Amazing!! Parking wasn't a problem and we didn't think we'd have much of a wait because we didn't see many cars. Once we hit the door, a host informed us it would be about a 15 minute wait to be seated and about 45-60mins for our food to come out. We weren't upset that meant that the food would be prepared fresh and come out hot. Our server welcomed us and reminded us what the host had informed us and suggested we get appetizers to hold us over a bit. Drinks came out and were very good (mojitos) and our appetizer of the octopus salad. Now when our meals came out and we each tasted what we ordered, we were in heaven and eating from each others plates. This was a must go to spot for good food. Hands down the best tasting MOFONGO in the island!!!! We had a MOFONGO RELLENO de pulpo which was superb, the octopus was tender! We picked the red sauce for it. We also had a MOFONGO RELLENO de camarones which was my favorite meal with the garlic sauce poured over it. The shrimps were decently sized and had its own flavor. The asopao de marisco was more like a soup. I wasn't sure how it was going to look, I thought it was going to be rice and seafood and the rice being wet with the broth but it was more of a soup. Still, all the flavors were on point!!!! All the dishes were seasoned perfectly. I will definitely say this is one of my favorite flavors of PR. read more

This cozy restaurant in Isabela is my new favorite! My mother said she really enjoys this place, so I had to check it out on my recent visit to the island. El Platanal did not disappoint! It's a nice family owned and operated restaurant. I love how the staff dressed in traditional Puerto Rican attire and were all so nice and welcoming. I thought it was so cool how outside of the restrooms they have antique/retro/old-school items like original crackerjack boxes, Pepsi bottles/cans, irons, radios, fans, etc. The aesthetics on the walls of the restaurant give it a traditional Puerto Rican vibe which I really liked. Ok, onto the food! I ordered 'Carne frita con amarillos' (Fried pork chunks w/ sweet plantains) and my wonderful mother ordered this super interesting dish of 'Pechuga de pollo relleno de amarillos con mamposteao.' I'll do my best to translate this one...it's chicken breast filled with a sweet plantain mash that's wrapped in bacon and drizzled with a Guyaba sauce. The rice is basically a mixture of rice and beans with tiny pieces of ham and onions and peppers and cilantro. Both meals came with a lettuce and tomato salad and I'm not kidding when I say everything was absolutely outstanding! All of the food was fresh, flavorful and tasted amazing. I washed this goodness down with jugo de parcha (passion-fruit juice) that was equally delicious. I've ordered this beverage in tons of Latin restaurants in the US and PR but this was the first time it tasted real, like straight from the fruit and even had the dark seeds in it! I feel le hon and pernil are TWO totally different tasting meats... I personally ordered arroz con gandules with pernil not lechon.... Arrived approximately 4:15pm. Was told 30-35 mins for a table for 3. We waited 45 minutes- ok, no problem. We found out another family member made it to town and was going to join us. We were seated at a table for 4, with 3 place settings. The staff told us that the 4th guest could not sit with us and had a very nasty attitude about it. We finally were able to let our 4th person sit in our empty spot. It took another 30 minutes before someone came to take our drink order and 20 to actually get the drinks (water and colas.) By the time we got our food it was 6:55. The only reason we stayed is because our cousin, has far more patience than I do. The saving grace, and only reason for the 2nd star, for this place is that the food that the rest of the family ordered was very good. They were out of what I wanted. This is billed as a "thematic restaurant," I guess the theme is slow and chaotic. read more

