Review of Dr. Elizabeth West - MemorialCare Long Beach, Labor & Delivery My daughter was born in December of 2022 and I am just now, 2.5 years later, able to put into writing the harm Dr. Elizabeth West caused me during my labor and birth. Much like sexual assault, the effects of birth trauma can be so severe that it takes victims a long time to process and come forward. This was one of the most defining, destabilizing, and traumatic events of my life--and the time it's taken me to speak on it reflects the depth of that harm. Despite clearly communicating my birth preferences--including a hands-off labor & delivery due to my history of sexual assault and domestic violence--Dr. West repeatedly violated my consent during labor, most notably by performing extremely aggressive manual vaginal dilation with both of her hands as I told her to stop. This caused severe pain, tissue damage, and long-term trauma. The most devastating moment was the birth itself, where I felt dehumanized and powerless. Rather than honoring my choices or body, Dr. West inserted herself aggressively into the moment, overriding my and my partner's requests. Not only did she continue with the vaginal stretching (what she wrote in as "perennial support" in my medical records), but she also continued to forcefully pull my daughter out by her head after my partner clearer told her to take her hands off of our daughter, on the last pull she scoffed and looked up at him and said "well thats how you deliver a baby." I left that birth feeling violated, broken, and silenced--robbed of what should have been a beautiful experience. I also experienced coercion and fear-based tactics, such as being pressured to undergo interventions I explicitly declined. Dr. West provided ultimatums instead of options, ignored my requests, dismissed my concerns, and treated me with hostility. When my epidurals failed, I received no compassion or assistance from her, only cold indifference. When I wouldn't consent to AROM, she tried to coerce me into it by saying I needed more Pitocin but she couldn't do that without internal monitoring. When we affirmed that we were declining, she had the nurses raise my Pitocin without consent yet again. Near the end, she gave me an ultimatum: AROM, C-Section (while still arguing that my epidural was working fine when it had completely failed for the second time) or AMA paperwork. We went with AROM and she laughed, saying "well, you have about an 8% chance of vaginal but we'll see." There was absolutely no reason or evidence suggesting that percentage, and I did in fact vaginally deliver 1.5 hours later. I am thankful for my partner, doula and the two nurses who said she was completely out line, and false in that feedback, and that I was fully capable of doing this and that they all believed in me. If it wasn't for them, I don't know what would have happened due to my mental state at this point and the completely negligence and arrogance of Dr. West. It took over a year of pelvic floor therapy, trauma counseling, and postpartum recovery to begin healing from what happened. What's most upsetting is that it was avoidable--had my care been grounded in empathy, consent, and trauma-informed practices. As a birth worker now myself, I've sadly witnessed Dr. West use the same coercive, pressuring and apathetic tactics with other clients. Her approach reflects a pattern that prioritizes control over care. I urge any birthing person seeking respectful, collaborative care to be cautious. Birth should be empowering, not traumatic - regardless of the factors (pathology, need for c-section, interventions, change in plans, etc). I guess, I wrote too soon based on my first meeting with the doctor. My second meeting was way too weird. We had a different birth plan, we were flexible to have our baby delivery either with our primary OB or here at the practice depending on my health and the situation. We liked a few of the doctors that we met at the LB Memorial care but we didn't like all of them. We didn't feel confident because we were not seen by the same doctor every single time. Their practice is different with a team of doctors, we were not comfortable with it. We wanted to develop a rapport, a relationship with 1-2 doctors and chalk out our birth plan accordingly. Everyone is different and everyone's preferences are different. We didn't find their team practice wrong or anything of that sort, we just couldn't fit into their way of practice, it wasn't for us. Nobody asked us about our birth plan so we never shared, it wasn't meant to deceive anyone. I have a very good insurance plan and my insurance was covering all the expenses for both the LB memorial care and as well as our primary OB, because we never used the same service twice, we didn't get tested for the same thing more than once at any given place. We were well aware of our situation and kept our primary OB informed of everything. We were able to share the test results from the memorial care's myChart system, so we thought everything was going well. And, like I mentioned we wanted to have two options. It was our first baby and we were not confident enough to have our baby delivered by just any one from their team, which we would have never known which doctor was going to be around until the time of delivery! We shared our birth plan and when Dr. West came to know of our plan of delivering with our primary OB preferably, she completely flipped out, was very offended and the tone was not nice at all! I was literally shocked at the experience of the visit, she didn't even care to see me and all she cared was why did we have a different birth plan. I was given the whole set of myChart printouts of nearly 300 pages which I didn't ask for (I felt as if - here is your stuff, just take and leave!). I don't think that I will be ever going back to this team ever again. They are nice as long as everything is okay according to them and I definitely do not wanted to be treated this