I immediately noticed a difference between El Tequila Salsa and similar Mexican restaurants when I opened up the menu -- instead of ten pages with hundreds of options -- this menu was considerably compact. All the classics (tacos, enchiladas, burritos tamales, etc. ) were present and accounted for, but the basics and the house specials were clearly curated to a more manageable number of variations. This, I believe, made it possible for the kitchen to put a premium on quality over quantity. I ordered tamales with mole sauce. The tamales were filled with an ample but not excessive amount of protein (as I remember chicken), then properly steamed and smothered with rich, tasty mole. Rice and steamed vegetables completed the plate. I enjoyed every bite. My wife ordered tamales smothered in green chili sauce. She reports that the sauce was as good as any she had on our recent visit to New Mexico. We don't get to Wausau at lunch or dinner time very often, but El Tequila Salsa will definitely be on our list of places to eat. And hopefully I wont be driving next time -- definitely need to able to try their tequila. read more

I went to their new location on County Road NN in Wausau, WI. We had the most fun with an awesome server, Marisol. The food was amazingly fresh and authentic. I had Roy's Fajita with steak. The steak was tender, with lots of mushrooms, onions, spinach and came out on a hot grill which remained warm throughout the meal. The food is full of flavor and very filling. The new restaurant is very modern with color displays of all kinds of Tequila. One wall has a 3-D effect as if you were walking down a Mexican village. The restaurant is very clean, and decorations are fantastic, showing off its authentic environment. We also bought a bottle of Roy's special Tequila and will think of this place as we celebrate happy hour. read more

We ordered a pick up for work with seven items 5 entrées, total about $100. The amount of a lot of corn that was given was less than 1 can corn. They did not tell us until after they ran the credit card that they ran out of beans and rice that is 1/3 of your meal at a Mexican restaurant. This was about 8 o'clock at night so within the hour, they were closing something that they should've notified us that they Did not have a portion of everyone's meal before they charged us and no chips or salsa were given. Went for Cinco de Mayo lunch , new building is beautiful and staff was friendly . Ordered the Fiesta plate! What a mistake! I asked for the grilled chicken and that's about all I got with tortillas. 2 tacos in soft tortillas with grilled chicken. Nothing else in it, no cheese, lettuce or onions even. Burrito was a rolled tortilla with grilled chicken,nothing else inside. Enchilada was the same with red sauce over no cheese. The Chalupa was on fried tortilla with chicken and green sauce and raw onions. Just ok! Rice and beans no flavor . I had the steak quesadilla on my second visit and I had the fajitas with the mushrooms on my first visit and both were excellent! I visited here to and from the airport. I also had the Tres leches and I found it to be delicious as well! Service was great each time! I didn't take any pictures, the food was very appealing and good portions. Food is always good. Always consistent. Our favorite is the Queso Fundido with steak. It's so creamy and flavorful. Even though it's considered an appetizer, it really is enough for my husband and I to split for dinner. Very filling! Try the cheesecake chimichanga which is also pretty yummy. Love this spot! We always stop here when driving through and it never fails to deliver. Everything is fresh and so flavorful. We stopped for Breakfast on a whim, and it was fantastic. I always thought this place was pretty decent but I won't be back for a good long while after today. After reviewing the bill I saw I was charged 9.95 for guacamole and on the menu it's 4.95. We had the Fajitas el Azteca and you get a choice of chicken or steak (16.95). We got chicken but added shrimp too. I obviously expected to pay a bit more for that. I was shocked when I saw they charged $10 extra for the added shrimp. What really gets me about this is they have Fajitas el Trio which has chicken, steak, shrimp, and chorizo, for $18.95. Essentially if I would have ordered the trio and said no steak or chorizo and I would've saved myself $10 and have gotten the exact same plate of food. I brought this up to seemingly the manager and my server and they pointed to a whiteboard behind the cash register that had written price increase of guacamole on it. No where else was it stated, certainly not in the menu. She also argued with me about the fajita situation and was overall very rude. It was all shady. Choice of words should not change your order by $10. Cherry on top is the food was pretty damn bland. read more

