What a WONDERFUL little campground! Very clean and nice bathrooms! A definite *10* ! Our campsite for our 25' RV was a very nice back-in site right on Elk Creek. The manager, Logan was so nice. He helped us out with an awkward situation re a neighbor's bright light, and he handled it very diplomatically. The one thing that disappointedly me was the laundry room and its facilities. $2.50 per SMALL washer (there were 3), and $1.50 per dryer (there were 4). The room seemed dirty, the dryers seemed dirty. The whole room needs some attention and love. I don't think we'll be traveling thru Glenwood Springs again, but you never know .... if we do, we'll be sure to reserve a campsite at Elk Creek Campground! read more

This was a great find!! I grew up in the valley and remembered how pretty the area was bit had never been to Elk Creek before. What a gorgeous place! About 10 min off the highway, right next to a beautiful creek, nestled in a picturesque valley, this campground has it all. Nice clean, rustic cabins and large camped spots, dog park, fishing and great WiFi. LOL The service was great and the staff was friendly and accommodating!! read more

I'm going to regret this. I know I'm going to regret this, but this campground was wonderful. You never know when you are going to an independently run site, but this was well maintained; the staff were competent and pleasant; and did I say that it is in a Western Colorado dell, filled with mature trees: spruce, cottonwood, and juniper. The sites are nicely thought out. Oh yes, there is a mountain stream that runs right through the camp, wonderful trails nearby. True, it is not right off the interstate. It will take you five minutes to get there, and you probably don't want to arrive for the first time after dark, but yeah if you like a little bit of shangrila, this one is for you read more

It was almost 9pm on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and we couldn't get to our hotel in Eagle due to a massive accident on the 70. We were on a cross-country road trip with our two dogs, and every hotel for miles was booked solid. I called Elk Creek in the hope of getting a campsite to just park and sleep in our truck. To my surprise, Rachel answered the phone and told us they had a cancellation and could offer us a cabin next to a rushing creek! Let me tell you- that this snafu in our trip turned out to be the highlight! The campground owners kept the store open for us to arrive and made sure we had everything we needed. They were so welcoming and kind, and when I say this campground is beautiful and peaceful, it's an understatement. Our cabin was perfect, the bathroom was clean, comfortable, and well-stocked, and even the other campers couldn't have been nicer. Huge thanks to our hosts, who just recently took over management. We'll be making Elk Creek Campground our go-to spot to stay next time, and hopefully, for more than one night! read more

What a fantastic time! This is what I pictured all camp grounds would be when I bought my motorhome. (I've quickly learned most are just disappointing.) This was such a beautiful place with a stream to fish or swim in, fire pits, nice picnic tables, great hookups, BEAUTIFUL flower arrangements, and cute cabins if you don't have a camper. My wife and I needed to be in the Glenwood Springs area for a family emergency with short notice. Every RV Park and campground within a few hours was completely booked. No one was willing to work with us. I called Elk Creek and after talking to Shane and explaining our plight, he said "give me a few minutes and I'll call you back". I figured that was it, I'd never hear from him again. Sure enough, not only did he call back, he found a spot for us. I had no idea how long we would need to be in Colorado, but Shane said, "just get here and we'll figure it out". They accommodated us for three months! We moved RV sites three times, but they made it easy and worked around our schedule. Every site in the cozy campground is excellent. Located 5 minutes up the mountain from the quaint little town of New Castle CO, Elk Creek is nestled tight in the woods with the creek carving a meandering path through the campground. Fresh snowmelt and rain water rush through the rocky creek bed and tiny water falls creating a soothing symphony of natural music. Mother Nature surrounds you with towering evergreens throughout the grounds. It is a gorgeous piece of property. Shane, the owner has taken a lot of pride in this property by improving everything you can think off including new waste water systems. Each RV spot has its unique positives with some hugging the creek side others tucked in the woods and large rig spots centered amongst the RV sites and the variety of cabins. All of them have new full electric service (50A, 30A and 20A on every pole), new septic runs and great water pressure. They are adding tent only sites on the other side of the creek and are hoping to add more RV sites and possibly even a wedding venue. The entire staff, Mark, Steve, Lisa, Tony, Logan and Shane (and of course his trusty side kick Zeus - one of the smartest and coolest dogs we ever met) were very accommodating, friendly and helpful. Shane's communication is excellent. His entire team is spot on, if and when a camper drove over a septic pipe, or a kid clogged a sewer hookup, a truck backed into a water supply, it was always fixed within minutes with little to no disruption. The showers and public bathrooms are clean as well is the laundry service. Overall a great place. read more

