There are several Mexican restaurants out there that serve up the same general items, offer the same general service and are generally the same in terms of quality. I felt that this place was a little less on the quality side IMO. The red sauce on enchiladas was very bland. I usually love the salsa in these types of Mexi restaurants but didn't care for it as much here. I requested half/half rice & beans but was told they can't do it. I always find that odd since they are both commodity type items and not very expensive to make (although with huge markup). I always end up with 3/4 of the refried beans left on my plate....ugh. The food was bland overall. I wish half stars were an option here because this place was average. read more

Today was our monthly brotherhood lunch. There were almost 20 of us in the party. Chips and salsa arrived quick with drink orders almost immediately after. Food orders were taken shortly after and served pretty quickly. All in all, it was a pretty good meal. I didn't hear any complaints. I had the lunch Chimichanga. Others had taco salad, burrito, fajitas, etc. There was a good lunch crowd. It is a great place for large gatherings. They can easily serve a party of 20+ people. read more

We've been here a few times and little changes at El Sombrero. It's ok. Not great. My wife's chicken taco salad didn't impress. She found a lot of "liquid" at the bottom of the bowl. As though the lettuce wasn't fully dried. I ordered lunch fajitas. A good sized portion, but still flavorless. I also asked for no sour cream and of course, got sour cream. The waitress got the order right, but failed to check it before serving us. Kudos to El Sombrero for offering black beans. Last time we visited they didn't offer them. Usually, these are served in a separate bowl because they tend to be watery. El Sombrero doesn't share that philosophy, content to let the beans run into the guacamole and lettuce on the plate. And again, I couldn't get any flavor from the beans. Surely there are seasonings that can be used to spice 'em up. There was just one waitress and she didn't appear to be particularly motivated. Pricing is still reasonable and while unremarkable, the food is served promptly and still hot from the kitchen. All the better to wash it down with a cerveza or margarita. read more

We have been going to El sombrero for years. We always sit with Mario. Mario is so sweet and accommodating. The burrito marino is delicious and huge. We share it and it is more than enough. It is filled with shrimp, grilled onions and peppers, and covered in queso. It also comes with rice. We add ranchero sauce to it to add a bit more flavor. The salsa has nice flavor and a little spice. What is served is medium. They have a hot salsa upon request. It is darker in color and smokier. The margaritas are good; we get 1800 tequila and Mario does a great job making them. They never disappoint. read more

On point, as always! I love take-out and never used to get my husband to do it, that is, until Covid! Store was clean, limited contact, delicious food and amazing Margarita to-go! Yum! They usually tell you to grab a seat, when they come for drink orders they are usually ready for your food order too! They will bring you chips and mild salsa, ask for the hot if you like spicy, it's really good! Lunch menu has lots of options and is very reasonably priced! Two can eat for less than $15! Today my friend order the chicken with cheese and rice and I opted for the #5 lunch which included chile rellano (stuffed pepper with cheese), taco, and beans and rice. It was only $5.79! Service is friendly, and food is fast and hot! Food is pretty good as well. This is my first time in a long time to eat here. But locals love it! Restaurant was clean. I've been going here off and on for a few years and I do adore them. We've gotten to know some of the staff and always have such a great time talking and laughing with them. My daughter out of the blue several visits ago said, "Feliz Cumpleanos" to the waiter/manager that was waiting on us because she had learned that term in Spanish. It ended up actually being his birthday! Not kidding. So, ever since then we just tell him happy birthday everytime we see him. The food is great. They always have daily specials posted on their board as you come through the doors so check those out. The cheese dip is the white cheese and it's very reasonable in price. This place was a nice find. I decided to have lunch here because I was very early for a doctor's appointment. At first, I was going to order a take-out and I did. Then, a few minutes after I ordered, I changed my mind and decided to dine in the restaurant. The staff was very accommodating and did not seem annoyed at my change. Actually, they seemed happy that I decided to stay. While yes, as other reviewers have stated, the food is on par with almost any other Mexican restaurant in this region of the United States, the staff seemed much nicer. They were very understanding as I tried to practice my limited Spanish during my lunch experience. The complimentary chips and salsa were nice. The chips were crispy and not oily. The salsa was a little spicy without making me sweat. My sweet tea was just about perfect. It was not syrupy-sweet. It was a bit sweeter than unsweetened teas, but not so sweet that you need an insulin shot after drinking it. I ordered the huevos con chorizo with beans and rice. This dish was really nice because it was not a greasy as in some other Mexican restaurants. There were a few TVs and many Mexican-themed paraphernalia on the walls. I've been going to El Sombrero since they opened in the old Bearnos place. Good food and service. As a regular, I'm met with my drink of choice and a friendly greeting. The food is much better than your typical Mexican place, but the choices are the same. Their chorizo is mild but tasty. The arroz con pollo is a good choice for those who don't love Mexican food. The chicken and rice soup is excellent. The shrimp always tastes a little gritty, like it needs to be washed more. The tacos are average, but not anything like the Old El Paso tacos you make at home. Fajitas are very good and plentiful. Salsa is excellent, but there is better in town (and nearby). Queso dip varies from day to day -- sometimes runny, sometimes thick. Sometimes it is spicy, but not usually. The decor is not good. You can tell it used to be a different restaurant even after all these years. Some of the seats are falling apart, but they fix things rather quickly. The bathrooms are clean but dark. The bar is almost always empty, but it is stocked. They have those beer towers, and margaritas are available in all sizes and strength. The TVs are failing. They are tuned to sports, usually in Spanish. The music is average Spanish/Mexican fare. It is not too loud, though. El Sombrero is great for large groups. Tables are easily put together. It is also great for families. It used to be a neighborhood gathering place until a competitor opened down the street with better salsa and TVs that work. The food, with the exception of the shrimp, is five star. What makes this place a four star is the decor. A few fixes and this place would be great. read more

