person with lots of money and additionally, they will remind you how fortunate you are to not be in a home which not only is extremely unprofessional behavior but it also makes you feel somewhat like a failure. In reality, their main concern is how financially exclusive their practice is and making sure each of their therapists receives their pay all while putting their clients' concerns regarding their current treatment aside. Clients will also gossip or exclude other patients who they believe are just not up to their financial or "mentally well" standard thus creating a very lonely experience. Additionally, the therapists they hire are really three-star clinicians who are actually unequipped to handle patients with real psychiatric problems. I believe that if the therapists here focused more on actually treating their patients rather than mainly focusing on how much money they are receiving, then Ellenhorn would become an actual therapeutic environment with more effective results. read more

I don't think one should refer to a Yelp review to make decisions about attending this type of program, but I did want to say that I found the program very helpful and enabled me to reclaim my life. The program is highly individual, and may not be the best fit for everyone (as is true of all mental health programs), but was a very good fit for me. They support harm reduction and not abstinence-only treatments for substance use, and there are a lot of activities in the community. I was assertive about my care needs, and they respected my boundaries and independence. read more

I just don't think there is enough information out there from people who have gone through the program. Disclaimer: Spent several months at Ellenhorn, did not have a good experience. Entry You interview. They make sure you are the right "fit" for the program in an assessment type meeting and then call your doctor, therapist or former program to follow up/verify. I am not sure who they screen out because the program is catered to fit the individual. What I saw in terms of their clients in my months there, as long as you can pay you can play. They will take A N Y B O D Y. First Month Assessment The first month is an "assessment" where they determine what your needs are and at the end of your month you will have a road map meeting for your treatment plan. No real special insights here after paying roughly 17k for the first month before you even start your treatment. Boarding you'll pay more. Then you pay monthly depending on what kind of program you want. Road Map Meeting At the end of the month you have a team meeting where they give you a report that your point person has written up about your needs and then separate recommendations from each member of your team. I don't even know why they call it a road map. IT IS NOT A FREAKING MAP. CHANGE THE NAME PLS. Treatment They have the Quest program which is good for some people to like, get out and do stuff. They go on trips etc., and there are meetings available at ellenhorn about mental health, substance abuse and some really random ones like, flower arrangements. Weird. You'll have anywhere from 1 to 4 appointments a day depending on what tier you sign up for. You can change this at anytime. Obviously, the higher tier is (more $$$$) and gives you more hours to work with and they have flexibility to "meet you in the community", frankly I gave up on this feature for many reasons. But this can work very well for some! Your Team You'll get a team catered to what kind of plan you need, which sounds nice and fancy, but they have limited staff who can take on different types of roles and they will adjust depending on what you need. Some do this better than others. My primary was useless and overly sensitive, I felt like I was constantly on eggshells. Overall, I didn't like my team and to this day I can't find a whole lot of value in what they provided. Wish I could though! This is nit-picky but I gotta say it: they constantly check the time, ten minutes in and this one clinician would look at his watch and be like, "alright, well we have 20 minutes left", it happened constantly and reflects a larger issue of professional ism that was lacking. I regret that I didn't speak up about this because it happened every single meeting with him and many others. Rude. You have to work with their psychiatrist, they handle all meds because they want to control everything (cute, right?)... weirdly they say they work in conjunction with your current provider (never called or communicated with mine). The building that they work out of is weird and rickety. Parking sucks! Arlington is cool though. Good area but crappy "campus" and bad gym. I'm gonna stop here. Maybe the program works for some so I don't want to dissuade you if you are seriously considering it, but I feel like there is seriously a lack of real information out there about this place from people who have been through it... I wasted my time and wish for you not to waste yours or your loved ones... which is why I am writing this review. Some clients work with Ellenhorn for several years rather then getting the support they need to move on with their lives, and it was really sad to see. I saw some people who seemed to need that type of attention but from what I saw overall, its just expensive coddling. I would not want to send my teenager here because the ones I met there were so coddled and I felt worried for their futures. L TL;DR: Ellenhorn grossly overvalues their services, felt unsafe or uncomfortable in the lobby at times due to the kind of clients they accept, clinicians would no show often, scheduling was a pain, road map meeting useless, if you are going to spend that kind of money just get an amazing therapist because you don't need 6 sub-par clinicians to tell you what you already know, doesn't accept insurance, wish i had a time machine to avoid this place. Caution. This program can help some. But they prioritize keeping the patients independent at all times and keeping them in their program. And they highly medicate. Our daughter died in their care due to medication overdoses. And they knew she was not taking as prescribed with a history of addiction. If a loved one is not getting better, they do not recommend other programs or suggest alternatives. Staff is nice. But unwilling to admit when not helping. Prakash and Ellenhorn helped me build a better life. I couldn't be more grateful. What makes it special? The people, first and foremost. The staff is talented, diverse, and flexible. They have the best psychiatrist in the Greater Boston area, Matt Bernstein. If you or a family member is really struggling with mental health issues, he will help you. Their personal trainer, Nick, is totally inspiring. The residential staff is fun and supportive. And their family therapist, Darren--not any easy job, by the way--never puts people on the defense. Finally, the treatment program is pretty cutting edge (they are always trying to find a better way to do things). The team approach gives you lots of opportunities to connect, grow, and plan for a better life. I couldn't recommend P & E more highly. read more

