I wish I could join the chorus of 4 and 5 star reviews. Looking for a restaurant with atmosphere?…read more You won't find it here. My first warning was the decrepit sign over the door in a dilapidated strip center. But, as the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover." The food was good. Not great. My usual order is fajitas, this time a chicken, steak, and chicken combo. The plate was served sizzling. Served with 3 small tortillas and the usual fixin's. El Mexicano doesn't serve any beans other than refried, so, no option for black beans, pinto or borracho. The shrimp in the dish were perfect, the chicken was dried out and there were about 6 little strips of steak. The grilled onions and peppers were very good. My wife's shrimp dish was very salty. She prefers the interpretation of Shrimp Mexicana at others Mexican restaurants. And for good measure, because we asked for some lime to squeeze on the shrimp and they tacked on $2 to the bill. But what really resulted in my barely average review was the cleanliness of El Mexicano; or rather, the lack of it. You'll notice a yellow bucket that hangs on the wall in the dining room, yes, in full sight of diners. I witnessed a server drop something on the floor, grab a cloth from the bucket and clean the floor. Then, she returned the cleaning cloth to the bucket. Moments later, another server used the same cloth to clean tables! The health department would have a hissy fit if they saw this. Worse, when I mentioned this to the manager, he was indifferent. I know he understood me, he just didn't care. If the manager is so indifferent to such an obvious health hazard, I can't fathom what goes on in the kitchen. El Mexicano is a "one and done" for us.

But I felt La Lupita had slipped a bit. Initial service was excellent, we were greeted and seated promptly. Drinks were served and our order was taken. But once the food was brought to the table, our server was nowhere to be found. Refill for ice tea? Nope. We ordered one set of corn and one set of flour tortillas and got two orders of corn. It took us quite a while to find the server to get the error corrected. The complementary chips and salsa were way off. The chips were stale and they switched to a green salsa. Admittedly, a personal preference, but I liked the red better. My wife enjoyed her usual- camarones Mexicano. Served sizzling and perfectly done. I don't recall the mixed fajitas (my usual) as being so greasy. Again, served hot. Lots of peppers, onions, & grilled tomatoes. No jalapeños. I could have asked for some as a side and I'm sure they would accommodate. I also found it odd that La Lupita doesn't offer any beans other than refried. We asked for black beans or pinto or borracho. They're not offered. Yet they were able to serve refried black beans instead of the usual borracho or pinto refried version. Prices, inevitably, were up since our last visit. La Lupita is still a favorite for authentic Mexican food. We just caught them on an off day and it was still way ahead of most Mexican restaurants.

The server was very friendly and service was prompt. The painted art on the furniture and walls was excellent. I ordered a chicken bowl with rice, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and on the side was red enchilada sauce. The chicken was wonderfully seasoned and I only was able to eat half of it. My husband ordered the Texana fajitas, which was a trio of meats (steak, shrimp and chicken). My daughter ordered a Grand burrito. We all left satisfied. I did not get a photo of the hub's or daughter's food before they started devouring them, but I did get a picture of my bowl.

Delicious salsa seasoned well with a good amount of cilantro to give it a nice flavor and just enough heat to keep in interesting. Chips were served warm, fresh and crispy-crunchy. They have a very wide menu featuring a great array of Mexican specialties along with the more traditional Mexican-American fare that most people are used to. Since this was our first visit, we played it safe and each tried a good old reliable quesadilla; one grilled chicken, one grilled steak. Both were HUGE and delicious. The steak was seasoned nicely and was still juicy despite being cut small. The chicken I had was flavorful and juicy, as well, made even better with the addition of some the the house salsa. I had rice as a side item and it was probably the best I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I'm not sure what they season it with, but I could eat a whole bowl of it by itself. My wife had a Coke; I stuck with water. As an added bonus, when it came time to pay the bill, we were told the older couple behind us had picked up our check. To whomever you are---thank you. We'll definitely be back. P.S. One caveat; the place CAN get noisy when filled with....millennials...who have no idea what an "inside voice" is.

They start you with these funky fried crisps. No salsa or pico-but on the bright side you don't fill up with chips. Good thing, because the portions are ginormous! It's rare I can't finish a meal, but my shredded beef with mole was more than enough for a takeout box. I ordered the platter, so my meal came with rice and refried beans. We had the leftovers for lunch the following day. My wife ordered two alacart items. Shrimp cerviche and a chicken taco. Both well prepared. And as a side bonus, the tortillas were outstanding. I'm not a fan of corn tortillas, but these home made gems had flavor and didn't fall apart like packaged ones. Same with the crispy corn shells for the tostada. Great crunch and real flavor. Beer was served cold along with a frosted mug and a slice of lime. Everything is made to order. One fella was the chief, cook & bottle washer. And waiter. He speaks English when he sees you struggling with the menu. He made us feel very welcome. This is a down to earth diner that hasn't seen any updating since day one, but the food is excellent, the restrooms are clean and the service was perfectomundo.

I was able to explore the menu but I knew I had walked in for a ceviche. Glad waitress clarified the typo on large shrimp ceviche's price, which immediately translated to honesty. Thei give you a complimentary savory broth with hints of seafood flavor and potatoes which is a welcoming opening. The flavor was excellent the tostadas are like home made non commercial, loved them. Their give you fresh lime or already squeezed natural lime juice. I had a campechano (mixed) taco and a pastor taco. Which they have for .99 on Tuesdays so I will be a regular on Tuesdays too. There is parking on the front and on one of the sides of the place. The team was quick with food, attentive to all needs and very professional and friendly. And the price value is amazing. There are many items I still have to try but it is in my top 3 list for Mexican food in Kentuckiana!

I'm sitting here scratching my head as why because at best, this is a 3-star place and barely at that. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. I've had much better Mexican food at other places. I ordered the Chori Pollo which is chorizo on top of grilled chicken with cheese and white rice. My order was taken down wrong and I ended being given something entirely different. They did end up making it correct for me. The horchata I ordered was really good and one of the better ones I've had from a place. My server was nice despite taking down my order entirely wrong. The interior is nice. It the music is absolutely too loud and constantly playing so you may need to talk a bit louder than usual if you want to have a conversation with anyone dining with you. I can't see myself returning to this establishment and one that I wouldn't recommend. I had to fight with flies the entire time I was dining which added to the rather displeasing time I was here. The prices for the food isn't too terrible and pretty standard if you've been to most other Mexican restaurants that have a similar menu. Do yourself a favor and find another, much better place for Mexican food than here.
