Positioned beside the Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace, and formally a part of the University of Adelaide's Music Department, Elder Hall has a life beyond being any sort of stuffy University class room - far from it indeed.
It is said to be one of the best concert halls in Australia and I would have to agree on the basis that I have reviewed theatre, film and music including concerts around the country for thirty years at various festivals and in a variety of venues. Few venues have the clarity of sound that Elder Hall has.
Angel Place in Sydney which is a modern building is the only other example that immediately comes to mind in terms of direct comparison.
Often Elder Hall has lunchtime concerts for free. It is a grand old university hall with some strong historical flavours in the architecture, it dates back to the late 1800's.
Currently it is undergoing some external upgrades, but they will not last long at all and it will go back to the usual program of concerts on a daily basis for office workers or students. This is a bit of an icon inside the Adelaide University and deservedly so. Give Claire Oremland the Elder Hall Concert Manager a call on (08) 8303 5925 if you have any specific questions; she is often the individual curating the concert series' that are free to the public, and can tell you everything you need to know; Claire is a delightful personality and a very helpful person.
The website for the hall provides a link to their free lunchtime concert series, and if you are seeking a little free aural beauty during the week, this is certainly one place to get it. read more