This is hands down the best mom and pop Mexican restaurant in Jeffersonville. I might be biased, but their food is always fresh and on point! The issues I have are the major difference in how their service is run, the gentlemen are the friendliest, the ladies are not friendly at all.. I find this sad, because bad service can eventually kill even the best restaurants. You can almost sense a feeling of animosity or maybe obligation from the ladies vs the gents. The men greet you with a welcome amigo everytime, esp the owner and Mario. The ladies teens to be exactly as described in another review. The good food offsets the bad service from the ladies and only adds to the excellent service when any of the gents wait on us. I suspect maybe family dynamics come into play? read more

My man does not like much mexican food but i know he likes chicken burritos. So i ordered #13. My man said he didnt like it. I said dont throw it away and i will eat it. Well...it wasnt chicken at all. It was beef. So now im mad. But too late to take it back. Good place for lunch, the food is what you get at most basic Mexican restaurants. They do a pretty good lunch business so be prepared that you may have to wait for the server as well as in line to cash out. I have found that it goes better if you have your complete order ready the first time the waitress comes by or it may be a while before you see them again. I use to eat here when I lived in Jeffersonville and always had great food. I decided to stop by while in area. The food was ok but little taste other than tomatoe. I asked for a coke to drink and had to ask again after food was delivered. I was the only one in restaurant at the time. As I was eating there was a gentailment killing flies near me as I tried to eat. My waiter was good and checked on me several times. He was probably the best part of the visit. I live just around the corner from here and go all the time. The food is good quality and for the price the portions are good. I like to get the numbered meal specials, like 1 burrito, 1 enchilada and a taco for $8 and my wife likes the Nachos el Carbon. If you get there during a slow time of day they can have your food in less than 5 minutes. It takes longer if they're busy but it's not a terrible wait (10-15 at the most). read more

I ordered an entree based on price listed on their website and when my daughter paid for it the price was almost $8 more. Their response was it's a different location!! Then my response is "this website should not be listed for their location if pricing is not correct" next issue is I also ordered a Taco Salad, item was paid for but restaurant left item out and we had to make another trip back to store to p/u item that was ordered and paid for already. The managers response was we don't have time for carry outs. Of course than comment did not set well with me at all. El Sombrero is Jeff's attempt to capture how Mexican is done. They start you off with chips and salsa. They are your dollar-a-bag standard tasting combination. Again, I am setting your expectation that the taste is a standard if you were in Mexico. I had a taste of their Carnitas, and it was awesome! It wasn't your Mex-American Carnitas that you see in Food Network; think of it as Carnitas prepared by Señora Margarita. Do not expect to taste Qdoba or Chipotle when you visit El Sombrero.
