Crab cakes
Karlyn W.

Artfully plated and delicious West African, Caribbean, Soul food fusion restaurant in the heart of downtown. Street parking. Open for lunch starting at 12p. Fresh juices made in house. Flavorful, dairy free, low salt entrees. I recommend the crab cakes and shrimp attieke. If you're lucky you can meet the chef! I cannot wait to go back. This restaurant is phenomenal. We had several dishes but were only able to take pictures of two of them because the food looked so good that we couldn't wait to eat it. Each is crafted with lots of art and detail but in the flavor combinations and plating. There are lots of vegan options but there are also meat and seafood dishes. The lamb was perfectly cooked. Most of what would contain dairy uses vegan ingredients so if you have a dairy allergy you can enjoy almost any dish and still get to eat a dish that also has meat or fish in it. And of course if you are vegan, this is an amazing spot with mainly options including their desserts which are mostly vegan.

Strawberry sorbet was so flavorful!

In Richmond for business and this was very close to the hotel. What an amazing gift that turned out to be! Every thing we ordered, Brussels sprouts, lamb, shrimp, every bite was more amazing than the one before. I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I ever had ... anywhere. My only regret is that I don't get to Richmond more often!

Salmon with carrots and jollof rice with the Purple Mist to drink.

The salmon, jollof rice, and carrots were all cooked to perfection. Food came out hot and was a beautiful presentation. We were warmly welcomed by Charles, who made a fabulous Purple Mist mocktail (ginger, pineapple, hibiscus, and lime). Our food was fresh and delivered to our table in a timely manner. This restaurant has been open for about 2 months, has a variety of dairy free, gluten-free, and vegan options as well as traditional West African food. My friend had the seafood mac and cheese that was filled with crab, shrimp, and a lobster tail that melted in our mouths. Chef Theresa, you're gifted! Best wishes in your success.

Great food! The meal was great and perfectly seasoned. I Enjoyed the atmosphere! Would definitely come back:)

Great food great atmosphere would definitely come back again. We had mac and cheese with the lamb chops. Chef Headen great job!

From the moment you walk into Piri Piri Chicken, you can feel how warm and welcoming the atmosphere is. It really makes you want to stay and enjoy your meal. The food is honestly amazing. Everything is flavorful and cooked perfectly, but I highly recommend the EL Rey plate. It is a must try. On top of that, the prices are super affordable, which makes the experience even better. Definitely a spot I will be coming back to every time I am in town!

We honestly have no idea what everything else on the menu is like, because we always get the half chicken with beans, rice and pico, and the delicious jalapeño corn muffins. The chicken is always super tender; the sauce they cover it with is so delicious; the skin is always the perfect amount of cooked and packed with flavor. They have a very spicy sauce that my partner loves, and I always get the orange sauce. There are others! The drink selection is quite good, with a ton of variety. They even had the seriously-rare grapefruit Jarritos the last time I was there. It's my favorite, but for some reason nobody ever has it! Thank you all for such good food and your kindness over the years!

I haven't had African cuisine in a while, but I stopped by here and ordered fufu with egusi soup…read moreand beef. It was really good. The fufu was nice, and the egusi had a bit of spice but wasn't overly spicy. **I ordered my food to go because there was a note on the counter saying there was about a $3 to $4 fee to eat inside using their plates and cutlery.

I just stopped by here on a whim and...wow…read more I've been wanting to try peanut soup for some time. I was looking at Virginia style (colonial style I guess), usually served around williamsburg, but I don't live near there so it was on the back burner and I never got around to it. I was looking for another business and accidentally pulled into this place. Right in front of me was a sign for peanut soup -- and they were still open! I saw the other menu items and realized it appeared to be an African restaurant. Apparently the type of peanut soup I was looking for was derived from the west African version hundreds of years ago -- obviously the west African version has more spice and pizazz and usually includes a meat. So I ordered it to go. And...wow. I had to let it cool for a few because it was super hot. Once it had cooled just a bit I opened it -- you could immediately smell the peanut base -- it was lovely. It was wonderfully spiced and flavored and fairly savory -- it had a mild kick but I wouldn't call it spicy, and it had a rich and hearty flavor. You get a choice of meat and I chose goat. It was super good! I'm pretty sure I got part of the foot/hoof, and the tendon meat around it, which is gelatinous and almost fatty; it absorbs the flavor of the broth very well. And the red meat parts were extremely flavorful and had the wonderful "gamey" flavor that good goat meat has. Like most goat meat in stews it had bone, but it didn't have little sharp pieces like you sometimes get in biryani or other dishes with chunks of goat. Anyways, it was super good. I still want to try the other type of peanut soup, but I am not sure it can even compare to the African version it's based off of -- less spices and all. It was an impulsive move to try it, and an accident I even ended up there -- but it will be somewhere I absolutely go again, maybe next time I'll stay in and eat and bring my husband. There was also a super dramatic movie playing on the big TV while I was waiting for my food. I wish I knew what happened, but I didn't want to hang out like a weirdo when they were about to close and I ordered to go.

Went here on a Saturday night because I was craving something filling and flavorful; the place…read morething that came to mind was Yendidi. I tried them before a long time ago and haven't had them recently, so I was really anticipating having them again. The ordering process was quick and easy, we used their computer screens to put our orders in. Not too bad of a wait for our food. The staff were very communicative on our food status while we were waiting, which I appreciated. My order included an Afro pie (7.5/10), I absolutely loved the sauce it came with, but I do feel like the meat inside and pie itself was dry. Sautéed green beans (10/10). Chicken Egusi soup w/ pounded yam (9/10), the flavors were amazing! I loved how savory it was; however, I do believe they switched the spice level of my soup with my sisters because I asked for none-little spice, yet my soup tasted like it was their highest spice level !! I had to keep taking breaks while eating because while it did taste really good, it was also so so spicy! I really did enjoy my meal, despite receiving the wrong spice level in my Egusi soup. I will def return again soon. My overall rate of experience : 8.6/10

It's the kind of place where you walk in thinking, "Oh nice," and walk out Googling how to recreate the lighting in your own living room. Cozy without being cramped. Trendy without making me feel like my shoes were judged. The food? Listen. I would like to publicly apologize to my taste buds for ever doubting them. Every bite tasted like the chef stood over the plate whispering, "You deserve this." Bold flavors, perfectly cooked, plated like it was about to audition for a food magazine. Now why four stars instead of five? Because I have trust issues. And also because the food came out so good I now have unrealistic expectations for every other meal I will ever eat. That feels like a burden I wasn't prepared to carry. Service was friendly, attentive, and didn't once make me feel bad for asking, "What's that?" three separate times. Water refills were prompt. Smiles were genuine. No one hovered. No one disappeared into the void. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I pretend I discovered it before it was cool? Also yes. Four stars. Only because if I give five, they might get too powerful.
