    Chicken taco salad
    Ed S.

We've been here a few times and little changes at El Sombrero. It's ok. Not great. My wife's chicken taco salad didn't impress. She found a lot of "liquid" at the bottom of the bowl. As though the lettuce wasn't fully dried. I ordered lunch fajitas. A good sized portion, but still flavorless. I also asked for no sour cream and of course, got sour cream. The waitress got the order right, but failed to check it before serving us. Kudos to El Sombrero for offering black beans. Last time we visited they didn't offer them. Usually, these are served in a separate bowl because they tend to be watery. El Sombrero doesn't share that philosophy, content to let the beans run into the guacamole and lettuce on the plate. And again, I couldn't get any flavor from the beans. Surely there are seasonings that can be used to spice 'em up. There was just one waitress and she didn't appear to be particularly motivated. Pricing is still reasonable and while unremarkable, the food is served promptly and still hot from the kitchen. All the better to wash it down with a cerveza or margarita.

We have been going to El sombrero for years. We always sit with Mario. Mario is so sweet and accommodating. The burrito marino is delicious and huge. We share it and it is more than enough. It is filled with shrimp, grilled onions and peppers, and covered in queso. It also comes with rice. We add ranchero sauce to it to add a bit more flavor. The salsa has nice flavor and a little spice. What is served is medium. They have a hot salsa upon request. It is darker in color and smokier. The margaritas are good; we get 1800 tequila and Mario does a great job making them. They never disappoint.

On point, as always! I love take-out and never used to get my husband to do it, that is, until Covid! Store was clean, limited contact, delicious food and amazing Margarita to-go! Yum! Cheese Dip left over and some leftovers in the fridge! They do take-out food right! And loved seeing some familiar faces! In the warm weather, we love to go with our family and sit on the patio! I almost always get the chimichanga, but my husband LOVES the enchilada sauce(red.)

Great for a quick lunch, and when I say quick, it's like 5 minutes to get your food! They usually tell you to grab a seat, when they come for drink orders they are usually ready for your food order too! They will bring you chips and mild salsa, ask for the hot if you like spicy, it's really good! Lunch menu has lots of options and is very reasonably priced! Two can eat for less than $15! Today my friend order the chicken with cheese and rice and I opted for the #5 lunch which included chile rellano (stuffed pepper with cheese), taco, and beans and rice. It was only $5.79! Service is friendly, and food is fast and hot! Food is pretty good as well. This is my first time in a long time to eat here. But locals love it! Restaurant was clean. They also have drink specials too but since it was lunch I did not order. Plenty of seating inside, there is no outside seating. See pics of food and restaurant.

I've been going here off and on for a few years and I do adore them. We've gotten to know some of the staff and always have such a great time talking and laughing with them. My daughter out of the blue several visits ago said, "Feliz Cumpleanos" to the waiter/manager that was waiting on us because she had learned that term in Spanish. It ended up actually being his birthday! Not kidding. So, ever since then we just tell him happy birthday everytime we see him. The food is great. They always have daily specials posted on their board as you come through the doors so check those out. The cheese dip is the white cheese and it's very reasonable in price. Good beer prices too.

This place was a nice find. I decided to have lunch here because I was very early for a doctor's appointment. At first, I was going to order a take-out and I did. Then, a few minutes after I ordered, I changed my mind and decided to dine in the restaurant. The staff was very accommodating and did not seem annoyed at my change. Actually, they seemed happy that I decided to stay. While yes, as other reviewers have stated, the food is on par with almost any other Mexican restaurant in this region of the United States, the staff seemed much nicer. They were very understanding as I tried to practice my limited Spanish during my lunch experience. The complimentary chips and salsa were nice. The chips were crispy and not oily. The salsa was a little spicy without making me sweat. My sweet tea was just about perfect. It was not syrupy-sweet. It was a bit sweeter than unsweetened teas, but not so sweet that you need an insulin shot after drinking it. I ordered the huevos con chorizo with beans and rice. This dish was really nice because it was not a greasy as in some other Mexican restaurants. There were a few TVs and many Mexican-themed paraphernalia on the walls. I really enjoyed lunch here and will return again when I am in the area.

This is hands down the best mom and pop Mexican restaurant in Jeffersonville. I might be biased, but their food is always fresh and on point! The issues I have are the major difference in how their service is run, the gentlemen are the friendliest, the ladies are not friendly at all.. I find this sad, because bad service can eventually kill even the best restaurants. You can almost sense a feeling of animosity or maybe obligation from the ladies vs the gents. The men greet you with a welcome amigo everytime, esp the owner and Mario. The ladies teens to be exactly as described in another review. The good food offsets the bad service from the ladies and only adds to the excellent service when any of the gents wait on us. I suspect maybe family dynamics come into play?

