Authentic Spanish food in the middle of nowhere...wow I just found a gem! This place is delicious and affordable! The portions are huge and I would usually split it up to two with empanadas. Home made lemonade pairs well with it, yes it's homemade I saw them squeezing lemon juice out of the lemon ! I got the pernil and it is marinated very well. The skin is fatty delicious. Pair it with rice and pigeon peas and it's pretty good. I normally ask for some sauce on the rice. Empanadas are crunchy. I will be back to try the ribs and curry next time :) read more

We are in Staten Island, NY and we are so looking forward to eating and having a great time in the big Apple. It's a very small place and we were craving Puerto Rican food. So we got the following: Puerto Rican rice - good Pasteles - good Pepper steak - very good Pernil - good Potatoe salad- bland but ok Pollo guisado - very good Alcapurrias - not good at all. Hard not edible. Took a bit and left the rest. Potatoe ball or relleno de papa- not good. The portions are worth the money. Very generous and the staff was very kind. Overall it was good. I placed an order 6 days in advance with Ana and paid in full. They ran my card before I even got off the phone. I then confirmed the order the day before my event with Stella. I made it VERY clear I needed them to deliver my order by 1 o'clock - no later and this was understood and acknowledged. The day of my event the delivery man called me, he went to a completely different address, he was lost and didn't know how to get to me. Making it worse he only spoke Spanish and I don't, I only know a few words. I kept calling the store and trying to speak to a manager who was nowhere to be found. FINALLY, at around 1:45 he called me , he was in the "neighborhood" and didn't know where my house was. I had to go outside and walk around the neighborhood until I spotted him and flagged him down. By the time I got to my event I was late, stressed and sweaty. This business has NO COMMUNICATION with the customer, they lack professionalism and I will NEVERRRRR order from them again. In the search for solid Pernil and arroz con gandules took me to El Pollo today as it was recommended to me by the folks I work with. Parking is a disaster, very difficult to find a spot, there is parking within a 5 minute walk. Menu is listed when you walk in and the food is laid out in a large steam table for you to view. Portions are no joke, plates run between $9-$11. The pernil is excellent, seasoned perfectly. The arroz con gandules is good, unfortunately no olives and it could use more seasoning, solid nonetheless. I make this dish very well.....hey I know I'm Italian but I grew up in Coney Island and have a million Puerto Rican friends so I consider myself 3 percent Puerto Rican. Unfortunately my wife and kids don't like this dish and it's borderline ridiculous to cooks this unless you are making it for an army. El Pollo is clean and has approximately 10 tables of 4. The restaurant is very popular with contractors, city employees and laborers from the area. I highly recommend El Pollo and I cannot wait to go back and try something else as all of the food looks outstanding! read more

I ordered standards from this dump I really tried here. It was Sunday 5 hrs before they closed so I thought I had shot at fresh food. Not a chance. Beef empanada the filling tasted like absolute dog food disgusting I had to throw it out. Maduros at 4pm closing at 9 were the day before's. The Pernil was passable dry but swallowable and the yellow rice was average. Red beans were good so the beans get the 1 star. Down $15 and wondering WTF did I do that to myself. I always take out here for a treat after my gym session (please don't judge, I workout to eat all the delicious food!) I really love the food here and the portions sizes are great to share with my family. I only come here when I am craving authentic Spanish cuisine! The girls that work there are nice and although I don't speak Spanish, we somehow communicate my order effectively. I love the steak with onions. If you are screaming for some el barrio style spanish food, look no further. I feel like I'm in the Bronx here... This is not the same owners as the original EL POLLO on Richmond Road!! I tried calling this place to pick up food and it seems that the number either doesn't work or the place must be so packed out busy and not enough employees to answer the phone which means the place sucks on management, The food is not as great as the EL POLLO original I usually go to. I feel the food stays out longer and just does not taste as fresh or flavorful as it usually would if I had it somewhere else or made it myself. The place is pretty small and right off the West Shore Expwy. Prices are not really that cheap and like I said the food was not great. I chose some finger foods like fried chunks of chicken which were too burnt and really hard to bite into, rice and beans which felt hard too, the empanadas were not that great and they gave me more bones and vegetables then a decent piece of chicken in my chicken soup. I'm pretty surprised at the other reviews. I LOVE Spanish food. I grew up on it, I cook it at home, and the highlight of the travel for work to NYC is the Latin restaurants. During my travel in SI, I found this place- very close to my hotel. I was satisfied with the food. The portions are huge which is great for someone always on the go ( leftovers!!). I had the steak with onions one night - delicious. Not dry, very flavorful. Next time I stopped in I ate the baked chicken. I thought the white meat was juicy and perfectly cooked. I like supporting local businesses and this place has earned it's stripes with me. The staff is friendly. Overall, it was a nice experience. I would give it a try if you are in the area. Side note!! Someone said they found it inconvenient that this place was not open on Sundays... I agree.. BUT!!!!! Coming from someone that has a loved one that owns their own business... I respect that. Great selections. I love this restaurant. I come here with family, since it's really delicious and very affordable Spanish food on Staten Island. I usually order the beef or chicken stew with yellow rice and no beans. But the beans are good! I love the empanadas :) The chicken soup is really good and the chicken bits ( I forgot the name) are yummy as well. I have tried the ox tail and it has really good flavor. I have never disliked my meal at El Pollo, and the portions are huge, so I always have leftovers to take home for lunch the next day! Service is pretty good too, sometimes a bit slow but nothing too horrifying. It's worth it either way, because I always love the food! read more

Beware of the prices you are charged in this restaurant, They will always fluctuate depending on who is serving you! I usually order a alcapurria with a small avocado salad on the side... for the first few months I was getting charged under $5. Then I started to get served by this little lady behind the counter and began to notice that she would charge me a different amount for the same items. I was always hesitant to say something since the prices fluctuated between one and $2...Last time I was there I ordered one potato ball along with A small avocado salad which should be around $5 and I was charged almost $8. Today, Like an idiot I went back to the restaurant only because there aren't too many other places that I like to go eat in this area and I ordered my usual, alcapurria with a small avocado salad, the same little lady rang me up with a total of over $11 ! When I asked her why it was so expensive, she said "oh I made a mistake" I told her to keep the food and that I would never be returning again! I went there today for diner. I ordered the boneless fried chicken chunks and rice with pigeon peas, chicken breast stew from the hot table with rice and two beef empanadas. The fried chicken chunks were thighs and a very small portion for $12. The chicken stew had no stew and flavor but was packed full. The rice had absolutely no flavor. My total bill was $29 with a convenience fee of $1 for using a credit card which was not posted. It's also very upsetting and rude that the staff laughs when you order something and do not pronounce it correctly. What is also upsetting is not one person speaks English, so I can't even complain because they don't understand. I basically threw everything out and wasted $30. read more

Some dishes served here are pretty good the mofongo and camarofongo are very very good... The way I order mine is a mix of the two; regular mofongo with shrimp (thank me later) The fried whole fish the fried porkbeans and rice are very flavorful . Recently I tried the stewed goat and this was also good ... Not so great; the baked chicken... Also the Oxtail is a hit or miss... I guess it depends on who prepares it that day. read more

So as two stars would explain it, I've had better.. My main reason for making my way here is because there are NO OTHER spanish food restaurants in the area, so this place will have to make do. I do love that they are right off the highway, so it's a pretty convenient location, and the fact that they do deliver is a PLUS! I was a little upset that I asked for dark meat only Rotisserie chicken, and they refused to accomodate me. If I'm paying close to $10 for my meal, I'd like to have it my way..
