It's a nice size hero and it use to come with 3 breakfast sausages. Now they only put 2 and for a hero, I'm biting into too much bread. They added a beer section. When they first opened, they only had soda, milk and juices. They also carry a 6 pack of Porkslap Pale Ale ($10). I've only read about that pale ale online, haven't tried it yet and was surprised to see it in this store of all places. As for the deli, their cold cut counter is really small. It's not like a butcher shop counter or ones you see in a supermarket. There's only a few types of boars head meats, cheeses, and some of their homemade salads and wraps. They sell a few organic stuff but there's still a lot of other little junk. It's a very clean and organized deli. I just wished they didn't cheap out on their breakfast sandwiches.

Give me some Earth tones!" It's well-lit and nicely-spaced. I happen to live right down Leonard Street so this is my go-to bodega. This is practically my second home. The beverage selection is always up-to-par. I'm usually heading straight to the beer case when I walk in (sometimes in my pajama pants with the skiing penguins on them if you're lucky to catch me). They keep it nicely-stocked with a number of domestic and imported brands and the occasional seasonal brew. And the employees are nice. One time, I was 25 cents short on some eggs and they let me slide. I guess it's because I'm always in there. I don't know any of their names and that's okay. I can't offer any insight into the deli counter because I rarely buy bodega sandwiches. Bagelsmith and Hana are right up the block so I'll head there if I want something between some bread. Otherwise, it's a great bodega. A fine place to pick up quick staples and whatever-the-hell for your apartment. Now who do I talk to about ice cream inventory? I'd give them five stars if they kept Chippy Chips in stock on a regular basis.

Outside, you can pick up the daily newspapers or a magazine -- English and Polish -- or get your cigarettes or lottery tickets through the sliding window. Inside, they don't have much more: Soda, juice, and beer. An ATM. Some snack food items. And polybagged porn magazines. The shop's not that great, but it's extremely convenient -- and the people working there are nice enough. Regardless, there's no reason you'd go here other than it's on your way to the subway.

They have a deli counter in the back that not only slices your cold cuts but they also have a hot bar that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner! Rotisserie chicken. Pre-made wraps, sandwiches and deli salads/meals. Presliced cold cuts ready to grab and go. You'll find a lot of things here that would be hard to find at other places. Biscoff sandwich cookies in 3 flavors! 7UP cupcakes! Prices are comparable to other grocery stores. Their sales are usually very good. Sign up for their points program. You get money off/coupons when you reach a certain amount of points. No reward card necessary! Just punch in your phone number on the special pad every time. They have parking around the corner that also has some table and chair seating on the side. I come here multiple times a week. It has become my go-to supermarket. It may not be the kind of store you a huge haul at, but it's perfect for me!

But the long-time staff are far nicer than at all the big supermarkets, products are generally much less expensive, and I'm convinced there is some sort of portal to a different dimension in this store because Grand Century Market manages to carry just about every dry good under the sun and more, despite its small footprint. A few offerings that jumped out at me on a recent visit: sugar free pineapple cakes; sugar free, vegan oyster sauce; honeysuckle tea; frozen rice cakes for savory stirfries in both the cylindrical cut and oval cut; enormous pomelos for a pittance; salted duck eggs; whole tapioca; sesame seed, walnut, and peanut powders; and all the varieties of silken and pressed, baked tofus that make my heart go pitter patter. There's also a good variety of frozen dumplings and dim sum standards in the freezer section, fresh produce towards the front, and lots of toys and candies, which I'm sure are quite a draw for students from nearby schools. (But by far the most interesting thing that jumped out at me: the adorable house tabby patrolling the joint! :) There's no embedded fishmonger or butcher in this market as there are at HK and NY Supermarkets. No complaints in my book as I prefer to visit specialty vendors for those items anyway and there are a number just a block away to the west of the Grand / Chrystie Street stop.

Grand Century doesn't stand out much but serves as a solid option when all other places have failed. I've learned that calling ahead of time is a simply a waste of time. Calling ahead doesn't guarantee any items as they don't put a hold on anything, it's first come first serve. I already feel bad for most of the English-only speakers, since only the people in the front can speak it but not without some limitation. One redeeming quality of this place is the fact it's relatively close to the B/D subway. That makes this place a good place for a quick shop and go instead of grocery hopping for price comparisons.

It's a pleasant experience here. There's never really a huge crowd, the aisles are spacious, no long lines at check-out and fruits and veggies always look fresh. Thank you Foodtown, for renewing my fate in the sacred institution of weekend grocery shopping.
