Well, I found this small little Mexican place in the neighborhood. It was very casual. Seat yourself. It wasn't crowded. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu. The feature lobster taco was great. It was a crunchy taco with great filings . The show stopper smashed burger quesadilla. This is worth coming back for. The tres leche bread pudding was a huge no for me. Note to self, they don't take stuff off the ticket . The margarita was a good time. read more

A Day Out the 9-0-1 Way! So yesterday while celebrating 901 I decided to try thr brick and mortar location. I tried El Mero Taco a few years ago as a food truck visit and I enjoyed it...so I had to spin the block again. To celebrate 901 day, El Mero Taco had 2/9.01 southern fried chicken tacos and 9.01 margaritas! So I had to try them! But I couldn't stop there. Before ordering I smelt the aroma or bbq so I had to see what was on the menu...and beef brisket quesadilla had to be a try as well. This was our first time dining here and I gotta say we were impressed. The service was excellent as was the food. I would highly recommend the mole fries, they were flavorful and well portioned. This was our first time and we were very pleased! We sat outside enjoying the crisp fall air as we sipped our frozen margaritas which were strong! Our server was Cara and she was kind, knowledgeable and provided great service. The queso was fresh & hot, the smash burger taco was delicious and the fish taco was just as tasty. An update. Haven't been for a year or so, and given that one of the trucks blew an engine, we went as a show of support. Also to revisit that incredible bread pudding. All told, things felt...different. Same inside, a few new high top tables were a nice touch. The music wasn't really my vibe, though the odd song out, "Electric Feel" by MGMT was appreciated. The young lady staffing the register was delightful. Hard to tell if there was table service; it was kind of back and forth with her checking on us and grabbing our own silverware, drink refills, etc. Nonetheless, she was great. The food has taken a step back. Gone were the albondigas (meatball) tacos, replaced by tinga and collards (not much compliment between the two: seamless Delta southern/ Mexican fusion had been EMT's calling card hitherto, the seams were oddly present here. Also had the taco with the bologna...it was interesting given the texture combined with the spicy heat, but I swore I was eating beef with tofu at first. The brisket quesadilla was still very, very good; just a touch off from its former glory. The grits were, taste-wise, as delicious as ever but the consistency was a bit runny. The steak and potato tacos were still good, but the potatoes kind of withered and the beef just didn't have that pop that it used to. I couldn't help but miss the chorizo options as well. Finally, the bread pudding. My death row dish. As has been consistent above, still really good. But, the portion was not as intimidating as it used to be; the bread good and dense, but the volume was a thinner slice. Nor were the edges as crispy/crunchy. Thats why EMT's bread pudding was the premier bread pudding in town: texture contrast, depth of flavor, sweet, and temperature contrast. It wasn't eating, it was exploring and being surprised by each bite. This version had a few bites of that, the taste still the damned-good-same, but once you've been to the mountain top, you also know when you're not. I'm chalking this up to an off night and having to focus in other areas with recent adversity. I still love this place. But if this was anywhere else it'd be a 3 star. For now, and until it returns to the 5 star razzle-dazzle that I know it is, 4 stars is justified given the adjustments to the menu and feel. read more

