Elisabeth's Café is a nice place to relax and chill with you're friends or family around a cup of coffee or tea and a piece of pie. Moreover, it's located in the Vieux Lille. The shop is really cute and well decorated. There is a bunch of plants, it seems more personalized than the chains you can find in the street (Nothing Hill Coffee, Starbucks...) This is my across-the-street go-to location for scones, although it's pretty rare that I get scones these days. I was there the day they opened up and was able to chat it up with the young half English/half French owner about how Elisabeth's came to be (this is their second location after his English mother's successful one in Le Touquet) and his plans for the future of the chain. As far as I know this is the only place to get a real English breakfast in Lille, and certainly the only place to get meat pies. If they could implement a coffee service that was on par with Notting Hill (which is across the street) then I think they'd really be thriving -- though I'm not sure they could realistically implement such a thing. As far as atmosphere and a place to hang out, there are other places in the city I'd recommend which are less tight-quartered. One of my favorite places to go if I'm in the area and have some time to kill between classes! Naturally, there's a large selection of tea. I try to choose a new one each time and I've yet to be disappointed. The baked goods are for the most part typically British and all are delightful looking! I've tried a scone and some shortbread and was pleased with both. There are also a few hot plates offered - soups, little pies, etc - which I haven't yet had the opportunity to try. The carrot cake is supposed to be particularly good! The upstairs area is cozy with a few comfortable chairs, couches and tables. When there's not too many people it's the perfect place to relax and read a good book. The downside is that such a small space can become easily crowded and thus loses some of its charm. Amazing place, very friendly stuff, and definitely a place worth visiting when a Lille!! Good coffee (although it could be better), the tea was very good as well, and we also tried a chocolate brownie which (as everything else) looked totally delicious and home made, but in the end disappointed a bit. I'm very happy to go again though to try every dessert and sandwich on the menu!!! read more
