I got the arroz con Pollo and the kids got kids meals with nuggets & quesadilla for one and pizza for the other. My daughter really wanted Mexican food so we came here passing through. The food was not very good. It tasted very flavorless and it was super expensive. Expect to pay at least $15 for anything on the menu. My friend ordered a plate with quesadillas and they were super basic with cheese. To get meat would have been an up charge. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We got our food quickly and they refilled our water frequently. The vibe of the restaurant was pretty tacky and nothing to be remembered. I was on a temporary on the fringe of Bremerton, a co-worker advised the closest place to get food was Belfair. 1St stop was Burger Claim, I had eaten there in Ground Mound and they had a drive through. What I saw inside this location were prices far beyond the quality of burger I experienced before. I left, headed across the street to a Chinese spot that Yelp advised was open, when I got there, there was a handwritten sign in the window that read Closed Monday, Tuesday. Headed back across the street to a Taco Truck. There was no parking, so I again left. At this point, I had burned up 20 of my 30 minute break. I ended up at El Sombrero. I love Mexican food and the reviews here looked good. Inside, no one spoke much English which made me feel comfortable that the food would be full of flavor and authentic. Unfortunately, nothing was good, the salsa was weak, meat lacked flavor and the rice and beans tastes microwaved. I have head tale that some restaurant serve leftovers from dinner for lunch and maybe that was the case here, but I was disappointed. Everyone was nice and friendly, but the food was a fail. I steer clear of chains like Azteca, mostly because the food isn't authentic, but I hate to admit, Azteca would have been a welcome plate over what I was served here this day. read more

Worst Mexican food I have ever had, it is definitely white people Mexican food. In fact, it tastes like what I imagine Mexican food would taste like if they served in in a nursing home, bland, no flavor whatsoever, nothing special to make me want to come back. I even came back after they had new owners hoping it would be better and no, it's still bland. I believe what I ordered was called Arroz con Camarones. It was phenomenal. The shrimp were butterflied & the tail meat was intact on each one. (Prepared by someone much more skilled than myself). El Sombrero is an authentic, modern Mexican food establishment located west of Tacoma on the way toward Sahale Eco Village. Inside this restaurant is a fun, colorful atmosphere. When I entered, there seemed to be a buffet bar going on, but I wasn't informed on what or who it was for. Maybe a lunch buffet? Not sure, and I forgot to ask once I ordered. I got a few quick tacos in a combo plate with rice and beans, which was delicious. Loved the chips and salsa here, too - and I'm pretty particular about that. The restrooms were located in this weird back hallway place. Generally the place was clean enough, but not super impressive. The masa around the meat was enough to hold the tamales together but not this massive amount most places use. The salsa with the chips was spicy and flavorful and chunky. I so wanted to give El Sombrero 4 stars, but I just couldn't do it. My family and I enjoyed our dinner there, and I would certainly go back. It was A-OK. My wife said it was the best Mexican food she's had since we moved to the Kitsap peninsula a year ago. The prices for the margaritas and kids meals were excellent, too. I think my wife's margarita was like $5 and it was HUGE. I had a trio of enchiladas so I could try their mole sauce. The mole was a little wattery, but tasted okay. The food was pretty good. The chips were light and crispy and the salsa was excellent - thick, flavorful, and with some kick. Above average for chips and salsa for most Mexican restaurants around the peninsula. Just like every other place in Kitsap, they serve Pepsi products (bleh). The service was meh. Prompt and polite, but they all looked like they hated their life. No enthusiasm whatsoever. Considering this is the only Mexican restaurant around we decided to give it a shot. It's very subpar; they have something called the "gringo plate" which is slightly inappropriate. "Gringo" just isn't a great term, it's like being called "beaner". Regardless, the beans have no flavor, the guacamole is gross I didn't even touch mine after tasting it. The carne asada is very chewy, had a hard time getting that sucker down. Needless to say their Jarito drinks are the best thing on their menu. The staff is very friendly though, super kind. Was in Belfair for a family trip to the lake for a weekend and we ended up coming to El Sombrero, and to be completely honest, there aren't many restaurants highly reviewed out in this area and we ended up here. I thought I'd give them some love. It's a nice decent sized place, and the food and the service were pretty damn bangin'!!! The wait staff kept checking on us to make sure we always had chips and salsa and something I have never been given at a Mexican restaurant before and that was a bowl of beans to dip your chips in, and yes! it was amazing! And they always made sure our drinks were filled. I ordered 3 tacos (ground beef, chicken, and chili verde) and it came with rice and beans. All 3 tacos were so fricken (sp?) delicious. At the end of the meal they gave us these chips with cinnamon and whip cream on top complimentary! If I go back to this area at some point I will probably come back and try something new! Although the food wasn't fantastic, the chips and homemade salsa were pretty good. This place is typical American style Mexican, but it was refreshing to find something decent to eat on our road trip back to Seattle from the Pennisula that wasn't fast food, chain restaurants, or diners. The portions are pretty large and the main dishes a bit expensive for my liking ($10 for a burrito, 13 for a combo) so I would reccomend sharing with a buddy. read more

They call their lunch buffet a taco bar, but it's really much more. $7.99 includes pop and dessert - homemade flan & rice pudding, plus some interesting cookies. I'm on a diet, and was able to fashion a delicious salad from their bowl of iceberg, shredded chicken, tomatoes, a few olives, and sour cream mixed with salsa. They also have a variety of burritos & such, conveniently portioned small for the full buffet experience. I wasn't lovin' on the chile rellenos, a particular favorite of mine. I stopped doing Yelp reviews for awhile because wbweyone gives people crap about yelping but I've decided it's time to start again, especially since I'm traveling for work/school. Anyway, I just got out of class and decided that tacos sounded like a good choice. Google showed me this place first. It's a small location but easy to find and there was plenty of parking. I was greeted immediately and the hostess was very friendly. I chose to take out my order because it's starting to snow outside. I paid $14 for 3 street tacos with beans and rice. Plus a $3 tip. It's a small town so I was expecting high prices. I got the carnitas. The hostess said they are pre-packaged so I couldn't mix the meat choices. I was trying to wrap my mind around how tacos are prepackaged during dinner time. I think it takes away the fresh street taco taste that most places have. My tacos were very soggy and bland. I don't like giving mediocre reviews but I was not very impressed for the amount I paid. The salsa tasted like it came from a jar at the store and the beans and rice were just okay. I read reviews on google saying the food was bland but didn't think it could be THAT bad, but it was just OKAY. We've had lots of opportunities to go back and haven't even thought to go there, but I wouldn't shy away from it either if someone suggested it. When we did go, it was around 8:30pm on a Friday night... it was SO quiet in there I felt like we needed to whisper. Not empty, just so QUIET.
