El Rey Azteca is one of my favorite casual Mexican restaurants in town. I typically order a bean burrito à la carte because it's always delicious and not too much food after I've filled up on chips and salsa (sometimes cheese dip too). Their regular salsa is great and I always have to ask for more of it, but if you like heat, try their spicy salsa. It has a complex, rich dried chili flavor that I enjoy on its own or mixed with their regular salsa. The margaritas are also solid, the frozen is very good and top shelf is a strong choice. They can get busy during peak times, but luckily the space is large and even on a busy night I've had excellent service. read more

There was no wait time about 3:15pm. Welcomed at the door and seated right away. Our order was placed and brought to our table freshly made and efficiently. Customer service was very exceptional and comforting. I enjoyed the interior design and art as well. I moved from the neighborhood of Bellevue TN and closer to Madison. My wife and I stumbled upon this Mexican restaurant and we've eaten there every week since. The worst Mexican food I've ever tried to eat. The rice and beans smelled like dirty socks, and didn't taste much better. Chili Relleno should NOT be made with canned white cheese, and should NOT contain ground beef. The Tamale was inedible processed masa filed with...ground beef. My girls and I decided to meet at El Rey's on a Friday night at 6 pm and many of the tables were already full. We walked in, was greeted, and seated immediately. Our server spoke minimal english but was attentive to our large party. She promptly took our drink orders and gave us four bowls of chips and salsa to share. ***Please be advised the drinks are strong so be mindful of your alcohol tolerance. *** Since I was driving I ordered a small frozen mango margarita and it was delicious. For those non-driving individuals I recommend the large glass to get your monies worth or a pitcher to share otherwise; if you are driving or have a low sensitivity to alcohol order the small or better yet just stick to water. I decided to order the chicken taco salad and it was filling but just ok (refer to the picture). It had way too much sour cream, watery at the bottom, and the bowl tasted slightly burnt but it was edible. Honestly I have had better so I will stick to my usual Mexican preferred entrees fish or shrimp tacos or chicken enchiladas from now on. By this time it was almost 7 pm and the drinks were settling in and voices began to escalate around the restaurant. Two security guards began to walk the aisles asking patrons to lower their voices. I must say they were nice about it. The female restroom was clean but the non-handicapped stall is so small that you have to hold your chin up while squatting so that your face won't touch the door. I made it back to the table as the server started dispersing the checks and mine came to $12.01. All in all it is a great spot for groups that offers reasonable priced food and a wide selection of beverages and Happy Hour specials. Security is present to keep order as I have seen that most people can't control their alcohol and will be escorted off of the premises if need be. read more

This place is a hidden gold mine! The food at El Rey Azteca is to die for. I never thought my husband and I would find such authentic delicious flavors way out of California, Los Angeles, but we found this place. It was pure luck that we ended up eating there because we drove from Florida to Minnesota, and we got a hotel right in front of this Mexican Restaurant. Anyways, the waiters and waitress are all very nice and very attentive. We got fresh chips and salsa, huge drinks, and the dinner portions were more than we can hangle. The prices are very inexpensive, and the food was to lick your fingers. My favorite was the Bistec a la Tampiqueña, and it had a side of beans with cheese, orange rice, and some delicious fresh guacamole! My husband had the enchiladas rancheras, and all I can say is that I wish I could have split my dinner with my husband so we can both eat from each other's plates, but he didn't want to share all of his dinner with me. He only gave me a couple of bites so I can try his dinner. But I am grateful he gave me a taste of it! tee-hee! We went back 5 days later when we were driving back to Florida, and this time we made it for lunch, and I ordered the Carne Asada nachos. Only if they used the original chips that they give as appetizers, I would have loved it more. They did the chips too fancy, and they were made from flour totillas, and I like corn tortilla chips way better. That is my only criticism. Stick to original corn tortillas. We did not intend to eat Mexican food tonight but decided to take a chance on a restaurant just off the highway. It did not look like a Mexican restaurant from the outside but the name and inside decor obviously were. We enjoyed Carnitas, Carne Asada (steak) taco's, a Chile Relleno (stuffed poblano pepper) and queso ( white cheese dip). The food was delicious and service was fast. The poblano pepper was stuffed with cheese and meat and was slightly greasy. The steak tacos with cilantro and onion were fabulous. The carnitas plate was a very tasty dish with a generous portion served. Their cheese dip and salsa was also very good. Worth the stop in! read more