I would not recommend this place. It's not worth the price. Believe me it is pricey. A lot of the staff will feel like overbearing parents. It's set up, so they treat us like children. I get the feeling that, these people are more given instructions, like operating a machine than dealing with people. I'm not sure they're given extensive training, screened, or require much qualification. Some can be cool to hang around with, even seems more like friends than staff. Some are just awkward though. Even, worse, some act like they're the law or something. You have to tell them where your going, and, have your phone, so they can check in. They check in excessively too. Many teens aren't on such short a leash, let alone adults. I went out with my friend for the day, said I'd be a while. They even packed meds for later. I didn't tell them, but I figured if they call they 'd leave a message like they usually do. I get back, well before curfew, and they've already called my parent... And the police. Thankfully he, was a cool guy, very polite, kind, and professional. He just asked if I was, safe and stuff. He showed great patience, considering the nonsense he was called over for. I have much respect. There's more with such a fascist system, you would think they would get the important stuff down like meds. The nurses, have messed up my dose many times, and bear in mind they come ever day, with only 24 hours worth. I'm on them all the time, and sometimes my reminder fall on deaf ears, and it's too late, and that's it I skip a dose. Yet, they're such busy bodies of who's where, and doing what. They randomly, and frequently search rooms, with out suspicion of illegal, or dangerous possessions. I have a tough situation here. It's supposed to be voluntary, but don't have a place to go. It was pretty rough at home, and my parents had no patience. Now they think they're doing me right by sending me here. often, sleep, or smoke cigarettes all day long . This place doesn't help. Plus my parents, are confused themselves.They never knew what to do with me. They so desperate,to buy into this, and clueless, what to look for. As far as the founders, I don't see them as much, as others. However, Dr. Prakash is narrow minded, and is disrespectful, to opposing views, and honest questions. I had a bad experience with physiology, and have legitimate concerns. Dr. Ellenhorn is much more open minded, and sensitive to me. He listens, and doesn't assume, and push an agenda. He seems to get people better than her, who treats people like textbooks. However most decisions are made by people under them. You have your own team, and their "individual" care can suck. I would move mountains to be able to have a family member cared for by the people and program at Prakash Ellenhorn. The staff at Prakash Ellenhorn are highly professional. They are also exceptionally caring. Our family credits them with turning around the life of our beloved son, leading him out of the abyss of mental illness. The program is carefully and individually thought out. The focus is towards integrating each person back into a social setting in which he or she can be comfortable. Prakash Ellenhorn is not just a place to hang out. There is work to be done each day....work geared to making you believe that you can make it back. The effort is enormous for some. It works because everyone at P&E are pulling for you. We are also very grateful for the sensitive way the therapists have included our whole family in the therapy. I found Ellenhorn to be a life saver for my son. He was an out-patient. They wrapped their arms around him and treated him with respect and kindness. They gave him the tools, through various therapies to move on with his life and succeed. Each therapist was encouraging and thoughtful about his next step. My experience with these people was nothing less than horrible. The two owners Dr. Prakash and Ross Ellenhorn were dishonest and incompetent in my opinion. I believe they are greedy and disingenuous and both have a real problem considering anything to be true other than what THEY think is fact. Their "holier than thou" attitude resulted in my relative getting much more ill while depleting my bank account at the same time. Everyone was very kind, and thoughtful, and I really liked the team treatment approach. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to finally get out of going in and out of places. I"m a big fan of Ellenhorn. We visited the Arlington location after my child was discharged from a mental health stay in a clinic and we really liked Ellenhorn's "home" and facilities---but my child really wanted to be in NYC and not live at Ellenhorn, and Ellenhorn's services were just beginning in NYC. I"m glad we had a little patience and joined their "out-patient model" as soon as they were up and running in NYC last Fall. Their team approach is very unique, from the parents' perspective and from the client's. Our child's therapist and psychiatrist, in particular, made us all feel that our child was being taken care of in a more holistic and informal way than you'd find elsewhere. Where else can a child have a therapy session in the comfort of a coffee shop, an AA meeting or bicycling in Central Park? And I didn't have to wonder or coordinate the professionals who were talking with each other about my child's care; they worked together seamlessly and effectively and made my child feel truly heard. Now that my child has returned to college and is doing quite well, the relationship with the therapist has continued via Skype and some in-person sessions back in NY. The lack of 5 stars in my review is because the services ARE very expensive---and submitting to insurance is not easy. Eventually I did get a decent amount of direct services reimbursed by insurance though and we certainly don't regret the decision to work with Ellenhorn! read more
