One of the hardest things about cooking for one is managing your meat selection. One of the greatest mysteries in life for me has always been why the smallest amount of chicken breast you can buy is three, and then the next size up is a super mega family 20 pack. Anyway ... That's why the best thing you can do is find yourself a good Mexican butcher shop, like La Altena. The selection isn't big or complicated, however everything they DO have is of high quality. They have marinated steak and chicken fajitas which are very tasty and pretty much impossible to mess up when cooking. They have smoked pork chops, marinated meat for tacos al pastor, and a very good authentic chorizo. Try their tablitas, which are spare ribs cut across the rib (think galbi). On the weekends they have a limited amount of homemade tortillas for sale, its first come first serve and by midday they're usually out. There is also a small store here with mostly non perishable goods for sale. They have a cooler in the back and its always stocked with Jarritos two liters so go ahead and grab you one of those to enjoy. Service is friendly and helpful, I once let them know that I was buying chicken breast for milanesa which requires a thin breast to be pounded out. Without any prompting from me the butcher offered to slice the whole breasts in half to make it easier, saved me 30 minutes of work. I will warn you though, you're probably going to have to know Spanish or be really really confident in your communication with hand gestures and slow talking. They do take cards but theres a $5 minimum. Grab you a pound of fajitas, a two liter of Jarritos Limon and a stack of tortillas and you'll be out of there for $7-$8 Trying is the first step towards failure.

The ambience is inviting and festive with its traditional colorful passport cut decorations known as paper picado. It's definitely a little homey and reminded me of my family who are in another state. The interior is spacious with a lot of tables and chairs. They also sell meat, other products and some produce that's located on the right-hand side after entering. I ended up ordering Quesabirria tacos place which included rice and beans. Their Quesabirria tacos with their birria consommé was amazing. The meat was flavorful, tender, with consommé with both their green and red-hot sauces were just chef's kiss. The meat didn't have fat, since a lot of places do serve it with all the fatty parts, so it was awesome that these Quesabirria tacos didn't have the meat fat in them. By far some of the best Quesabirria tacos with their bomb hot sauces. I complimented the lady who made them since I walked over to the area where you order and behind the counter is where they cook the food. The lady who made them said, thank you, it was me who made them and she said she was happy to hear I was happy with them. Honestly, these Quesabirria tacos were cooked with umami, especially with the hot sauces. I'm craving them now that I'm writing this up. Hehe he You all have to check them out and if you love Quesabirria tacos you most definitely have to stop by. I also ordered an Aguas fresca and opted for their cantaloupe Aguas fresca. It was okay, but I wasn't a fan, it didn't taste like it was made from cantaloupe, it tasted more like prepackaged powder to me, so that was the only let-down.