I don't honestly know how we've managed to miss this great little place in Cordova. The interior has a hip vibe, and our server was very friendly. We really enjoyed the unusual mix of the offerings and ordered 5 different types of tacos - don't hate, but the cauliflower ones are really good! My husband especially enjoyed the brisket. The corn riblits are over the top. That sauce is to die for! I really only have two complaints. The food is good, but I think it is overpriced. The food and drinks were very tasty and well seasoned. The melting of southern American cuisine and the Oaxaca, Mexico fusion is something you don't see often, but it just works so well! My only gripe was that it was way too busy for there to only be one server and one bartender during the brunch hours. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by the wait staff who suggested personal recommendations from the menu. Some friends and I went here a couple of nights ago. We have wanted to try this place due to the reviews of the tacos online. We ordered Queso, and all of us ordered the fish tacos. Got some margaritas to go with the meal. The food was very bland and lacked flavor. If I closed my eyes, I wouldn't have known what type of spice or fish I was eating. The queso dip was grainy, and chips were oily. The service was lacking. One person was working the front and the bar. It seems that if you wanted faster service, the bar was the place to go. Secondly, the cook was also the server. When he approached our table, he started complaining he was ready to go home and get off work. I thought that was unprofessional. The ambiance was just blah. It looks like an open warehouse with tables and a bar. Lacks decorations or if it's really a taco spot. This is what I ordered in the pictures. To start, we ordered margaritas with extra salt on the rim. Not only did it take way too long for the drinks to show up(the bartender made each margarita one at a time and a shaker), when the bartender delivered the drinks they only had about 1/3 of the rim covered with salt. We asked if this was extra salt and she said yes.. we did asked if we could get glasses with salt all the way on the rim that we would transfer the margaritas into the new glasses with salt all the way around the rim. Upon our request, the bartender started badmouthing our request from behind the bar, loud enough that we could hear it, and refused to meet our request, until we literally walked up to the bar and ask her. We spoke to the bar manager, who was very understanding and said he was discussing the issue with her. He did comp the drinks (not what we wanted), which was very professional of him, but we will never go back again because of the attitude of the bartender. read more

This review is a tale of 2 cities. Two of our party go there weekly (one craves the Smash Burger Quesadilla - a direct quote!), while we've been a few times and this was a first for the others. We started with the ubiquitous queso Blanco and Guacamole dishes. Then, between us we had a good sampling of the tacos (Blackened Shrimp, Tinga and Collards, Smoked habanero Shrimp), and Quesadillas (Smoked Brisket - 3 of us, Steak and Potatoes). A couple of us thought there was just a tad too much cheese in their (Smoked Brisket) sandwhiches, though the flavor of the brisket was quite good - and we both felt odd about complaining about too much cheese. The spice - even of those with 3 pepper images - was well within tolerance. Service was another split. A couple minor complaints were heard about our waitress (brusque? slow?), though I didn't agree. Ambiance is 'young'. It's 4-page menu is 3 pages of alcohol! It's a bit of a maze getting there, though it's less than a football field from Germantown road. From food, service, to ambiance I highly recommend El Mero Taco. The taste is flavorful... just think southern twist meets Mexican authentic dishes. The portions were filling, which is excellent. This is what I had: smoked brisket bowl which had guacamole sauce, cilantro lime rice and black beans, and a blackened shrimp taco with a flavorful salsa on top. I had a mezcal passion fruit cocktail list that Layla made so beautifully. Get a chance to meet Roosevelt as well, he will give you the run down on some great wine selections. We read signs till eventually we figured we should seat ourselves first, and then went up to the cashier to ask for menus. And that's when we were told to come back up to order. Ordered 4 Southern Fried Chicken tacos, 1 Andouille Chicken, and 1 Shrimp Habanero. We also ordered a queso dip with chorizo. Along with two beers. The food came out very quickly. Nothing out of the ordinary about the tacos - I would say they remind me of combinations made at Torchy's. The shrimp taco was the best. There was a very strong smoky flavor from the chicken taco that I wasn't able to handle. And my friend really enjoyed the southern fried chicken taco but was pretty stuffed after 2. Went to check this once food truck turned restaurant with a friend of mine for lunch during a week day a few weeks ago and I can still taste that quesadilla as my mouth waters for another one! I ended up sorta creating my own quesadilla with the chimichurri grilled chicken, Monterey cheese, onions and chipotle crema. The Kiss my Aztec cocktail was on point.. no over sweetened mix either. Perfect amount of mixers to alcohol. The servings are appropriate, not really meant for sharing and the prices are a little more than your average Mexican food restaurant but you definitely get what you pay for! It's a cute little spot. The outdoor patio is nice. Close to Our school so we meet there before games to grab a bite. The chips and guac are AWESOME. (Better than most Mexican places Ives been). The drinks are average, not my favorite but the guac makes up for it. There is bartender/waiter that works there that is super friendly and tries really hard to please. We dropped in here one night to try something different while in memphis. This one is in kind of an odd spot off the main street where we wouldn't have found it if we hadn't looked it up online. It was really good when we went. They have a decent amount of local beers on tap for as small of a restaurant as it is. The margaritas we had was easily the best marg we have had in the memphis area. I ordered the mole fries. They tasted great, but would have liked some meat on them. We also got the cowboy candy, and the smoked salmon dip which were both delicious. The ambience is good for what it is, but it is a small joint with a few tables and a bar. Nothing too crazy. The place was kind of empty when we were there, which is kind of dissapointing because there are much worse restaurants around that were more busy. We will probably be back here, especially if someone in the group wants a good marg. read more

