Rice and beans with pork

Excellent food options at affordable prices-- and a great grocery area with fresh fruit!

Empanada de carne

Although I have only been here once; the Empanada I had at the Colombian kiosk alone will have me coming back the next time I am in town. I loved the layout of the place. You have your Spanish grocery section and the prepared foods are split up by countries; a mini trip around the Spanish world if you will. The masa for the empanada's are made from scratch, not the Goya stuff so that already is a plus. The mixture inside consisted of pulled beef, potatoes and seasoning; delicious. Also, don't forget to try the sauce. I would describe it as liquefied pico de gallo but it works so well with the empanada's! I could have easily eaten 3 or 4 of them. If I lived in this area; I'd be here for empanada's all the time.

So I walk in not sure what to expect, then I see a line of about 6 different latin restaurants of different ethnicities. Mexican, Salvadorian, Dominican..others i don't remember...heaven... The group ordered more food than was humanly possible to eat. Empanadas & Relleno de Papas, both excellent. The empanada was crispy on the outside, tinted yellow from the annatto added to the dough. Filled with a delicious mixture of beef & potatoes. $1.35 The Relleno de Papa was huge, a mixture of shredded beef & rice filled the center, a layer of mashed potato on the outside and then flash fried. The beef was tender, but the potato could have used a touch more salt. $3.00 I ordered a skewer of Chicharrón & Fried Plaintain that was to die for. The pork was crispy & fatty, and the texture of the plaintain paired nicely. I sampled others, the taquitos & tacos were excellent, although the beef on the taco was a bit gristly. The pictures do not do justice here, someone ordered a fried seafood platter that came out piled high and looked about 3 times bigger than what was pictured. All in all a great place to fill up your stomach, and not empty your wallet.

My two year old clearly "hated it" hahahah

Ordered 40 tacos, rice and beans last minutes for a Taco TWOsday birthday party. It was priced fair. They had my order hot and ready, on-time, with all the sides and everything bagged up and ready to go. Food was delicious and kept well. Chicken tacos, beans and rice we're the favorite. The steak tacos were a little tough and fatty in parts. Yummy but chewing on that catilage is a bit yucky. I would definitely order out or eat this again!

Best Mexican in Hartford hands down. El Tepeyac is as good as it gets! Also best grocery shopping for authentic, amazing food.

The Grocer at Parkville Market

The Grocer at Parkville Market

You won't know the market is there, because it is curiously NOT listed on the Parkville Market's…read morewebsite. But if you walk to the far left side of the market in search of the restrooms, you'll see a sign and a downward staircase that will bring you here. It carries food items from Spain, Italy, and the Mediterranean area. Lots of canned fish, pasta, oils, vinegars, crackers, sauces, olives , meats and cheese and the like. It reminded me a lot of the little grocery store inside the old Costa Del Sol restaurant. There were some freebie cheese and cracker samples, and a sweet and friendly young lady there to greet us. We were the only one in the store, and I sure hope the market adds The Grocer to their website and list of vendors to encourage more customers to visit. Surprising to us, was that the pricing was very reasonable!! We picked up a jar of fig jam for $6.49 and a big 25 ounce jar of Fra Diavlo sauce for $4.99. I am certain that every future trip we make to the Parkville Market will end with a walk down that staircase into the Grocer. Hope to see you there !

The Grocer, now upstairs at Parkville Market, is a very small specialty food market. They have…read morespecialty food items such as thin-sliced Iberico Chorizo, "intensely" flavored Spanish Olive Oil, Pure Vermont Maple Syrup, chocolate, black rice, fresh pasta, vinegars, cheese, jarred olives and peppers and splurge beverages. The Grocer is too small to provide a one stop shopping experience. Rather, you're more likely to go there when you're already at the Market and you need a few high end items for guests or niche home cooking. Example, if you're cooking a Spanish-themed meal and you want better sherry vinegar and Spanish olive oil than you can buy at your near home grocery, you can get that at the Parkville Market Grocer. That can be very convenient.