What a wonderful spot! We are mostly dispersed campers and don't typically like staying in developed campgrounds but if they were all like Elk Creek we might change our minds. The staff was all so friendly and welcoming, the spots were small but beautiful and so well maintained, the on-site, off-leash dog park made it so much nicer for our pups, and the little touches, such as pails of water on each fire ring to ensure fire safety, was just extra sweet. Beautiful, serene camping along creek with new ownership Not your typical asphalt RV parking lot. Rarely can you find a full hookup site in a natural setting along a roaring creek. The park has a variety of accommodations with full hookup sites, a "tent" section with electricity (lovely for small RVS as well) and log cabins. Many of the sites are along the creek as it meanders through the camp. Location is great as well. Easy drive from I-70 but far enough to be out of town. Also a quick drive into Glenwood Springs. New owners purchased park in April 2021 and are improving facilities while maintaining the natural feel. Check-in was easy even without reservations. The new owners are very friendly and welcoming. read more

OVERALL: We stayed here two nights in a tent and had a fantastic experience (minus the rain, which was out of their control). The creek was crystal clear -- loved listening to it babble at night. People were great, albeit a little hard to get ahold of if you're trying to make a reservation. Location is great -- it's removed from I-70 and the train, so minimal noise. It's not huge and commercialized, which I appreciate. And there's good privacy between most of the tent sites. And tent sites have water and electric. CAMPGROUND: There are two sides to the campground on each side of the creek -- generally one with cabins and for RVs and one for tents (sites 43-67). Although there was a trailer hooked up with the side "for tents" and a tent next to RVs. Our first night there, it was just us and the trailer on our side of the creek for the night. We had three other tent campers in addition the next night. But everyone was spaced out. Something I did notice was that we had a lot of privacy provided by the trees on the "tent side" of the campground. But there was less separation between sites on the RV side, which makes sense. TENT SITE: Our campsite was right on the creek. Most of the sites are raised a little bit off from the creek. Ours had two "sections" -- a raised area where we put the tent and then our fire ring/grill/tables were creek-level. It worked out perfectly. The ground was gravel, which initially was concerning to me (I'm used to dirt or grass). But when it rained all day one day, I was grateful for it. There was an electrical hook up and a water spigot on our site. There was also a wood burning grill, a fire ring and two picnic tables, although most just have one table and just the fire ring. The walk to the dumpster was short, as was the walk to the bathrooms. If you're terrified of animals, don't camp in 67-55. They pretty much back right up to wilderness. But I'd expect you're prepared if you're out tent camping in Colorado next to a creek. Something BIG came up and sniffed our tent the first night we were there -- probably smelled our dog. Just be smart -- put your food in your car at night. Lock the doors (bears open doors). Get rid of your trash each night. Respect their space; they'll respect yours. AMENITIES: The bathrooms aren't anything fancy, but they're clean and that's what counts. They are also heated (thank God). My husband said he didn't have hot water, but I sure did -- HOT water. SERVICE: Everyone here was super nice. When I made a reservation over the phone, the guy I talked to was friendly and informative. And when we checked in the lady was so sweet. We had a few really good conversations. The only thing I would say to be aware of is that their hours vary. So, if you need batteries or something, don't count on them being open. That being said, they'll go out of their way to help you. They didn't have the size batteries we needed, and she grabbed some for us when she went into town. And everything was closed one evening, but I saw her walking out of the bathroom, and she opened up real quick so I could get some more firewood (ours got soaked). Town isn't far if you need something and can't wait though. COST: The cost of a tent site was just under $30/night. Totally fair. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: 1) Rifle Falls (30 min. northwest) and 2) Hanging Lake (20 min. east) are both must-dos. We only made it to Hanging Lake because we lost a day to the rain. 3) There's a small diner you pass on your way in that has good food if for some reason you (like us) get rained on while camping. 4) You're only 15 minutes from Glenwood Springs, so you can always hit the hot springs, too. 5) We drove through New Castle (just north of where you come in) and it's quaint. A few good eateries if you don't want to go to the diner. 5) And if you pass over the bridge (instead of getting back on I-70), go left when it dead ends, there's an apartment complex you can park at and access the CO River. It has some good views, a trail and park benches. 6) If you keep driving a little further down the road, there's a neat old abandoned mine, too. We'll definitely be back. read more

