2-4-1 Margarita
Shan K.

(4 stars) We recently tried El Mezcal Restaurant and overall had a really great experience! First off--the 2-for-1 margaritas were delicious. Definitely a highlight and worth it if you're going to check this place out. We started with the ground beef & cheese dip, which was just okay. Honestly, we somehow missed the queso option on the first page of the menu, and I'm pretty sure we would have liked that a lot better. Lesson learned for next time! The chips, though--SO good. Super thin, perfectly crispy, and just the right amount of salt. Paired with their homemade salsa, we kept going back for more. We actually came specifically for the molcajete after finding it on Google, and it did not disappoint. The portion was HUGE--easily enough for leftovers for both me and my husband the next day, which made it a great value. The sauce was really flavorful, and we dove right into the chicken, shrimp, and steak. The only surprise was that this was the first molcajete we've ever had that included hot dog pieces as the pork. They looked good, just not something we personally tried--but everything else in the dish was really tasty. Service was great too--our waitress was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Also, as someone in marketing, I really appreciated the immediate interaction and reshares of my photos. It's a small detail, but it shows they truly take pride in their business and value their customers. Overall, a really solid spot with great portions, tasty drinks, and good service. We'd definitely come back (and try that queso next time!).

Good food, service, & value. But the ambiance involves music & karaoke so loud & abrasive that you are unable to have a conversation.

In fact, when we left all the booths were occupied plus half the other tables in the middle of the room. They gave us chips and salsa to start. The salsa was just okay. They had a number of lunch specials. We ordered from the combo section. I ordered a chalupa with ground beef without onions and chose the regular beans (vs the refried ones). I had to look up what a chalupa was... and basically it's a softer more bread like wrap. It was fried, so it was crispy on the outside and soft inside. The portion was large with melted cheese. Alongside was a small scoop of sour cream and one of guacamole. A mound of yellow rice and a small taco shell cup of red beans rounded out the plate. It was good, but fairly plain tasting. Adding some salt and salsa helped a bit. My husband got a combo with two different options. He wound up taking one part of his lunch home. His meal came with refried beans and yellow rice. I'm glad we came to try them. Now we know. Read less

From the outside, you wouldn't necessarily expect much, but the food was SO delicious! The portions are generous, everything we ordered was flavorful and fresh, and the atmosphere was fun and welcoming. Even better, the prices are really affordable for the amount and quality of food you get. We had such a great experience and will definitely be back. If you haven't tried Toreros yet, definitely add it to your list!

We ordered a few cocktails, the El Segundo Classico, a classic margarita, and the Oaxaca Peach Old Fashioned made of blanco tequila and a bit of mezcal, very refreshing to start off with. Our servers recommended a few different menu items. The Pimento Cheese Elote Dip small plate was delicious. We then moved on to the tacos - the Brisket Burnt Ends, the Chicharron Ceviche, and the Cali Fish (my favorite). The Cali Fish was nicely fried and just a bit of heat and slightly sweet slaw. Also tried the Birria Tacos and the Burrito, both great. We loved sitting outside in front of the restaurant. There are few artist studios across the parking lot. I thought El Segundo was a solid 4.5/5.

I will say they could use a little better lighting, as the place does look a bit dated, but maybe that's the look they're going for. I've heard this restaurant has been here for about two years, and somehow we didn't know about it until a few weeks ago. Onto the main dishes! I had the Vaca Frita with white rice, black beans, and maduros, and everything was packed with great flavor. My wife had the Birria Tacos, and she said they were excellent. Of course, I had to try the consomme and what a mistake... because now I'm hooked line and sinker. It was so packed with flavor that I even started dipping my Vaca Frita in it. This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, and I mean that in the best possible way. Don't miss out on it! I've seen some people complaining about the gratuity already being included on the check. Stop whining and tip what you should. If you have a problem with tipping, don't go out to eat at a restaurant with waitress service. The additional tip option at the bottom of the receipt is simply there for those who want to leave the full 20% or more. If you don't feel they deserve anything extra, then leave it as is. We will definitely be coming back. The scary part is just how local and convenient this place is. Ha!

However, I know from traveling that some of the best spots are ones that appear to be a hole in the wall. I walked in, very cute inside! Staff was welcoming and I cozied right up at the bar to wait for my friend. I was immediately brought chips and salsa and a cold beer. We ended up sitting at a high top and our waitress suggested that I try either carne asada from the Mexican menu or Vaca Frita from the Cuban menu. I love me some carne asada but I was intrigued but this 'fried shredded beef' that was marinated in mole and cooked in a hot skillet until crispy. She suggested sweet plantains to go with it and white rice with beans which is traditional Cuban (instead of yellow rice). IT WAS FABULOUS! It was crispy on the outside and juicy. The mole was flavorful but not spicy and i appreciated that the meat was not dripping in sauce. My dinner date ordered chicken tamales which were seasoned in a Cuban style with yellow rice. She is used to Mexican tamales but said these really hit the spot! The only blemish on the nice was her second margarita which was the cucumber one which she didn't like at all. However, the first one she ordered (pictured) which was a different flavor was a show stopper.
