The Metropole is our local restaurant and eatery. We also had a year membership to the Spa. The…read moreMetropole has so much missed opportunity and it is a shame. I am writing this review as a local resident in hope that the new owners will be looking at how to make this institution better than it currently is. Our most recent experience was to book for some food after work. Can we book before 6pm for food? No. Can we book a specific table? No. Can we eat food in the covered veranda where you can eat during the day? No. Can we get friendly or approachable staff behind the bar? No. They really miss a trick here. We were booked for a lunch for out of town friends coming in to the town for a visit and after our most recent visit we cancelled. This place is the most impersonal and most unfriendly place I have ever visited. I don't really want to take friends and family to this place to be ignored and get fairly average food. The evening restaurant is lovely - the food is great and the staff (who seem nervous and pretty uninformed) are as helpful as they can but need much more training and investment. The staff at the Spa are nice and friendly and the Spa is a lovely space but for the money you would think you could get some help with the gym and how to train. The brasserie only serves food at particular times and absolutely not any other time. How they miss out on trade not doing some brunch/breakfasts or post work stuff - 6pm is pretty late and we just gave up and went home. The bar/brasserie staff are cold and unfriendly, despite whatever efforts we have made over the time we have lived here. You cannot engage in any conversation without the chilliest of response, unlike the friendly and helpful young women on reception. My advice would be to run small bites outside of the very rigid food serving times; train your brasserie staff in customer service; train your restaurant staff in the areas they are clearly underconfident in and turn down or change the dreadful piped music in the brasserie; let people book tables of choice and stop being so impersonal. We are local and would take all our friends, family and occasions to you but we are swiftly changing our minds due to the above reasons. I really hope the new owners bring about some change.

On our arrival the owner, Martin, was immediately on hand to help with luggage and welcome us to the lovely Ty Mawr. We were delighted with our huge suite room, named after previous guest Kiera Knightly, the bedroom with lounge area was dual aspect overlooking the free range chickens and lovely grounds and larger than the whole of our own upstairs house! The luxurious and modern bathroom with a spa bath and rainshower made for a very relaxing pre dinner freshen up. The hotel suite rooms also have their own computers with free broadband, maybe not the speediest of computers but useful for looking up local places and event. Tea tray included delicious home made biscuits, only tiny criticism could be lack of variety with only standard but high quality tea and coffee sachets. An extremely comfortable and huge bed which we were sad to leave. The food, as the previous reviewer of Ty Mawr has written, is delicious and of a very high quality both for dinner and a wonderful breakfast...want more home made bread and toast yum.

The welcome from the owners is like being greeted by friends. I have eaten in their small restaurant on three occasions. On each occasion it was full. The clients include many locals who have, like me, discovered this little gem in the midst of West Wales. The food is sourced locally and the menu reflects what is in season. The rooms are generous and beautifully furnished with modern, lavishly fitted bathrooms. The hotel has 5 star rating and the restaurant has been awarded 1 AA rosette. I highly recommend the restaurant, the food is absolutely superb.

Good comfortable inn on the edge of a small village in the eastern part of the National Park,…read moreconvenient for both the Black Mountains and the main peaks of the Brecon Beacons. The hotel has 10 ensuite bedrooms. We found the rooms clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious but perhaps in need of a little updating. There is not T.V. lounge or rooms solely for the use of hotel guests. However, this is perhaps compensated by a large and comfortable lounge bar. A large T.V. is at one end but this area is seperated off and thus is unobtrusive to those located in the main area. Rev. James and Hancocks H.B. on draft are the pick of the beers. Choice of lagers, wines etc also available. There is also a garden at the back of the hotel for warm and sunny weather. We booked in at the hotel on a half board basis for a whole week and during that time never had a disappointing meal. Good choice of food ranging from local sausages, salmon, half roast duck, crevettes and various steaks. Portions are generous to the point that you may wish to consider a 2 course meal instead of the normal three courses. The fixed price lunchtime menu is excellent value. If available, try the salmon with saffron sauce and Bacardi and Blueberry cheesecake. The website has sample menus. We found the staff friendly and efficient and would happily recommend this inn/hotel to others seeking a reasonably priced establishment in one of the most attractive parts of Wales.
