Decided to do something a little less touristy. El Meco proved to be a Beautiful site of Mayan ruins. Employees very nice and happy to have visitors. Newer buildings, it looked like they just finished construction of the office and bathrooms. The ruins themselves are smaller but good explanation of what we were looking at, and a great learning experience. Easy and safe parking, and the price for the entrance was worth the trip. read more

We found this place by accident and so glad we did !It's a small place compared to some other ruins I've seen but it still beautiful and interesting to see. Its kind of hidden but alot of green so its not visible passing by the street but they have a big brown sign to look out for. Theses ruins are nice and inside its not so crowded so you can take some great pictures. There is a ton of iguanas and green to see also. They have clean and open restrooms for clients and its very reasonable priced. They didnt have any pamphlets available that I noticed but they do have some information infront of the plazas were you can read up on a little of the history. Also after your done with seeing the ruins walk a few steps and theres the beach so you can freshen up. read more

This is not easy to find, El Meco is very un-marketed for some reason. We followed the sign to Puerto Juarez off the highway, and went a bit South along the small road down the coast itself. We entered and were the only people there, until a minute later, when another American walks in, and happens to be a guy I know from my neighborhood back home! It's not nearly as big or impressive as the big name Mayan sites, but it's much cheaper, and much closer to Cancun. There was even a tour guide there that gave us a nice tour for not too much money. read more

I really like this site, was not a busy site like other ones. I was able to walk in my own and just wonder around, with no one person pushing or hurried. The gentleman in the Entrance was such a nice convention , highly recomended read more

The address for El Meco on Yelp was wrong and led me astray. I got to the correct site about 5 minutes too late. Such a bummer! At least now I know, the best way to get to the archeological zone is to take an R-1 bus to the last stop at Puerto Juárez. (Make sure to ask the R-1 driver if he stops there as not all of them do, you might have to switch to a different R-1 bus in downtown.) From last bus stop in Puerto Juárez, take a taxi to El Meco site, shouldn't be more than 100 pesos. You have to take a taxi for the last short stretch because I don't think bus goes that far.) You will see a stretch of ocean on your right as you drive up there. And that's the way I know of now. Also be sure to ask the exact price beforehand. (I've had difficulties with bus drivers that give you wrong change (less) and a taxi driver that drove really slow so I got to the site right when it closed (so that I would have to get a return ride back to downtown.) read more

El Meco ruins were very impressive. They are off the beaten path and less travels by tourists. We were the only ones there. Very impressive and the grounds are beautiful. Not as large as Tulum but it is more peaceful also. Well worth a visit but you will probably need your own car! read more