Not a bad campground. Your basic stuff, but isolated, which is nice. We paid for two nights, but after being gone all day the first day, we arrived back to find our site (site 19) taken by a large RV that was already setup (we had left nothing at our site). Mangement just said, "Do you want site 17?". So we said yes, even though we had liked our previous site (and had left some beer in the creek at the old site...which I recovered later!). No real sorry or anything, just "here is what is left....take it or leave it". Oh well, it was all good. Showers/bathrooms are standard camping fare (weak showers, bathrooms were just ok...not clean, not ultra dirty...again, it is camping). Staff was friendly. Entrance is clear, but exit is not. We got lost trying to get out, and I saw two others the next day also driving around trying to figure out how to get out. I would go again for cheap digs if I was in the area. The trip to Rifle Stat e Water Falls (15 miles away) is worth the trip. read more

This place was alright not very clean but the river was nice. We stayed for a week and the sleeping was not very good because there was no AC. The most disturbing part was when my kids had found a bird that fell out of its nest because it was too big and had checked on him everyday for the past 4 days then all of the sudden the two owners go to put him back up in the tree after we tell them if he falls out again he will die but they didn't listen. I woke up this morning to my kids crying because the baby bird they adored so much was dead, so my daughter went to tell the owner and all she said was "oh, so sad" in a sarcastic tone. I was very disappointed in how they handled the situation after seeing the bird was fine on the ground. read more

After a road closure, we found this hidden Gem! It's under new ownership, only open for 5 days when we got there. The super nice family was very inviting, helpful, and happy. Our shaded campsite was right on Elk Creek and very cozy. Hook ups were all new and great. Plenty of hikes, fish to be caught, and nature to enjoy! We definitely recommend staying here and hope to come back soon! This campground has a 70 year history. Don't pay attention to reviews before July 2022, the previous situation was nothing good compared to what this great family has done. read more

Exactly what we needed after a long day of travel. Right if the 70, tucked back in along the creek. Super friendly staff, quiet and serene. Property has a dog "park" and other amenities. Every spot has electricity and water. If you really need sewer hookups they have designated spaces, however the more secluded spots have only power and water. Would happily of stayed here longer than one night but had to get back on the road. Will come back when we pass through! read more

Such a magical location! Rented a little cabin with the doggos here. It has a campfire in front of each cabin, and the surroundings are absolutely awesome. If I go again, I will get one with a bathroom inside it because the communal one was not my fav, but I'm not knocking it either. It's just camping life. read more

Elk Creek Campground is especially awesome if you never like to shower or go to the bathroom! We've stayed here before because it's such a beautiful location but there's absolutely no maintenance. It's literally a sh*t show! We have water coming up through the shower, sink & toilet, running all over the floor and all they say is...we just had that drain cleaned. No one came to check it out or mop up the water. So then we went to use the community restroom. Filthy and no toilet paper, not even one square -anywhere. I've camped my entire life and I've never seen such a run down place. It's a beautiful property but it's sad the owners are running it into the ground. read more

Overall a really nice stay. The sites are nice, albeit a bit close together. We had 2 small RVs and a van/tent and were fine with three sites. The person we spoke with to make the reservation was very friendly and accommodating for our group. They put us right on the creek, which was really nice and the RVs both had water/electric hookups. I thought the rates were a little high, but I don't camp a lot, so maybe I'm just out of the loop. There's a nice little store on site and good size shower/bathroom house. The only drawback was that they were having some MAJOR plumbing issues (toilets not flushing, sinks not draining) when we were there last weekend. That was kind of a bummer, but didn't impact us too much. If it weren't for the bathroom issues, this would easily be four stars. read more

