Pains me to say it but I come here a lot less than I used to. The prices they charge now aren't worth it for the quality

Taco City - Shrimp dinner

So I pulled in this parking lot to turn around and realized it was a Mexican restaurant, which sounded much better than Cracker Barrel anyway. A very nice discovery! The dining room is bright, clean, and cheerfully decorated. It is also much larger inside than it appears from the outside. The menu is much larger than I had expected. So many choices, ranging from authentic options like tongue to vegetarian options. I ordered a cheese enchilada dinner with sides of guacamole and bean dip. I loved the guacamole, it had a good texture and was a little spicy, definitely some jalapeño. Beans and rice were excellent. The rice had good flavor. My enchiladas were tasty. Servings are very generous. Prices are reasonable. I'll be happy to stop here for lunch or dinner when I am traveling between Indianapolis and Louisville

You enter into a typical, colorful dining area and we were treated and seated promptly. We ordered a couple of Coronas. I tried a Familiar, a dark Corona. Full bodied, great flavor. I'll have to look for it at Total Wines. Our chips and salsa came quickly. We really liked the salsa and asked if it was made in house. Nope. It's Julio's from the jar. They do make a mild, medium and hot house salsa. The hot, a combo of jalapeño and Serrano didn't taste hot at first, but snuck up on me after a few minutes. My fajita dinner was served up as hot as I've ever had. In fact, I couldn't hold the tortillas for several minutes! A bit on the greasy side, but the chicken was served as good sized chunks. Lots of peppers & grilled onions. Interestingly, no guacamole is served with the fajita fixins. My wife ordered a shrimp dish, again, a tad greasy and slightly overdone shrimp. Her biggest complaint was the onions being over charred. Not a problem for me. I thought the grilled veggies and "grease" gave both dishes great flavor. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to return. But I would ask them to go a tad easier on the oil.

I wish I could join the chorus of 4 and 5 star reviews. Looking for a restaurant with atmosphere?…read more You won't find it here. My first warning was the decrepit sign over the door in a dilapidated strip center. But, as the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover." The food was good. Not great. My usual order is fajitas, this time a chicken, steak, and chicken combo. The plate was served sizzling. Served with 3 small tortillas and the usual fixin's. El Mexicano doesn't serve any beans other than refried, so, no option for black beans, pinto or borracho. The shrimp in the dish were perfect, the chicken was dried out and there were about 6 little strips of steak. The grilled onions and peppers were very good. My wife's shrimp dish was very salty. She prefers the interpretation of Shrimp Mexicana at others Mexican restaurants. And for good measure, because we asked for some lime to squeeze on the shrimp and they tacked on $2 to the bill. But what really resulted in my barely average review was the cleanliness of El Mexicano; or rather, the lack of it. You'll notice a yellow bucket that hangs on the wall in the dining room, yes, in full sight of diners. I witnessed a server drop something on the floor, grab a cloth from the bucket and clean the floor. Then, she returned the cleaning cloth to the bucket. Moments later, another server used the same cloth to clean tables! The health department would have a hissy fit if they saw this. Worse, when I mentioned this to the manager, he was indifferent. I know he understood me, he just didn't care. If the manager is so indifferent to such an obvious health hazard, I can't fathom what goes on in the kitchen. El Mexicano is a "one and done" for us.

The inside is somewhat small, but clean. The server was very friendly and service was prompt. The painted art on the furniture and walls was excellent. I ordered a chicken bowl with rice, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and on the side was red enchilada sauce. The chicken was wonderfully seasoned and I only was able to eat half of it. My husband ordered the Texana fajitas, which was a trio of meats (steak, shrimp and chicken). My daughter ordered a Grand burrito. We all left satisfied. I did not get a photo of the hub's or daughter's food before they started devouring them, but I did get a picture of my bowl.

Delicious salsa seasoned well with a good amount of cilantro to give it a nice flavor and just enough heat to keep in interesting. Chips were served warm, fresh and crispy-crunchy. They have a very wide menu featuring a great array of Mexican specialties along with the more traditional Mexican-American fare that most people are used to. Since this was our first visit, we played it safe and each tried a good old reliable quesadilla; one grilled chicken, one grilled steak. Both were HUGE and delicious. The steak was seasoned nicely and was still juicy despite being cut small. The chicken I had was flavorful and juicy, as well, made even better with the addition of some the the house salsa. I had rice as a side item and it was probably the best I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I'm not sure what they season it with, but I could eat a whole bowl of it by itself. My wife had a Coke; I stuck with water. As an added bonus, when it came time to pay the bill, we were told the older couple behind us had picked up our check. To whomever you are---thank you. We'll definitely be back. P.S. One caveat; the place CAN get noisy when filled with....millennials...who have no idea what an "inside voice" is.

So, we simply had to stop in. It's interesting to note there's a large sign on the street, but no signage on the actual building. We were seated promptly and drinks were ordered. Chips and salsa were served. Thick, crisp chips and a hearty salsa. Not spicy, but good flavor. My wife ordered a taco salad. A substantial shell, stuffed with rice, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, chicken and topped with cheese and avocado. She brought half of it home. I ordered two flour tacos, one with chicken, one with steak. The tortillas were a bit of a disappointment. They were thick and barely heated. But the tortillas were stuffed. Chicken or beef, lettuce, tomato, and some grilled onions. Tasty. The only "fail" was the side of guacamole. To my taste, it was bland, lacking garlic, lime, any real seasoning.
