My enchiladas and soup

Service was fine. Chips where kinda stale and salsa was yummy. Got my order wrong (I wanted 2 chicken enchiladas and 1 beef but gave me the opposite). Food was overall good but the soup I could've gone without. I liked the enchiladas, the beans were some of the better beans I've had and the rice was fine. Very quick service though. Dimly lit and looked authentic.

Our table of food and drinks (over an hour at the table and only had 2 rounds of drinks)

I loved this place about 15 years ago and revisited it last month and was terribly disappointed. I remember the portions being amazing and the drinks being excellent but both were less than subpar along with the service that was taking forever-30 minutes to get the first round of drinks left us ordering the next round upon arrival. My brother's girlfriend insisted this was a place she had to go when in town from Georgia and she was equally dissatisfied with her regular dish. I wish she had listened and tried Ocho Cafe instead though I was excited to revisit the place prior to the lackluster experience. Ambiance is meh; I preferred the former location as it seemed more intimate and authentic compared to simply loud and crowded.

Combinacion Sarape with Tostadas and Enchiladas Poblanos
Jessica B.

My friend and I most recently came here because she loves this place and it was her birthday, although I've been here a few (forgettable) times in the past. I am no expert in authentic mexican cuisine, however I am an expert in what tastes good to me and unfortunately this was just not it... We were served chips and salsa upon arrival. The salsa was great and tasted fresh. The chips had an "average" thickness to them and were sort of bland. I prefer them to be thin & salty. I ordered the "combinacion sarape" for my meal with beef tostadas and chicken enchiladas poblanos. The tostada was smothered in shredded lettuce. Like drowning in it. You couldn't pick up the tostada either because it was extremely soggy and needed to be eaten with a fork & knife. The mole sauce on the enchiladas and refried black beans were the best parts of my meal. The rest was just bland and lacking flavor. It left a lot to be desired. There are better mexican options in the area in my opinion.

a plate of mexican food

I've been coming here since high school and it's my favorite Mexican restaurant in the boston area. I always get the beef burrito with red sauce and it's just the most delicious thing. I've never had bad service here - the people who work here are the most warm and welcoming. The red sangria is also to die for. My dad used to get their seafood dishes which are also good. El serape is a no frills neighborhood joint. If you expect something super high end or luxurious this isn't the spot, but for awesome old school Mexican food, you won't find better.

I haven't been here in years, they used to have a special that was not on the menu. It had an enchilada plate, followed by another plate of maybe soft tacos? Anyone remember this and what it was called?

Hi, we have a dish for two people called the Combination Grande. It’s not on the menu but we still serve it. It starts with a plate for each person with rice, beans and a tostada, followed by a plate of 3 enchiladas, a soft taco and deep fried…

David and Esmeralda are especially wonderful and always make us feel welcome. My boyfriend loves the burritos and the caesar salad. I'm obsessed with the Tacos Mexico with steak. Their refried beans are honestly the best I've ever had. I really think this is the best Mexican restaurant in MA. We also love the house margaritas!!

I would rather have Thai food, Indian food or Italian food. However, having said this, I can state that this particular Mexican restaurant is truly wonderful. The atmosphere is clean and pleasant, but nothing special. The service is above par. Servers are polite and smile and get the orders correct and come back and check on patrons without being overbearing. The food, is where this place truly shines. The dish that I relished at sombrero's Mexican restaurant was the Burrito Del Mar! I do have to say that the reason it didn't get an additional star is that the restaurant management seems to tolerate screaming unruly babies. I know that crying and unruly children are not the fault of the restaurant management. They are, however, something that can be controlled by asking parents with such children to take them out of the restaurant until they calm down. Not only is this reasonable, but more and more restaurants are instituting policies about unruly babies and children. We spent a significant amount of money on our dinner because everything is expensive these days. We are not paying for surround sound coming from unruly children.

Note-review contains 3 separate incidents…read more 1- PreCovid btw- coworker and i went in one night for food and much needed drinks. Not sports season so it wasnt packed, nor was it too late in the day, approx 545/6pm. It was just us and another table of 2. Since drinks was the goal, we sat at the bar. We sat there for a solid 15 minutes before someone came by to give us water. After that, she asked if we were getting food. We both responded yes and she then indicated that someone else will be taking our order, then went to help someone who came in to pick up their take out. Okay..? Bartender comes up and takes our drink order, gets our drinks and then comes back to take our food order. Maybe 30 mins or more passed before we got our food. Again, it was us and one other table who was already in there prior to our arrival. Finally - food. The tacos were pretty damn good! Fresh, not frozen, and nicely seasoned. Also got their lemon pepper chicken tenders which were CRACK. Dry and crunchy on the outside (in a good way) and super juicy inside. Bartender did occasionally check up on us and ask if we needed anything. After the food, drinks, and chatting, we paid and left. Also, ordered takeout for my bf and threw my 2 tenders in the box so he could try their goodness when i got home. His eyes widened when he crunched down on the tender and noticed how juicy it was. One bite had him reeling for more. Next time. So minus the long wait and hunting someone down, the food was pretty good and drinks were strong - also a plus. I said id def come back. 2- during covid but before the shutdown - called in with my bf to try and get some of those insane tenders. Phone kept ringing. Called 2 more times, same thing. Finally, one last try, and someone picked up. "Id like to place an order for takeout please?" The woman responded with: "we dont do takeout." ...ive literally seen a person go in to get takeout...? I replied with "ok no problem. Thanks!" Defeated and confused, we didnt end up getting game time that night and had to settle for something else. 3-reopening during covid&most recent- called in on a friday night for takeout (yes, i tried again since i saw some1 go in and it didnt make sense to me that they "dont do takeout") We placed our order and the girl read it back to us - perfect. 25 minutes. We get there and see that it was a super busy night for them! Dark inside but you can see people inside, trying to slip past each other, to have drinks and enjoy their night. Anyways, we came out with 2 bags of food and somehow the bill came out to $97. We ordered 2 orders of tacos - 1 chicken and 1 carnitas - (comes with 3 in an order), tenders, buffalo wings and fries. Girl got our order wrong bc we somehow had 2 bags with 3 orders carnitas and 2 orders of chicken. Thats 15 tacos total. We were fine with the extra food but also like WTF. Again, tacos were pretty darn good. Fries were a bit sad. Bland. Bf's a stickler for fresh wings. He can eat spicy/hot food but, this time, he had to take a break. The buffalo sauce was flavorful and intense and i mean that in the best possible way. Needless to say, he approved of the wings for its freshness and for the buffalo sauce. My tenders.... not sure what kind of oil it was fried in but dang was it oily, like glistening and shiny. There was a pool of oil in my container. Despite this, i still tried them because their tenders were crack the first time i had them. Oh man... it was like eating oil. I didnt realize how much the oil had permeated the tenders crunchy exterior. Still crunchy, still had the lemon pepper flavor, but overshadowed by the excessive amount of oil and the flavor of the oil. Maybe canola? Idk. I'd still order from there... but maybe not takeout anymore since my order was so screwed up so maybe we'll just have to go in. Giving it 4 stats for the food and strong drinks
