    Chicken Fajitas
    Ed S.

El Nopal and I got off to a rocky start. I placed a to go order from the one on Riverside Drive and was less than impressed. Since then I've been "dragged" into other locations and have tried to keep an open mind. This time we hit the New Albany location for lunch. My wife and I were promptly seated and a server was johnny on the spot with water, chips & salsa. My wife went with shrimp fajitas and I went with chicken fajitas. Both came with a large side of fixins-rice, beans, guacamole & pico de gallo. We skipped the sour cream and swapped refried beans for black beans. Our lunch was served sizzling on cast iron skillets. The shrimp were perfectly grilled and the chicken was equally well prepared. I do wish El Nopal would cut chicken in strips rather than mini chunks. Still, the flavor was excellent. Both dishes were served with lots of grilled onions and The lunch portion was substantial and with take home, we had enough for another lunch. El Nopal may not be my #1 choice for Mexican food, but sometimes being #2 isn't such a bad thing.

There are a lot of Mexican establishments in the area. But in a pause always gonna be a cut above the rest in my opinion. This place offers great chips and salsa cheese dip the pig old burrito with hamburger steak on the inside which is always fantastic love their salsa they're hot sauce is where it's at and it is solid all around. Always get a good quick service for sure and the prices are pretty darn good so this is the go to place for sure

Today is Cinco de Mayo and I was feeling up to a delicious authentic Mexican meal. This restaurant has a variety of various Mexican dishes and albeit is rather pricey for their platters, which range from $19-$29 and appetizers from $8-$22. Also surprisingly I didn't find any sort of dessert at all unless there is a separate menu for that but I was never told that by my server, more on that later. The environment is one you'd expect of any authentic Mexican restaurant, a very colorful decor with lots of Mexican decor spread throughout with some Mexican music playing in the background to set the ambiance of this establishment granted I was sitting in the background of the seating area and couldn't hear this music if I were sitting in the front. On this visit, being my first, I decided to try the Nachos Delicias (Queso, tomato, onions, cilantro, sour cream and choice of chicken, chorizo and steak) I requested no onions and steak. I also tried their Quesadilla El Jefe Jeff (Stuffed with cheese, steak, shrimp, chicken, chorizo, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and sour cream) I requested no onions. The nachos were really nothing too terribly special outside of just being put in a somewhat fancy bowl to make them look or appear better than they were. They didn't taste too bad outside of finding the steak to not really be all that flavorful or seasoned. I feel for the price which was $18.50, that it could've been more for what I paid for. The quesadilla was absolutely worth it and was quite filling. Definitely the star of this meal however I was disappointed to find onion in my meal when I specifically requested there to not be. Outside of that is was quite good and something I'd order again. My biggest issue was there was only one server working and of all days it was on Cinco de Mayo which you as a Mexican restaurant should expect to be busy in which they were. Our server never once stopped to ask if we needed anything, no offer of dessert (which I am still not sure they offer) or even to ask if I wanted another drink. I don't see myself going out of my way to come here albeit it wasn't awful but the price for things was too much in my opinion. I feel that I've had better food for a lower price at other authentic Mexican restaurants. So just keep this in mind when deciding to stop here.

I wish I could join the chorus of 4 and 5 star reviews. Looking for a restaurant with atmosphere?…read more You won't find it here. My first warning was the decrepit sign over the door in a dilapidated strip center. But, as the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover." The food was good. Not great. My usual order is fajitas, this time a chicken, steak, and chicken combo. The plate was served sizzling. Served with 3 small tortillas and the usual fixin's. El Mexicano doesn't serve any beans other than refried, so, no option for black beans, pinto or borracho. The shrimp in the dish were perfect, the chicken was dried out and there were about 6 little strips of steak. The grilled onions and peppers were very good. My wife's shrimp dish was very salty. She prefers the interpretation of Shrimp Mexicana at others Mexican restaurants. And for good measure, because we asked for some lime to squeeze on the shrimp and they tacked on $2 to the bill. But what really resulted in my barely average review was the cleanliness of El Mexicano; or rather, the lack of it. You'll notice a yellow bucket that hangs on the wall in the dining room, yes, in full sight of diners. I witnessed a server drop something on the floor, grab a cloth from the bucket and clean the floor. Then, she returned the cleaning cloth to the bucket. Moments later, another server used the same cloth to clean tables! The health department would have a hissy fit if they saw this. Worse, when I mentioned this to the manager, he was indifferent. I know he understood me, he just didn't care. If the manager is so indifferent to such an obvious health hazard, I can't fathom what goes on in the kitchen. El Mexicano is a "one and done" for us.

The decor was fun with painted murals and designs covering every surface. I especially liked all the "climbing men" stationed around at various places. Agave & Rye Tequila and Bourbon Hall is mainly a taco place with a few other menu items. The tacos are not your usual run of the mil tacos and there are many delicious variations to choose from. Being a non-drinker, I can't give you any info on the alcohol, but they seem to be pretty proud of it. We did happy hour, 5$ mocktails, Pick 3 Chips and Dips, 15$, and the Three Taco Flight, 12$. It was plenty of food for the two of us and Eveything was delicious. We left just enough room for the huge piece of Chocolate Cake, $14. We ate the bottom two tiers and took the rest home. Yum. Kyondre (Dre) was our server. What a delightful young man. He was very helpful and pleasant, while checking in on us frequently. IMHO, Agave & Rye is well worth a visit.

The pick your 3 mini tacos is a good experiment with the different flavor options. Yoda taco- play on kung pao chicken- has the heat from the sauce, while the egg fried rice holds it together with the crunch of the peanuts. For a plain chicken taco - I would suggest the Chipotle Chika - honey comes thru with the chicken while the queso brings the rich and creamy flavors Service is lacking a bit- and hard to get refills on drinks. Overall a solid 3/5 for a small local restaurant.
