Four stars to the owner, who is from El Salvador but knows how to make Mexican barbacoa!- That is precisely the spirit of my brothers and sisters from El Salvador-if they do not know how to do something, they will learn and make it even better! The barbacoa plate has plenty of food. This is the first time I have seen barbacoa served with rice, beans, and salad, but that is fine. The tortillas are handmade, fresh, and made in Central American style (smaller and thicker than Mexican tortillas). Next time I will try their pupusas which many people have recommended. read more

My wife had the #3 Sampler. Tamale masa fell away from the meat stuffing, ordered cheese enchilada and got beef, didn't like the beans. I ate her taco; meat was good, not enough cheese. I had the Milanese plate. Meat was more tender than expected and a little too salty. Don't know why they serve it. There was no sauce or gravy, just lightly breaded, thin meat. I liked the beans and rice. The corn tortillas were kind of puffy; liked them. The salsa was just right for throat heat, would have liked cilantro in it. The "server" seemed like management. Never came back to see if everything was good. Prices are very reasonable, chips warm, but the bowl didn't look clean. I had to take a salt shaker from another table and it was dirty. My back kept sticking to the chair. I may go back, but not my wife. read more

Instead of updating their menu prices, they just put a label on the menu saying the prices have changed. I should have considered that a red flag and left. I ordered the enchilada plate which says it comes with 3 enchiladas. You can see in the picture provided that I only received 2 and they were pretty small. The portion of fried plantains was laughable for $5 and the cream tasted rancid. Besides the cream, the rest of the food was decent and they provided a good amount of salsa. If I had to speculate as to why my review is dissimilar from others, I would guess it's because I'm coming from DFW and this place is good by Abilene standards. read more

OMG...you need this place. You MUST eat here if you are in Abilene. This is a new (or second) location for this restaurant, and the food is just as wonderful here as it was in the first. You NEED the fried plantains. Everything is homemade, and we eat something different every time. We have never been disappointed, and you won't be disappointed either. El Pulgarcito is one of Abilene's great hole in the wall places. Family owned and run. Been going to the south side restaurant for years. This one on the north side has been open over a month. It looks like the husband is running south side and the wife is in charge here. She is so sweet, I like her. I love their food. The spicy ranchero pork chops are incredible. And they are spicy. I found out about pupusa's here and their great! My favorites are jalapeño and cheese, and pork and cheese. So good! Their pozole is my favorite in town, and the Caldo is great. They serve Salvadoran food as well as Mexican. You need to try El Pulgarcito. You'll be happy you did! read more

The service was good, the food was good and the chips were AMAZING! We stopped in for breakfast about 0930 on Friday morning. The restaurant was empty save for a to go order. We were greeted right away. We ordered 4 papusas, chiliqules, and the Salvadoran breakfast. All the food was really good! Fresh, hot and delicious. Four stars instead of five because the scrambled eggs were very salty on their own. We will certainly be back. read more

Came here 23 Dec because my wife wanted Mexican food.. We never ate here before, but off of the reviews we decided to try this spot out. Let me get straight to the review.. - Horchata- Wasn't homemade, and came out of a dispenser but it still tasted nice and sweet - Queso Fundido (I ordered as an appetizer)- Nothing special about this at all! It pretty much was melted cheese that was placed in a microwave and served.. They put it in the microwave so long, that when it was served the cheese had that "skin" layer on top.. I had to stir several times, and "skim" the top off of impurities. - Salsa (complimentary)- It had a nice spicy bite to it, it was decent.. Really no complaints - Chips- I couldn't tell if they were homemade or store bought.. My wife thinks they were store bought.. I didn't care for them because they weren't warm.. They pretty much was "slightly" colder than room temp - Chicken Enchiladas (Dinner) with an egg on top and I elected for the green sauce, which the waiter recommended.. He was right, the green sauce had some nice flavor to it...The meal came with beans and rice.. The food came out piping hot, which is a good thing! Rice had some nice decent flavor and the beans the same... My complaint was the chicken was on the dry side.. My wife got the steak fajitas, she said the steak had some nice flavor, but didn't care for the flour tortillas because they were huge (burrito size) and they were on the "thick" side.. Service was excellent! Food was really good with big portions. I ordered the chicken flautas, and my husband got chicken enchiladas. Neither of us could finish our plate, not even half. The restaurant itself could use some cleaning up but overall it was good and we would return. read more

Came here for breakfast on a whim, and we are super impressed. Family owned, very personal dining experience. I got the chilaquiles and they are great! Generous portions, and full of flavor. My husband got 3 breakfast burritos, one barbacoa, one chorizo and egg, and another bacon and egg. The chorizo and bacon were amazing, the barbacoa just had barbacoa in it (you have to specify if you want cheese or anything extra, we didn't know) overall, we'll definitely be coming back! read more

Looking for a hole In the wall burrito place this is an okay stop. Service was subpar, the waitress was who sat and helped us came once and seemed impatient with us when I answered her question about our drinks in English. Tortillas are great, portion size is good. But the sodas were flat. Salsa is NASTY- tastes like ketchup :( ruined my otherwise decent carne asada burrito. My son enjoyed his bacon and egg burrito although he did have to pick out some big globs of fatty bacon and I found it very salty. No chips given with food. read more