I spent last weekend camping at Elk Creek Campground along with six others and had a really fun time. We had 3 sites together that were across the bridge and next to the creek. It was great sleeping and hearing the water roll by! I usually camp in state or national parks, or just in forest land, so the private campground was a little different feel for me. Like most things in life it had it's pros (a general store that sells firewood and ice, options to stay in cabins, a beautiful & peaceful setting, and full blown restrooms with showers) and it's cons (pricey, very small sites, overflowing trash, broken down and not stocked bathrooms, poor signage directing you to your site, and giant holes in the road). Personally speaking, when camping I am more than good with a vault toilet for a few days, and honestly I'd rather have seen a few of them spread out around the place than deal with long lines to get into a quasi working toilet - especially in the morning. Showering while camping over a weekend makes no sense to me so I did not even try the showers. It also would've been nice if they had real fire pits with grates you can cook on, as opposed to the fire rings of rocks which our sites had on them. I would think that with the fire danger that can exist most years having above ground fires would be much riskier. Lastly, two of the three picnic tables on our sites were teetering and on the brink of collapse, some attention in this area is definitely needed. Really, the more that I think about it the more I think this is one of those 2.5 star kind of reviews, but the friends I was with easily pushed it up to 3 stars. (First and foremost, make sure you are looking at Elk Creek Campground NEW CASTLE, CO- huge difference than the "other" Elk Creek Campground) So my family stayed for four nights (supposed to be five) in mid-August. The place was packed on Saturday and empty by Sunday night. It is a fantastic location by the creek and no noise (cars/trains/etc)- we camped in a tent (Site #51- awesome). I can wholeheartedly understand where the RV people are coming from- narrow side streets, steep road down with little turning room into the campground itself (honestly I don't know how they fit, but they do)! Since we were there four nights, I can also say the tent side (a few rv spots)- the side with #51 is much more desirable of a location then the other side of the campground- still tight in some spots. I'm one of those people who like to "peek" their head in at everything. One more fact- strangely I got a strong data signal at that campsite for web surfing/mapquesting, but no phone. The other side of the campground I couldn't pick up any signal of any sort?!. Matt was great about being accommodating as we had to change our arrival dates. He didn't charge me for the couple day out change, which he could have easily done! We arrived there at 6 am on a Saturday (we paid for Friday night) and found a squatter on our site- heck there were lots of squatters that came late at night and left before Matt did his rounds. (I know because he has a sign on the door with reservation #s and a sign in book.) My squatter moved after making a fuss. His honesty policy might need to be revamped. (The office is only open ~3 hrs a day, which makes for perfect squatter situation. No one knows.) Surprisingly, all of our stuff was safe and untouched for being there four nights. The bathrooms were a bit scary. Mold was all around the bottom of the showers, stall, and changing room connected to the shower. The curtains were ripped and didn't close all of the way. The showers look like they hadn't been cleaned in a year, if that. Wear your shower shoes! The towel bins had duct tape. The toilet paper roll holders were broken and the toilet paper fell on the ground numerous times. The key code to the bathroom hadn't been in use for years. Stay out of the bathrooms and everything else is perfect. (The stinky part is we stayed for four nights; it is not like we stayed for one night and are judging this place!) If they invest a few bucks/time in the restrooms/showers this place could really be awesome! Honestly, we aren't "real" campers, but in a heartbeat I'd stay here again- if there was actually something to do in the area. My husband would have died without the electricity and water. (He's not much of a camper or outdoor person.) The creek was clean and beautiful; no bear visits or other animals; the bathrooms were less than desirable, but not unusable; and the location of the campground was out of a Colorado magazine- tall evergreens, spruces, with a mountain backdrop. P.S. Be cautious about the Elk Creek Campground website (attachment) and email attachments (aka- reservation receipt)- my computer keeps saying a virus may be attached or it could harm my computer and not to open the emails. My husband has two virus protectors and a firewall protecting my computer- so I don't think it is my computer. P.P.S. For the other reviewers that mention toilet paper and their campsite not being pristine- you're camping people. Yes, toilet paper, etc are gross, but during our five day stay campers can be gross- an attempt to burn a Walmart camp chair, a broken coffee pot, and other misc stuff was left behind or attempted to be burned by campers. Not just for this campground, but please remember these are your fellow campers (the ones that keep everyone else up at night) not necessarily the campground managers themselves. read more