way again. I mean, if there was some disconnect or a communication gap, I would have appreciated if I was explained properly with a proper tone. Not as if I was being scolded or punished. Yes, I agree that some of Dr. West's concerns were correct and some were just plain excuses. Whatever the case, the tone of communication was just not professional at all. Possible 4 weeks in first time pregnancy. Saw doctor has availability online and booked appointment through Mychart under "New Pregnancy". I just want to make sure I am actually pregnant. I am completely inexperienced in being pregnant and have zero idea what I should do. Figured at least first make sure the home test is accurate and isn't lying to me. Got a voicemail in the morning saying I need to call back because they have a question for me. Called back several minutes later, got a different person telling me the doctor doesn't see 4 week pregnant women, and I need to come back at 7 to 9 weeks. But the doctor won't be available when I will be 7 or 9 weeks. I said ok I just want to make sure I am pregnant for now. Got told the original person who called me is away and need to have her call me back later. I was like ok but I have a meeting soon can you please call either before 8 or after 9? Sure. Got a call right at 8:04 smack dab in the middle of my meeting, had no choice but to reject the call. Called back after 9, different person again, but didn't have to wait for another call back this time and was just out right told the doctor doesn't see 4 week pregnancies unless I have complications. Went over the whole just wanting to make sure I am pregnant first conversation, but also expressed my concern when the time comes I am 7 weeks or 9 weeks pregnant the doctor still won't have time to see me. Was told I could have a nurse see me instead of the doctor. Ok why do I need a doctor at all then? I am sorry this ignorant inexperienced person wasted your high and mighty doctor's time. And I am sorry for wasting both yours and my time making an appointment online. Doctor has time today but I am obviously not qualified to be seen by this doctor. read more

I am normally a patient of Dr Spielvogel, who I love, but he was not available when I spontaneously went into labor and arrived at the hospital two weeks before my due date. Dr west was on call and I knew from previous interactions that I didn't want her as my Dr for my delivery, however things were moving too quickly and I was given no choice. She spoke down to me during the pushing phase of my delivery, as if I didn't know what I was doing or it wasn't good enough. The fact that I didn't lose my cool on her is a miracle as I was just so focused on getting through the pain as it was an all natural delivery. The nurses in the room were even stunned at her attitude with me and the comments she was making. I had the best birth possible with the worst Dr. I would not recommend her to anyone. I even had to return to L&D to have my stitches redone as they came undone from her poor attention to detail. She made it seem like she didn't want to be there at all. To be honest, I never thought anyone could live up to the way people talked about her. It truly seemed like everyone was talking about their best friend, or most loved family member. First of all, the facility of Dr. West's medical office is clean and modern. The staff at the front desk and the medical assistants were very friendly and provided excellent service. Dr. West practiced excellent communication, explained every step of the way, did a thorough exam, and reviewed and discussed my history in detail. Dr. West was also very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. Most importantly, my teenage daughter who went for her first well woman visit really liked Dr. West and her medical assistant. Already familiar with the sparkling clean medical office facility on Schaufele and its staff, I was so happy when I came across Dr. West's stellar reviews --- and was extra pleased when the nurse in my GP's office sang her praises. I finally met Dr. West in person last week for my first annual appt and could not be more thrilled with having found her! Doctor West was the attending physician for my birthing client yesterday. She has the most wonderful, caring, thoughtful, wise, gentle bedside manner. She allowed my client space and freedom to birth the way she desired. She even allowed her to choose a comfortable position of choice to birth in. Dr West deserves every star she has and much more..she is compassionate, kind, takes her time with you without ever making you feel rushed and very very thorough in her examination. I went to her because my sister was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer..she in medically ordered a Ca 125 test and a transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound. She got my results by the morning and called me right away with my results that I have a mass on my ovaries and to see a gynecologic oncologist to have this removed and biopsied to be on the safe side since my sister has cancer. I originally found her for my sister before she was diagnosed with cancer..but I took her appt once we knew my sister had cancer and needed to see an oncologist instead..We absolutely love her and her great bedside manner which made a huge difference for us given the situation at hand and she will be my gyno for life!!! read more

I am so happy to have found Dr. West. She is kind, patient and attentive. As a new patient, she took the time to get to know me and my history. I never felt rushed, and all my questions were answered. The facility is clean and modern. The check-in staff member was polite and efficient, and the medical assistant was very sweet and helpful. While we chatted, she helped me set up my myChart account so I could have access to my records, make appointments and communicate with the doctor via the myChart app. An added bonus...there is plenty of parking for this new facility.
