I like El Patron. It was a nice find. Being a regular customer however, I've noticed the service has really gone downhill over the last six months. Not bad service, but apparently not enough help. The folks there bust their butts. The food is great. I always get the mocajete. It has shrunk significantly and it seems there is a less accomplished cook, but it is still a buy at $19.95 Great little restaurant. Love the grande beer in the red clay mug. Local here we have a Mexican restaurant closer to home but pass it up almost 90% of the time to come here. This last time we went we tried something new that I would have never thought to order and we absolutely loved it. Top check margaritas were great and we even had their table side guacamole, to which my six year old tried for the first time and DEVOURED it. I stopped here due to I-10 traffic and because I figured it would be faster than the Shed. This huge plate of food "Lindos" was enough for 3 meals. It's like all the fajita sizzling a over rice. And a small guac tasty and perfect chips. Plus the staff are sweet and efficient, and the tables are painted like artwork and the chairs and booths are nice and solid. Friendly, prompt service and a generalized "comfortable " setting. I had a frozen mango margarita which was magnificent and a shredded chicken burrito that was large and filling for just $16. My family and I just arrived to Mississippi from Florida to embark on a road trip to California when we were needing to find a stop to get some food before getting back on the road. We stopped into El Patron and IMMEDIATELY was greeted by a gentleman at the front who then brought us to our booth (the receipt said Eduardo) and brought to our table Chips/salsa/queso dip. After our orders were placed our meals arrived to our tables so quickly... I almost was worried about how quick but everything tasted so great. Service was pretty awful. We went on a Saturday night but it was not busy at all. Our waitress seemed like she really just needed to take a deep breath and calm down. She handed us our paper menus and instantly asked if we were ready to order. When she came back about 10minutes later she said "see, this is why I wanted you to order earlier". I very much felt like she just completely blamed the wait on us. We have never been before and so she also seemed thrown off when my husband asked about the beer selection since there was just a limited food menu printed out on computer paper. Another social group with which I play used this place on a monthly basis for our meeting. I usually wouldn't write a review of this establishment: if you've had one taco salad, you've had them all. I mean, seriously, "Mexican" food in this area is essentially the same 5 or 6 ingredients, just pick your tortilla wrapping. I envision about 8 bubbling pots of stuff back there in the kitchen on a burner.... just pick your shell. I mean, how does one expect it to come back out in 20 seconds after you order it? You think Madam Cleo is back there? Didn't think so. That being said.... Their food is good. I've famously said I tend to be more "weighty" on service and atmosphere than the actual food but all elements combine here to give one a good dining experience. We've seen this place easily fifty times as it is next to our favorite Pho place and have always wondered. We are kicking ourselves for not having tried El Patron sooner. I'm not a fan of cheese dip but this was very tasty and came out in a large bowl. It was a huge amount for the price. I had the Supreme Burrito with steak which had a very good taste. The kids had steak burrito with red sauce and a steak quesadilla. With drinks an awesome tamale and a couple of Negra Modelos the bill was $56. Service was quick, friendly and attentive. Had dinner here on Monday, July 30th. Ordered the Tortilla Soup (listed in the Soups & Salad section). It was enough for an entree. If you order this, don't order anything else or let the entire table enjoy it with you. This was a completely different preparation than I have ever seen. The tortilla strips were the color of the soup rather than on top of the soup, still crisp. Also, the soup was so hot I couldn't eat it. I believe this item was previously portioned and heated in the microwave. Would not order again. Also, had the Tamales. Pretty good and a bargain @ $2.00 each. Listed in the "sides" section. Our waitress was very good with only a couple of "hiccups ". Having lived in Mexico I probably would not return but perhaps this is the standard for Mexica food in Mississippi. read more