This could have been a super cool campground but it was very unkempt. Dirty bathrooms, garbage around the camp ground and a office that seemed open up when ever it wanted too. We didn't have any hot water but I give them props for calling us and tell us before hand. All in all I won't stay here again and pay what we paid for a campground with dirty facilities. read more

Pretty location near a creek in a camping desert along i-70 but otherwise I would not recommend this place. First of all, they want you to pay $25 a night to tent camp there, $30 if your by the creek. I have camped in some incredible places and never payed more than $20, and elk creek is not quite incredible. I fact it's kinda gross, there was trash all over our camp site and at the edge of the site near the creek there was unburied human feces with toilet paper covering it up. The camp sites could not be any closer together without having to share a fire pit with your neighbors. Anyway, if they are going to advertise and charge like a 5 star situation, I expect a more pristine experience. read more

How is this campground not five star reviewed for a CAMPGROUND! I literally stopped a short drive off of the highway at this campsite after trying 4 other state parks on my way back from Capital Reef. To my surprise, there were plenty of tent sites open. They also have RV sites and cabins. The cost was about $40, which is a bit more than a $26.00 fee for state sites, but this comes with a running shower, a little store, and a game room. The showers were not the cleanest, but it is a campground, so in my opinion any running water I am thankful for. Most of the tent sites are located on the creek, which makes for a very relaxing night of sleep. You can barely hear anything. My only advice is to dim the lights of the main store at night. The light is directly across the creek from the tents, and was very bright. I did not get the opportunity to meet any of the staff, but I will, because I cannot wait to come back. PS If you can reserve, Ii would absolutely recommend site 42! read more

A hidden gem, we had no reservations for here but we decided to come to see if there was a spot. We tent camped right next to the river and it was amazing. The views were spectacular. Some bonuses were that there are showers, toilets, and washers and dryers for clothes. The one down side would probably be that -i guess- one of the owners kid kept riding their four-wheeler around the tent areas but besides that it was great read more

The site we had was awesome! Right next to the river. We had an rv so didn't use or see the bathrooms. The only negatives were distance from glenwood springs and attractions and a little pricey. Nobody was there to manage which was fine. We paid over the phone. It was a little slightly spooky how far out there it was and secluded but I'm a city girl and I'm sure some people would love the seclusion. Rustic. read more

We were planning to tent camp here for 2 nights with my family. I called, and they said they would give us a site big enough for 2 tents. Upon arrival, we discovered that the site they had given us was barely big enough for even 1 average-size tent, much less 2. There were 3 tiny campsites all crammed together, and there were only 2 fire pits and 2 picnic tables between those, so I'm not sure how that was supposed to work. We were forced to reserve another site just to have enough room to put up our 2 tents, and even then it was a tight squeeze. Many of the fire pits were basically in the road, and all of the sites were just gravel. That would have been bad enough, but then what seemed like 50 people moved into the three sites next to us, and they stayed up all night drinking! Even the kids were up until at least 3:00. There is apparently no quiet policy or at least no enforcement of one. We asked our neighbors at 2:30 and at 4:00 (yes, a.m.!) to please be quiet, to no avail. We got approximately 3 hours of sleep for the night, so the next morning we asked for our money back for the second night and we left early. Luckily, the manager was very nice, and even gave us $10 extra back because of our bad experience. I appreciated the customer service, but we will not be returning, or recommending this campground to anyone. read more

We stayed here for a week. We had our own private little campsite next to the creek which was great. The place was not maintained very well at all. Weeds were super tall, bathrooms really dirty,(paper towel dispenser and toilet paper holders broken). Office hours were terrible 8:30-9:30 and 4-6. We needed change a couple times and had to go to town since the store was closed. Good location and campsite. We would go again but would like it if things were maintained better. read more
