Our whole family trains at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Schertz--my wife and I, our teenage son, and our…read more10-year-old daughter--and we all really enjoy being part of this gym. One of the things we appreciate most is the structured curriculum. The techniques build on each other, making it easy to follow and understand your progression. The coaches are patient, professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about their students. They take the time to explain techniques clearly and point out the small details that make a big difference. You can tell they care about teaching the technique correctly rather than simply going through the motions. Safety is also a top priority, which is extremely important to us, especially with our kids training here. The coaches emphasize training in a controlled and responsible way while still making classes challenging and enjoyable. Another thing that really stands out is the community. The coaches have created a positive, welcoming, and respectful environment for both kids and adults. Everyone is there to learn, improve, and help each other get better. Finding a gym where our entire family enjoys training together has been a great experience. We highly recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu Schertz to anyone looking for a safe, structured, and family-friendly place to learn Jiu Jitsu.

First I'd like to address Jane P.'s review. My kids have been going to SA Kids Karate for years so…read moreI asked them about some of the things mentioned: have you ever shared a seat belt? Have you had to stare at the wall during quiet time? I know for sure the kids get yelled at ... it's kinda hard to run a karate class with physical activity without yelling. But for the other things ... all 3 of my kids said no. The vans are beat up though. I offer grace because I know the chip shortage has messed up the car / van market. If you're a business that has budgeted for used vans but the pandemic has inflated prices to new van prices then you have to wait to upgrade your vans. They did upgrade one though and the others are really starting to nickle and dime. But I can't criticize a small business owner for remaining within their budget. That stated ... on to the review that I want to write. My kids have been going for 9 ish years. Off and on... I've learned just as much as a parent as my kids have. I actually have favorite speeches from the owner and chief instructor: Kyoshi Dan "There's this myth out there that people will often rise to the occasion. That when great things are demanded of them they miraculously execute things flawlessly. The Japanese have a saying... 'you sink to your level of preparation.' That's why blackbelt tests are so tough... they want to make sure that if you're exhausted and broken down: do you still have technique? Can you remain in control? Do you lose part of yourself when pushed to the brink?" I think of that often: 'You rarely rise to the occasion... more likely you will sink to your level of preparedness' The other speech is: "A blackbelt is just a white belt that never quit ... kids get into karate but a few years into it they want more free time may play a few more video games, relax, try another sport. Parents tell me all the time: 'I don't want to make them do what he / she doesn't want to do...'. It's that same parent that came to me that said: 'I want them to learn... discipline.' So if you want them to learn discipline... teach them that there are some things that are not 'ok' to quit. Teach them the importance of finishing what they started. Teach them that there are certain things that they have to follow through." My kids haven't been allowed to quit since . So... I do take lessons with my kids. At the time we signed up they had a family special. My father took martial arts with me when I was little and I have fond memories of us going and getting Aguas frescas after. I wanted my kids to have that same memory. The business model is cool... once you join they lock in your rate. They only raise rates on new enrollees. If you are offered lifetime / paid in full membership I highly recommend it. It has saved me a bunch of money and gotten my kids access to things we probably wouldn't have done otherwise. I think if you are fortunate enough to be offered it that the strategy is to accelerate your child's learning by getting them to extra classes so that they can eventually help and teach. Which is the journey that my son is currently on... he wants to get his blackbelt so he can work for Kyoshi during the summer. That's a huge relief for me since 2 years ago he said he wanted to be a YouTuber when he grows up ... so aspiring for a summer job is a big step in the right direction

If you are looking for authentic Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, this is the place. Roland's academy is…read moreaffiliated under Master Pedro Sauer, who teaches Jiu-Jitsu the way it was originally intended to be trained, for self-defense (dealing with strikes on the ground, weapons, etc.), and not only for competition. There are no egos, and everyone is there to help each other get better. Safety is heavily emphasized, and while rolling is intense (as it should be) it is also friendly. Roland is a good teacher who wants to give people the real deal. He also has several high level brown belts who help to teach, as well as a few that will soon be testing for their Black Belt under Master Sauer. There is an established curriculum that is followed, with clear criteria for each belt rank, and the curriculum is worked on frequently in class. If you are looking for BJJ, and are interested in it for all of the reasons that made it popular in the first place, you should check it out.