I know that there are tons of great Mexican joints in the Nashville area, but this place is close to much of what I come to town for (gigs and a place to crash.) It smells a little funny (so does every Chili's - the very same smell, in fact) and the service is usually either surly or indifferent, but the food and drinks are great. (Today's waiter reminded me of a Mexican Igor.) Chips come out hot and the salsa is chunky, flavorful and freshly made. Nice atmosphere, happy hour pricing (2 - 9 pm? That's a happy day!) and decent prices make this a no-brainer - as long as you don't mind the staff. Peculiar folk (as I'm sure they feel the same about me.) I had the Pollo Acapulco (a grilled chicken breast topped with chorizo and cheese sauce. Served with rice, beans and guacamole salad.). Seriously good and they didn't even charge me for the extra cilantro. Needless to say, I'll be back. Maybe next time, I'll get a server who has a bit of joy in their hearts. read more

Phenomenal authentic Mexican food! We flew into Nashville and wanted to stop somewhere along the way to my parents house. ElRays is 1 min off the highway! The workers speak minimal English, but that's always a sign of great food, in my opinion!! They did not disappoint. When you're hot & tired, and it's right next door (walking distance) to your hotel, then this is the place to be! Happy "Hour" is from 3-9pm, and the drink specials proved it. The salsa was really good, with real onion and fresh cilantro, and the guacamole wasn't completely mashed ... but it had hints of bacon flavor! The chips were warm and served right away. Great for munching on while waiting for your drinks. The food was average and kinda salty, but the portions were decent. I had the #11 special (normally $7.75 but on Tuesdays, they're all $5.75): a burrito, a taco and an enchilada. The beef wasn't greasy but sort of salty, and the red sauce reminded me of Spaghettios. The taco wasn't smothered in lettuce and cheese and was quite refreshing. I also got a plain quesadilla, which was buttery goodness. I'd do that one again! Hubby got the steak en salsa verde, and said that the salsa verde wasn't very spicy at all and the steak was pretty well torched. But after 2 big ol' margaritas, we didn't care. As soon as you step through the doors, the weary traveler is transported to a delightful dining experience! We walked over from the Super 8 with our toddler, were seated quickly in a booth (our preference with our toddler in tow) and drink order taken. My strawberry margarita was the best I've had- ever. Hubs got a frosty Dos Equiis he was happy with. We ordered the Guadalajara Special and a Veggie Quesadilla plate. Chips and salsa came out- chips had good flavor and were warm- perfect thickness- good tomato salsa flavor. Food came out fast- and was amazing! Our server was very attentive. At first blush, it may seem to be just another Mexican joint, but it is consistently great food, consistently clean, consistently fast. It's very affordable. My boyfriend and I were staying at a hotel near here and the place looked packed so we figured it had to be good, so I jumped on Yelp looking for reviews and almost all of them were great so we ordered tacos with carnitas and carne asada. The carnitas tasted old. I get that they probably make the meat for the entire day when they open, but this was not good. Also, when we weren't given an option of corn or flour tortillas we just assumed they defaulted to corn. I was super disappointed when I opened the foil and they were flour. The guacamole somehow tasted watered down? It was definitely not my favorite. We ordered it with cheese and sour cream, but of course, they did not have them when we opened the foil. We also asked for limes, also missing. Ultimately, we probably shouldn't have expected Chicago level tacos outside of Nashville, but based on the reviews we were completely disappointed. read more

Solid 4 star restaurant because of their food, their portions (quite large), and the care and effort they put into their restaurant. If you look closely, it really is quite impressive. I had the sincronazada based on one yelpers photo, and it was really good. It was kinda like getting two quesadillas for the price of one. Very filling and definitely will be back. read more

About the only thing to eat near my office...so I eat there a good bit. The food is good if you order the right things, but they kill you with any add-on at $1 per request. If you ask them for a little sour cream or cilantro, they bring you a bowl of them and charge a $1 for each. Too much and too pricey! read more
