At the appt I was very comfortable and we talked a bit about how she started doing henna when she was younger as it is part of her culture. I picked a photo from off her profile and asked to have it recreated. I decided to use jagua (which is till all natural plant but a different substance altogether than henna- jagua is NOT black henna) because I am darker and prefer the jagua stain on my skin color. She told me I should get the henna done the day before my birthday so it can look its best on my special day and quoted me a VERY reasonable price. Fatema is amazing! She's super fast, informative and sweet. She did my design in less than 10 minutes and explained to me how henna works. Apparently your body temperature has a lot to do with the final result. She made me put on my coat and (tons) of layers before she started. And when she was done, she put lemon juice all over it so it can come out bright orange. Fatema even let me sit in her home for nearly 20 minutes to let the paste dry -- and offered me grapes! Definitely going back to her again and I've already recommended her to a friend of mine who's marrying a Guyanese man in the near future.

She told me 6pm was available for today 3/19 and I asked her if she had anything earlier in the day. I asked for 3pm and she told me 4pm so I took the appointment. We spoke twice about what kind of henna tattoo, exchanged text messages about it and then she emailed me confirmation of the date and time after I paid her a deposit of $30. My daughter and I got to the city from NJ at noon and I paid for a parking garage. We had lunch and hung around the city prior to the appointment. 45 minutes before the appointment-at 3:15-Monika called me and said that she had a family emergency and would not make it into the city until at least 6pm because she didn't have a way to get home. I didn't want to get upset as she said it was a family emergency but I also thought that if she didn't have a way to get home she may be later than 6:00 which meant that I would have to pay $30 an hour in overage fees for parking which I wasn't going to do. I asked for a refund which she immediately sent me on Venmo. Of course my daughter was extremely upset. She was getting the henna tattoo down her back because she had a backless prom dress (which Monika knew) and had been looking forward to this for weeks. Then my daughter saw on IG Monika posted pictures of herself at a bridal shower from that day! One-very rude to do this to us so last minute and two-don't post pics on IG if you're going to lie. I wish she would have just said that she couldn't give us an earlier appointment than 6 in the first place. A very shoddy way to run your business especially in this day and age. Very disappointed.

[Disappointing Experience - Not Recommended for Brides] When…read moremy wife hired Gurdeep for her bridal makeup, she was incredibly excited and had high hopes. However, as we got closer to the wedding day, we started seeing red flags. First, Gurdeep was unwilling to travel to my wife's house in New Jersey, even though our wedding was also in New Jersey. She insisted my wife come to New York instead, which was unreasonable. When she finally agreed to travel, she charged an absurd amount for what was only a 30-minute drive. On the wedding day, my wife was disappointed with the way Gurdeep handled her makeup. Instead of listening to her preferences, she insisted on a dramatic smokey eye and dark lips--something my wife never wanted. Being an introvert, my wife didn't push back at the time, trusting Gurdeep's expertise. Unfortunately, when we saw each other for the first look, my wife could immediately tell from my reaction that the makeup was a huge mistake. It was poorly blended and did not suit a traditional Sikh bridal look at all. Even when we received our wedding photos, we begged the photographers to fix the makeup in post-production, but there was only so much they could do. We were left deeply disappointed that such an important part of our wedding day was mishandled. Brides, please do your research before booking! Your wedding day is too special to take risks with someone who won't respect your vision.
