I was looking at Virginia style (colonial style I guess), usually served around williamsburg, but I don't live near there so it was on the back burner and I never got around to it. I was looking for another business and accidentally pulled into this place. Right in front of me was a sign for peanut soup -- and they were still open! I saw the other menu items and realized it appeared to be an African restaurant. Apparently the type of peanut soup I was looking for was derived from the west African version hundreds of years ago -- obviously the west African version has more spice and pizazz and usually includes a meat. So I ordered it to go. And...wow. I had to let it cool for a few because it was super hot. Once it had cooled just a bit I opened it -- you could immediately smell the peanut base -- it was lovely. It was wonderfully spiced and flavored and fairly savory -- it had a mild kick but I wouldn't call it spicy, and it had a rich and hearty flavor. You get a choice of meat and I chose goat. It was super good! I'm pretty sure I got part of the foot/hoof, and the tendon meat around it, which is gelatinous and almost fatty; it absorbs the flavor of the broth very well. And the red meat parts were extremely flavorful and had the wonderful "gamey" flavor that good goat meat has. Like most goat meat in stews it had bone, but it didn't have little sharp pieces like you sometimes get in biryani or other dishes with chunks of goat. Anyways, it was super good. I still want to try the other type of peanut soup, but I am not sure it can even compare to the African version it's based off of -- less spices and all. It was an impulsive move to try it, and an accident I even ended up there -- but it will be somewhere I absolutely go again, maybe next time I'll stay in and eat and bring my husband.
