Preston and his helper completed a repair of the outflow pipe and installed a valve; so that we have had no further problems with it. He advised we continue preventative maintenance because we have a lot of trees and the roots get in the drains. When I first called Preston, he was a bit busy due to the holiday season. I had no emergency, so I was able to wait. I could have hired another plumber, but I completely trust Preston to the recommended maintenance work that is required to prevent any future problem. Trust is very important because most quality plumbers with camera equipment charge about the same amount for a house call + time. However, some will take a lot more time to do the same job. He also knows the system in the house, so I waited until he was available. This year we only needed a fairly routine removal of roots blocking the drainage line. Preston and his assistant Valentin were quick and efficient. First diagnosing the location of potential problems and then working hard to remove some large clumps of roots that were blocking the inflow and also the outflow. I was very pleased to see the roots they removed and I look forward to trouble free drainage during an upcoming rainy spring. Thanks Preston and Valentin.

They seemed okay but we noticed, for one, that fire extinguishers were deemed 'expired' and in need of replacement, when upon closer inspection, we could see that they weren't. Could be a mistake? Another time they reported some ball bearing in need of replacement in the mechanical room. I literally overheard the two guys arguing about who's fault it was and how to handle it and I walked in on them. They said they had been talking about another job but whether it was our building or another building, it seemed odd. We got that fixed but it took months. So eventually, after several other small incidents mounted, nothing major, I switched companies to a smaller company who came in and walked me through the inspection in a very transparent and educational way. I immediately could see the difference and the report was thorough and easy to follow. We recently had an urgent issue come up with one of our air compressed lines and despite best intentions, our new smaller Fire Safety Company didn't have a tech available to help asap. So I called Fairlane back. They at least knew the building and I needed their help. After some back and forth, they finally came back to me and said they could not help since we had terminated their service. Since they had not done the last inspection, whether the issue had to do with anything that was inspected or not, they would not come out for this issue. They said it's an industry-wide protocol not to help with urgent issues like this, if the building was inspected by another company. I called my smaller company who couldn't believe it. Apparently it's standard for other companies to jump in when another company can't make it. I called another company, BarTec, and they said they had never heard of such a policy and would be happy to help right away. Even though this could have been an opportunity for Fairlane to win our business back, it instead just confirmed we had made the right decision to leave.

While cleaning the furnace they said they had to replace the furnace igniter and flame sensor. For the furnace ignitor they charged $349 and the flame sensor $189. On line you can see a furnace ignitor is $85 and the flame sensor is $13. So, I was charged $538 for parts valued at about $100 plus the furnace cleaning! When I complained about the high costs they gave me $100 back. I asked that they refund another $100 but they would not. My furnace was running fine before they worked on it and is working just the same now. So, it is hard to judge the quality of their work. I know they ripped me off with way too high prices for the parts. So, I would say this company has very poor ethics, don't let them into your home. They are just looking to take advantage of their customers, especially unsuspecting seniors.