Beef taco was served on a flour tortilla, it tasted like a mixture of Taco Bell and school lunch taco.. The drink we ordered was "Latin Love". They didn't display the pricing of it, but when it came out it looked beautiful. However, the tasting of it was disgusting. I've have coconut rum before, and I'm this drink you can't even taste any alcohol. This drink straight up tastes like medicine. It was thick, and the "Bols Raspberry Liquer" was basically grape flavored medicine, nothing raspberry about it. If I wanted to drink medicine, I would've just had some at home. We told our waiter about the drink, he said they can't take it off our receipt, but will give us 50% off.. I only took a small sip, and so did my significant other.. the photo will show how much we drank, before the waiter took it away.. but so we said fine to the 50%, and when the bill came they only took 25% off. We asked why, and waiter said he was allowed to take only 25% off... If that's so, why wouldn't you have communicated with us about the discount. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.. I wouldn't go here again. I would however recommend La Taqueria, El Churro, El Mercadito, and El Mezcal. read more

I travel a lot and you never know what you are gonna get at a Mexican joint. Authentic, Tex Mex or a hot mess. This place was surprisingly great. Had a cool modern vibe but the food was more Authentic Mexican. Had "street tacos" and they were awesome. Fresh onions and cilantro make the difference. If you're at rib mountain state park definitely come here for lunch, only several minutes away. 12-3 lunch specials. Excellent fresh mango margarita! I haven't found a place that makes better mango margaritas and trust me, I have been looking. On the thursday I went they had a BOGO house margarita special, not sure if it was a weekly special or not. I ordered the beef tacos lunch special and a steak fajita plate with four tortillas, refried beans, rice and lettuce for $15 - this was enough to feed two people. Both meals tasted fresh and good. Not disappointed. The only real disappointment were the desserts. Fried ice cream did not taste fresh, the fried part of the ice cream tasted very stale and the serving size was huge. The flan was just okay, nothing special. Just an update... In Houston now and I'm still missing their mango margaritas. I haven't found a place that compares! read more

My husband and I were headed home from a vacation up north and stopped here for lunch. We were traveling with our 15 month old lab and thought this we be a quick in and out place to sit and eat rather than go through a drive thru. As I entered the building a server met me and said we could bring the dog with us if we wanted to eat on the patio. What phenomenal service and attention to customers. She even brought Bosley a huge bowl of ice water. My husband ordered the street tacos off the regular menu and I ordered the fajita nachos off the lunch menu. It took 30 minutes to get our food. We weren't in a hurry since our pup was on the patio with us. The food was fantastic. The bean soup served with the tacos was flavorful and the taco hit the spot. I added a side of guacamole to my nachos and had a hard time finishing all of them. There was a nice balance of meat, beans, and cheese. It all hit the spot. Stopped here on a road trip with high hopes and no idea what to expect - what a wonderful decision it was!! The atmosphere is vibrant and festive, and the facility is very clean. Our waiter was very kind and helpful with recommendations and explanation of the various dishes available. The food was exceptionally flavorful! I especially recommend the molcajete. At the outset let me just say this: if your a Mexican restaurant and you don't serve free chips and salsa, you suck. This place doesn't suck. This place is awesome. Salsa was delicious: just enough spice, good garlic cilantro flavor. Chips were almost perfect: not too salty, served warm. Julian knows what's up. We got there and he immediately brought a basket of chips and two things of salsa to our table. After he left I made a quip about him needing to bring way more for our group of four. He read my mind and appeared with another basket of chips and a salsa bowl for each person at our table. And he kept 'em coming regularly. Bless his heart. Explained all the items we had questions on. Brought more salsa and chips as they got low. Kept our drinks filled. And checked in on us several times. For lunch, the 4 of us tried several items. I had the steak torta. My wife had the enchiladas. And the kids had a chicken tamales and a beef taco. All food was great. Yum. Prices were really fair. My wife and I ate there tonight. The food was very good to excellent. First of all the decorating scheme is crisp, fresh and airy: sort of nouveaux Mexican to coin a term. I had the deep fried tilapia which was tasty. It had a very light breading. Their rice is subtly spiced and very good. The salad was OK. I had a side order of re fried beans. They were creamy with some sort of cheese sprinkled on top: quite tasty and satisfying. I tried some of my wife's fish tacos: very good. We arrived and asked if the kitchen was still open, they said yes and we sat down to have some great food. My coworker had the chicken adobado and I had the steak torta. My food was great, although the bread they used was really authentic for tortas. However the meat and all the ingredients were awesome! Our server was top notch friendly guy.