PROS Decor: The decor is cute and colorful. Staff: Ty and Jacob were great! They were super friendly! God bless them! Food: They do have lunch specials if you want to try it out but don't want to spend a lot of money. Food: The queso was soooo good! CONS 1. Food: I was not impressed by the food. I went twice. The first time I got a power bowl with Habanero Shrimp. It wasn't super yummy nor horrible. It was just ok. The second time I tried the smoked chicken taco, which was not delicious at all, a shrimp taco I believe, which again was ok, and the fried chicken taco (which the waitress brought me after sending the smoked chicken back). The fried chicken taco was also just ok. It was the best option of everything that I had though. 2. Outdoor Seating: The outdoor seating area is a nice place to sit, but I think that there needs to be an umbrella to block the sun at each table. Unfortunately, there are some drinks and items on their menu that are only available in the summer... (Cauliflower ceviche and their frozen alcoholic beverages included) I definitely feel like they should update their menu based on this. Other than that, the servers were very friendly! Our food came out in less than 5 minutes once! I tried the roasted cauliflower taco. For some reason this isn't on their menu. I asked for cauliflower ceviche, and the waitress informed me of this taco. It was amazing! I love how perfectly cooked the cauliflower is, and the pickled onions compliment the savory flavor perfectly! I also tried the Veggies with Green Mole Taco. This is definitely my favorite menu item! The green mole sauce is fantastic and beautiful in every way! Even if you're not vegan/vegetarian, you should definitely give this taco a try! The guacamole was pretty great! It was a little heavy on tomatoes and not as chunky with avocados as I would've preferred. I still really enjoyed it, and I would definitely order it again! Of course I had to try a cocktail! I tried the piña morada and loved it! I was going for something sweet and unique, and this did not disappoint! Overall, really enjoyed my experiences at El Mero Taco! The menu does need to be updated, but the flavors are crafted perfectly! I'm also in love with their prices for vegan items! I'm a sucker for tacos, so when I heard this place had the best in town, I hopped in my car and proceeded to El Mero Taco. Upon arriving, I was amazed at how stunning this restaurant is - literally aesthetically pleasing! The guy helping us was an absolute sweetheart & was patient with us since it was our first time visiting. We ended up ordering the Southern Fried Chicken taco, the Verde Smoked Chicken taco, chips & queso, and two drinks. When he hit us with, "Your total 51 DOLLARS" our jaws dropped. He laughed it off. So, you mean to tell me for FOUR tacos = 20 DOLLARS and two margaritas = 24 DOLLARS? We brushed it off and thought maybe the quality of their ingredients is what makes it good. Oh, boy were we wrong... As we got our food, it did not look appealing to us. The ingredients were slapped on flour tortillas, which looked like a hot mess. The Southern Fried Chicken was....ok..spiced well, but that's about it. However, the Verde Smoked Chicken...?! Absolutely disgusting. The smokey flavor was WAYYYYYY too powerful and didn't taste like chicken at all - which scared me half to death because I don't eat anything else, but chicken (meat-wise). The queso was pretty good, so that's the only thing that actually filled me up. The margaritas were very good, but the bartender didn't add strawberry to mine (don't know if they charged us for an additional flavor). I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, it is way too hyped up...for no reason. If I HAD to go back, I'd just go for one margarita and chips & queso. read more

The cheese grits were amazing! I also had the verde smoked chicken quesadilla. The flavor of the meat was out of this world! The smokiness makes a big difference. The chicken had a smoke flavor...but that was it. I don't know that I've ever had an unseasoned taco, and I don't want to experience that ever again.
