I miss this place. Let's go over why I lived there for two years:…read more-----POSITIVES:
1. Management+Staff--the staff is very responsive to your messages, concerns, comments, etc. Not to mention, they have hours every day of the week. (Many other buildings do not have anyone on-site on Sundays.. which is just a pain if you have a concern on a Saturday evening and you have to wait until Monday.) Definitely if you live here, they will be attentive to you. Shout out to Erin, Thania, Abdul, and Tefta who are all wonderful. Compared to other buildings, the staff was there almost the whole time that I was here; they really got to know me, and I do miss them. I rarely had any issues with appliances or the apartment, but the Maintenance staff was also super quick and professional.
2. Green line + Trader Joe's + Lake Street + WHF + Walgreens +City Target--everything is in walk-distance including the green line (and the blue line if you're up for it). I had moved here after living in a different big US city, and because this was close to the green-line, I could still get to West Loop whenever I needed that. However, you never have to worry about groceries or appointments because you are one block from downtown OP.
3. Gym--I run every day. Because OPP has three treadmills, I never had an issue where I didn't have a machine. Most class-A buildings have 2 treadmills in Chicago (not sure why)--if you're a runner, you will never have to worry that you can't get on a machine when you want to. Also the gym is two rooms. There are plenty of weight-machines and free-weights. Also there is another giant gym one block away in case you want even more gym time. I also appreciated that the gym was kept at a reasonable temperature. Other buildings tend to leave the gym-room in the seventies or upper seventies, and this really makes it uncomfortable.
4. Three elevators and a freight elevator--I have lived other places; most seem to have two elevators. At OPP, they are pretty fast, and it's easy to move items in and out.
5. Parking--You park in the attached parking-garage. I always felt like my car was secure, and while other neighbors had to worry about parking downtown when going to the theatre, errands, or eating at restaurants, it's nice that you're just always parked there. There are hundreds of spots too so you don't have to worry about driving around looking for a spot.
6. Walk-in closet in a studio--Having since moved out (due to job-stuff), I no longer have a walk-in closet at my new studio... and it's really annoying. If you have a lot of clothes or there's two of you moving-in, then you'll always have more than enough space with the walk-in closet.
7. Pet-friendly--They only charge a lump-sum fee for your pet--other corporations charge a pet-rent per month AND a pet-fee which is semi-insulting. It's nice that OPP isn't trying to gauge anyone for having a pet.
8. Roof-top/view--The roof is a nice green space, and even from my apartment, I could always see fireworks on the 4th of July.
9. Nearby Restaurants--I had moved back from the west coast so I am used to innovative, fresh restaurants. OPP is pretty close to Citrine, The Heritage, and MUNCH (for whenever your vegan friends come to visit). You should definitely go to Citrine & The Heritage whenever you need a special night out.
10. Oak Park as a whole--Similar to Evanston, OP is a very vibrant and lively community. People actually leave their houses/apartments and go out and enjoy downtown OP (unlike other sleepy suburbs). There were many opportunities to get involved with groups--such as those related to social-justice, politics, faith, recreation, etc. There is a wonderful farmers market, several annual festivals, Thursday Night Out, etc.
---------Things to Keep in Mind:
1. Noise outside--This doesn't counteract the benefits of living above TJ's, but the semi-truck arrives at 4:34 am. I know that it does because that's when I just set my alarm for because it's loud. Now, I'd still rather have TJ's than not, but they should fight this. In Park Ridge, the apartments above TJ's brought up the noise and now the trucks don't arrive until 7 am to allow residents the ability to sleep. Also, car-alarms are always going off in the TJ parking-lot. Always.
2. Noise inside--In the last year the building, especially the halls, became pretty loud. If you don't mind this, then you'll be fine.
3. Harlem x Lake--A lot of people hate this intersection. I became used to it.
4. Parking for guests--There is no guest parking or nearby affordable street parking. If you are dating someone, it adds up really quickly.
5. The rent is as high as the new buildings in OP, but this is not a new building. OPP is a great place to live, but if they want to attract people, they need to be a few hundred dollars below them.
I ALREADY MISS THIS PLACE, and I might have to move back to the gym/building depending on my job. Thanks, OPP
