This was the most hoppin' spot in Tifton with the exception of the Publix water aisle a day before the hurricane. Seriously though, El Matate was an excellent choice for Mexican. The parking lot was packed, and we snagged the last table before the lobby started to fill up with people waiting, and the service was quick and friendly. They had some big ass margaritas which were cheap on Wednesdays. The crunchy taco (a must at any Mexican restaurant) was pretty basic, but also pretty good for being basic. And the fajita burrito with steak, chicken and shrimp was big and filling. Tony's tacos also looked good but I didn't get to try it. I think there were a few Mexican options in Tifton, and we only tried this one, but if I was ever back in town, I'd probably end up here again, but get there early enough to beat the rush! read more

Outstanding restaurant! Got the Tifton Burrito. Stuffed, and I mean STUFFED, with huge juicy shrimp, tender steak, sauté fresh veggies, including squash and zucchini, perfectly seasoned rice, and beans all wrapped in a amazing delicious flour tortilla draped in creamy white cheese. We were famished after a long day on the road and chose this place based on other reviews. We weren't disappointed. We arrived a little after 5:30 PM and the place was hopping. We were able to get seated but we got one of the last booths. They have quite an extensive menu. We both had a beer to drink but the drink special for Saturday evening is a pitcher of margaritas for $14.99. Had we not been so tired... We both ordered burritos. I got the supreme and my wife had the Jarecho. They were huge and very good. They don't come with rice and refried beans like most places. I ordered a side of Mexican rice but couldn't eat it all. I could have done without it. This place is decorated in authentic Mexican decor and while it was nice, it wasn't anything fancy. Fluorescent lights set an atmosphere that says you are here to eat and move on. It isn't intimate but suits the business. Our food arrived shortly after we ordered it and all told we spent less than an hour here. We'll stop in again when we are in the area. read more

Great place to stop on your rode trip. Large petitions, tasty for all. My 11 year old and my 80 yesterday old mother including my wife and I were very satisfied. Bean and cheese burrito for the young one, taco chicken salad for mom, enchiladas Verdes and I had mole poblano. Each dish was much better than any fast food. The place was packed with locals including a birthday party. The service was above average however, the manger is amazing. We would eat here often and I would change one thing. Nothing really exciting, but their lunch menu prices are pretty cheap, and it's probably a better choice than the boring chain restaurant options off this exit. The chips for the chips & salsa were burnt but the salsa was ok. I was kinda bummed because I was looking forward to a small cup of some kind of Mexican soup to soothe my road trip ravaged tummy, but they only had a large bowl of soup for $8.99 so I got a chile relleno that was only $2.99 and loaded with meat but a bit bland. My friends and I found this place by chance, we were on out way back home to Florida and stopped on the way to eat. And I have to say this is hands down one of the BEST Mexican places I've been to, and im a regular to Mexican restaurants. The portions are incredible amazing. The food is delicious with just the right necessity seasoning. The margaritas are great! And the prices are amazing! Too bad this place is far from home. Many times cruised through Tipton and never stopped. For some reason, I did this time and discovered a cute little place with decent food. I had the Burrito Grande (Hot!) ($8.99) A big flour tortilla stuffed with rice, beans, pico de gallo, hot sauce and choice of pork, steak or grilled chicken. It was tasty and, FINALLY, it actually had some serious heat to it. Most places that warn you about spicy food are really catering to the folks who think Taco Bell hot sauce is out of this world. THIS place really socks it to you with the heat and those gigantic margaritas really washed it down good. I usually eye with suspicion a Mexican restaurant with gringos working the floor - but my gringo was friendly, cool and got the food out nice and quick. read more

I eat here at least once a week with family and friends, since the week they opened years ago. The servers are interactive and that is what is locals love. This place always feel like comfort . It is a Tex Mex not a true authentic but it is amazing. Like all restaurants they may have an off day but they have many more on days. The only major downside is the parking is tight. I don't eat at but one other Mexican place in town and that is once every few months. This is my go to spot! Fajitas and enchilads are so good! read more

The mix seemed more like neon green Kool-aid than anything else. Their entrees are reasonably priced but poorly executed and tasteless. After the first bite I re-grouped, scrapped the meat filling out and tried to salvage a meal. It didn't work. The staff treats your like family and you're greeted with a jolly hello as you enter the doors. The booths are large enough for 4-8 adults depending on which you sit in. The colorful chairs and tables really are a unique touch. All hand painted and detailed beautifully. The Maria's special, Tifton Burrito or Texas Fajita Nachos are all our top choices whenever we go. While my husband's food was well seasoned, they use dark meat for their enchiladas and burritos. When eating chicken based dishes, I always prefer white meat.