Okay. Originally i gave them 5 stars because the man was very very patient with me when taking my carry out order. I get it home. Ordered alot of food. My man does not like much mexican food but i know he likes chicken burritos. So i ordered #13. My man said he didnt like it. I said dont throw it away and i will eat it. Well...it wasnt chicken at all. It was beef. So now im mad. But too late to take it back. I havent been there in awile but i might have to take the trip over the bridge to Bandidos to get my food and know it is done correctly. So my review is to always check your order! Even if you have to cut into it while you are there.

I wish I could join the chorus of 4 and 5 star reviews. Looking for a restaurant with atmosphere?…read more You won't find it here. My first warning was the decrepit sign over the door in a dilapidated strip center. But, as the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover." The food was good. Not great. My usual order is fajitas, this time a chicken, steak, and chicken combo. The plate was served sizzling. Served with 3 small tortillas and the usual fixin's. El Mexicano doesn't serve any beans other than refried, so, no option for black beans, pinto or borracho. The shrimp in the dish were perfect, the chicken was dried out and there were about 6 little strips of steak. The grilled onions and peppers were very good. My wife's shrimp dish was very salty. She prefers the interpretation of Shrimp Mexicana at others Mexican restaurants. And for good measure, because we asked for some lime to squeeze on the shrimp and they tacked on $2 to the bill. But what really resulted in my barely average review was the cleanliness of El Mexicano; or rather, the lack of it. You'll notice a yellow bucket that hangs on the wall in the dining room, yes, in full sight of diners. I witnessed a server drop something on the floor, grab a cloth from the bucket and clean the floor. Then, she returned the cleaning cloth to the bucket. Moments later, another server used the same cloth to clean tables! The health department would have a hissy fit if they saw this. Worse, when I mentioned this to the manager, he was indifferent. I know he understood me, he just didn't care. If the manager is so indifferent to such an obvious health hazard, I can't fathom what goes on in the kitchen. El Mexicano is a "one and done" for us.

I'm sitting here scratching my head as why because at best, this is a 3-star place and barely at that. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. I've had much better Mexican food at other places. I ordered the Chori Pollo which is chorizo on top of grilled chicken with cheese and white rice. My order was taken down wrong and I ended being given something entirely different. They did end up making it correct for me. The horchata I ordered was really good and one of the better ones I've had from a place. My server was nice despite taking down my order entirely wrong. The interior is nice. It the music is absolutely too loud and constantly playing so you may need to talk a bit louder than usual if you want to have a conversation with anyone dining with you. I can't see myself returning to this establishment and one that I wouldn't recommend. I had to fight with flies the entire time I was dining which added to the rather displeasing time I was here. The prices for the food isn't too terrible and pretty standard if you've been to most other Mexican restaurants that have a similar menu. Do yourself a favor and find another, much better place for Mexican food than here.

It took us quite a while to find the server to get the error corrected. The complementary chips and salsa were way off. The chips were stale and they switched to a green salsa. Admittedly, a personal preference, but I liked the red better. My wife enjoyed her usual- camarones Mexicano. Served sizzling and perfectly done. I don't recall the mixed fajitas (my usual) as being so greasy. Again, served hot. Lots of peppers, onions, & grilled tomatoes. No jalapeños. I could have asked for some as a side and I'm sure they would accommodate. I also found it odd that La Lupita doesn't offer any beans other than refried. We asked for black beans or pinto or borracho. They're not offered. Yet they were able to serve refried black beans instead of the usual borracho or pinto refried version. Prices, inevitably, were up since our last visit. La Lupita is still a favorite for authentic Mexican food. We just caught them on an off day and it was still way ahead of most Mexican restaurants.

I had told my grandson about the mole I had on our first visit, and he wanted to try it. My wife and I ordered tamales and my grandson ordered the Mole Oaxaqueno. I ordered a Michalada ($10.00). Not long after ordering the manager returned to our table and informed us they were out of tamales. That being the case, my wife ordered the Lunch Chicken Fajita which we were told was on special today. It's normally ($10.99). I ordered Tlayuda, which is basically a Mexican Pizza ($17.00). My wife had asked for a side of the mole sauce. My grandson was served his meal AND an extra plate of Chicken Mole. We all looked at each other like why did he get extra chicken mole. My wife received her Fajita, but no side of the mole sauce. Do you see where this is going? My grandson loved the Chicken Mole. My wife said the Chicken Fajita was bland with no seasonings. She did not like the Fajita. My Tlayuda was huge. However the base was a huge flour tortilla and it was grilled to the point it was like a piece of leather. You couldn't cut it nor chew it. It was terrible. IMO the Tlayuda is not worth $17. I would not order it again. My Michalada was good. So I get my check. My wife's Fajita was not on special we were charged the regular $10.99. The extra plate of Chicken Mole, which was supposed to be a small side bowl of mole sauce was charged as another meal. I did not challenge their misunderstanding of what we wanted because my grandson ate all of it. All in all, we would not reorder most of our meal. This restaurant charges a 4% surcharge for using a credit card, so I took cash to avoid the 4%. When I got my change it was a $5 bill with 14 one dollar bills.