I wish I could review the food but I can't. I was in Puerto Rico on august 20 and had heard great things about the food at Platanal. So I went there about 2:30 in the afternoon with my family and was told the wait would be 25-30 minutes. Which I found reasonably. But after we sat down the server told us the food would take 1 hour or possibly longer to come out of the kitchen. Which was crazy. If I would have been told this when I first arrived I would have just went somewhere else. I'm writing the review to make the management aware and spare someone else from wasting there time waiting. This restaurant has delicious food and by far the best mofongo I have tried! I ordered the seafood mix mofongo in "al ajillo" sauce and its AMAZING! The flavor, the seafood, the portions are great! We also order "surtido", "canasta de churrasco" and to drink the Piña colada. It was so good that I returned again to the restaurant and will be back when I visit PR again. They also have a souvenir shop inside the restaurant (small but cute). If you are looking for delicious mofongo or food in general at reasonable prices you got to try this place. Dorado (mahi mahi) fish tasted like it was taken out of the fridge and put on a pan, unseasoned! When telling the manager about it, his actitud was like they were right and we were wrong. Do not go here, under any circumstances. My family was not treated well and our money was stolen (literally). I am originally from Isabela, so I am not writing this as a tourist who got taken advantage of, but as someone well versed in Puerto Rican cuisine, etiquette, and honesty. I arrived yesterday with my 91 year old grandfather, aunt, mother, father, and boyfriend. They seated us at a table that had a large bucket on one side of it, so there were four people sitting on one side, and 2 on the other. It made no sense because we wanted to catch up and spend quality time together. We were told the bucket was there to catch the water from the air conditioner. It is almost impossible to have a conversation with a table set up like this. There were other open tables and arrangements could have been made to accommodate us. When we asked politely, because we again, wanted to be able to hear my grandfather talk and spend quality time together as a family, we were ridiculed and told that we were spending time together sitting at that table anyway. We tried to make the best of it, and ate the mediocre tasting food. Again, I'm from Isabela originally, and I know what good Puerto Rican food is. This is overpriced, mediocre food, but we went there on this occasion because we wanted to show my boyfriend the interior and because there were not a lot of other places open that evening. We have been here before so we knew what to expect. When it came time to pay the bill- we paid in cash. My mother had inserted a 100 dollar bill and the tip in the folding card and gave it back to pay. We gathered our things, and then, next thing we know we are told that we are 100 dollars short. Both my mother and father saw that the 100 dollars were put in the folding card to pay; and because we were going out to eat, my mother had already counted how much cash she was taking to the restaurant. There was no mistake on or end, and we have witnesses to this. My mother let them know that she had put the 100 dollars in, and they insisted that this was not true, although it was actually a fact that they were incorrect. ****Be warned: someone there stealing money from the customers. There is no other way to say it. Do not go here unless you want to be treated poorly and want your money to be stolen from you.****** read more

This is an amazing hole in the wall spot. If you drive too fast you will miss it. We were immediately greeted and told our wait time was about 15 minutes. The waiters were dressed in typical Puerto Rican clothing. The place is decorated with items that were used in the house from back in the days. I ordered the Mofongo relleno de churrasco. The menu is simple and short. I hate going to restaurants with a menu the size of a book. The food came at a decent time and when I tell you the flavor was spot on. It was one of the most delicious Mofongo I've had in the island. For dessert I had flan de plátano which I've never had and to my surprise was really good. What a pleasure it is to find yourself driving around a new city and run into such a wonderful spot. We arrive at this restaurant right before they closed after a long day in San Juan. Not being from Puerto Rico we didn't know what to expect. All I can say is, Thank You! We were treated with such kindness and care. I went with a group of 6 girls, all from different nationalities, only one Puerto Rican. Our server, young pretty lady dressed in their folkloric dress, was very informative and answered all 200 questions we had about the menu. They stayed open for us and the food was exactly what we wanted-delicious authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I strongly recommend this hidden gem. I went site seeing and I bumped into this place on my way back to San Juan, too hungry to wait. I had a grilled (a la plancha) chicken, with habichuelas (beans) and rice. Also, they added a side of garlic sauce. The food was a big portion and very tasty and well done chicken. The place was super cute. The ambience was nice, very cozy and family oriented. The prices for the portions was great! The service was good but our food took a while thats the only thing but the place was full too. I would recommend it just keep in mind you have to have patience to wait a while. The food is very traditional from the island. Drinks i wish they mojitos they said they only carry house sangria tasted it, too sweet so I didnt have it ( I had a sample). Overall good experience. read more

This was a great find very close to me. Our server did not speak English but they accommodated us very quickly and explained the ENTIRE menu. There is a true family-like feeling in this restaurant, and you'll be fully immersed in Puerto Rican culture. I recommend the house special mofongo, it's a seafood variation. Found this delightful traditional Puerto Rican restaurant last night. Small dining room can get a little noisy but it all works. After considering many choices, I ordered the Chuleta Can Can which is an excellent, very generous portion of pork chop that is fried just before serving; it was still quite moist (a challenge for can can); side dish of beans and rice was very good and the waiter was kind enough to provide a small side of "arroz con guandales", arguably even better than the traditional beans and rice. My wife really enjoyed an aranita with shrimp and mashed plantains. Young waiter worked hard to please two old folks. Strongly recommended. read more
