My friend found this place close to our hotel and we went on a saturday morning , we loved it so much, it was just beautiful and so much to see and eat. They have outside vendors and inside malls all very clean and many shopping options. We had a great michelada and explored the whole mercado. It felt very authentic just like being in the middle of mexico city. The food and store vendors were extremely sweet and friendly, we really enjoyed this part of our trip.

If you're looking for a tourist spot to go to in SA then come here. El Mercado is a staple, it hasn't really changed over the years other than prices. I don't recommend buying their overpriced Mexican merchandise as they know they hype those prices WAY more than what they get it for in Mexico...but I highly recommend the food, especially Pan Dulce from Mi Tierra. The street food is good. Music is good. It's just a nice spot to get out when visiting San Antonio.

I have the privilege of visiting San Antonio at least once a year. This has become a destination I MUST visit each time I come. I love the culture, beautiful colors, restaurants, and experience of this shopping complex. If you ever come this way, the El Mercado is a must!

When visiting San Antonio, the Mercado (Market Square) is one of those must see areas, along with the Riverwalk and the Alamo. Located on the west end of downtown San Antonio, the Mercado, or Market Square as it's known in English, has been a gathering place for street vendors since the early 1800's. In modern times, the street vendors are still present and you also have a myriad of shops to choose from selling T-shirts, hats, clothes and other tourist knickknacks. There are, however, other shops that sell exquisite jewelry, Mexican art work, and beautifully decorated home furnishings. There are also street vendors selling various foods. I love getting a couple of puffy tacos, a beer and 'un vaso de elote' - a cup of corn. They cut the corn off of the cob, put it in a cup and mix in butter, cream, paprika, lemon pepper and chili powder. It is DELICIOUS. For those craving something sweet, head over to Mi Tierra. They serve some of the best Mexican pastries you will find anywhere. Wonderful Mexican sweet breads and sweet empanadas. Next door is the haunted Milam Square. http://darkhaunts.com/TexasGhostStories/TheDevilsofMilamSquare.html I love San Antonio because there is always something going on here.

If you want a real taste of Mexico when in San Antone, El Mercado should definitely be of your list of places to visit! Huge variety of booths and stands offering items heche in Mexico, clothing, pottery, toys, jewelry...you name it - great variety - lots to look at! There are the outside vendors and also two large buildings that surround the market that are AC (very welcoming in the hotter months) and house several small shops. Most carry the same or similar items. Prices from one booth to the next can range from the difference of a few bucks to double the price - so beware. Shop around until you buy - just try to remember where you saw the item at the right price. As a general rule, outside vendors tend to be a little less expensive and are more likely to give you a cash discount. There are also several various food stands that offer gorditas, chicharon tacos, and lots of other goodies! If you never have before, be sure to get a cup of roasted corn "Mexican style" with mayo, butter, Cotija cheese, and chili powder. Really really good! Trust me! Oh, and if you'd like, grab a cold beer from one of the outside stores and feel free to walk about and enjoy. In addition to the food stands, there are a few restaurants at the market, including the very popular (always going to be a wait) Mi Tierra (open 24 hours a day. 365 days a year). On weekends the outside market is often filled with live Tejano music, dancers, the occasional "Mexican Elvis" spotting, and always great people watching! TIP: If you're not walking from a hotel, there's a $5 parking lot across the street or $7 in the garage.

My wife loves walking around and looking at everything...and I do mean everything, can't get her to walk with me but bring her to a place like this and let the marathon/games begin...I was limping by days end and she was still going strong...okay...i'm exaggerating, but only slightly. We bought some stuff we didn't need and some that will come in handy, the people were very helpful and friendly.

It was colorful and had lots of shops. Went on a hot day so didn't spend much time in the outside shops but did visit all the interior shops. Bought a few unique items. Great experience when it's not 100 degrees out

Not sure this is a must-see spot for visitors to San Antonio, but if you have a car, don't mind paying $10 for parking, and are heading to Mi Tierra Bakery, then El Mercado at Market Square is a famous shopping experience to check off your bucket list. It's billed as the largest Mexican Market in the U.S. and is filled with vendors selling over-priced gifts to tourists like leather belts and embroidered dresses. After about 5-minutes, it feels like every space is selling basically the same things. The people working at most of the booths and stores are friendly and have just one rule: Don't Take Pictures With The Hats! Put. That Sombrero. Down. Sombrero's for closers only.

It was truly one of the highlights of my trip and I would highly recommend visiting to anyone in the area, and I hope to go again in the future! The parking nearby was a short walk but nothing crazy, and once we got to the Market it was shaded very well and had such a variety of stands both inside and outside of the buildings which I loved. It was a little hot outside so it was nice to be able to rotate between both areas. There was also such a great mix of stores, restaurants, snack stands, and artisans and crafts throughout. We grabbed some aguas frescas to sip on while we explored and they were delicious and a great price for how big they were. We had a big breakfast but it would be nice to try some of the many lunch spots they had throughout the market. The stores had everything but I loved the amount of talavera pottery to choose from and stocked up as much as my suitcase would allow. Prices are super reasonable as well considering these are handmade artisan pieces. I use my tazas everyday and they are the best coffee cups I have ever had. The merchants are super friendly and helpful as well. Everyone was very welcoming and made it a great experience. I hope to be back in the future!

There were food, drink, and craft vendors selling in the outdoor market which made the ambiance very lively but not too crowded, as well as live music. Unfortunately, the vendors' food was underwhelming and expensive. I was coming from California and was excited to compare Mexican street food in Texas, but the options were very bland. Esquites - $12, 5 street tacos - $18, Chicken Gorditas -$11, Agua Fresca -$10 I did enjoy looking inside the markets (don't forget there are 2 different buildings for you to do your shopping). You can find some inexpensive souvenirs mixed in with some of higher price points.

If you've been to any flea market you should know what to expect. So why am I spending my time reviewing this flea market? Because I care about each and every one of you, that's why. :) The only thing you need to take away from this review is this: Go later in the day. They open at 10am, but a lot of the shops were still closed or just opening at 11:30am. What follows below is just filler for the Yelp Gods. Several stands had fresh produce - it was like a mini farmer's market. They have plenty of snack stands and beer is 3 bucks. Most of the stands are hotdogs, chicken nuggets, and popcorn, but if you take your time, you'll find two hidden gems with decent tacos, etc. The place is so big, you really have to hunt for them though. Cowboy boots at almost every other booth. Car parts - both new and used. Tools - both new and used. There's a pet shop with birds, bunnies, mice, hamsters, etc. Several shops with new furniture.
