Eh... if you have other options, it's not a bad idea to skip el Local. The drinks were small and pricey, the apps were tried were Ok. Fried cheese was basic but good, but a very small portion. The papas que pican were boring and not crispy or nicely plated. We won't be returning. The service left quite a bit to be desired, with a frigid greeting and then watching employees mix our drinks and pour some of it in to a shot glass for their staff. We celebrated our wedding anniversary in Vieques. Our original plan was to go to Biekes Bistro which was listed as open on all internet websites, but when we arrived it was closed. We found El Local and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed! The food was fantastic! Well seasoned and flavorful. We ordered: -the triangulo for an appetizer -el gallito with arroz y habichuelas -garlic shrimp with arroz mamposteado -tostones There were some concerns: -the food took awhile to come out. Not sure if it was the kitchen or the waitress. -the shrimp dish only came with 5 small shrimp. It was surprising as it looked like it was missing substance. These were not large or jumbo shrimp. - the tostones were rock hard. It almost felt like they had been cooked and fried before and then retired/heated for our meal. I ordered Gallito. $23 for two small pieces of unseasoned grilled chicken, with plain white rice, and a small bowl of beans. Not what is pictured on Yelp. I went with my partner while vacationing in Vieques. It was easily the best restaurant we ate at. Everything we ordered was delicious.

This place was absolutely delicious. We ordered the malecón (fried whole snapper with churrasco and a mashed potato, spicy churrasco) - so good! We also ordered el chuleton (tender pork chop with yellow rice and green beans) - absolutely delicious. We also ordered the two desserts on the menu and didn't leave a single spoonful left. It took more than 30 minutes to get out appetizers, when we ordered the food it took another 45 minutes and it wasn't that great. The only good thing was our waitress she was very friendly and the mojitos were really good. Other than that I'd suggest you just come here for drinks and get food somewhere else. read more

Look no further!! After trying a few restaurants in the area my boyfriend and I decided to pop into el local in hopes to find authentic Puerto Rican food. The ambiance is amazing, the staff wonderful and the food - we couldn't get enough of it! We had the conch/steak appetizers, steak and fish plate, and the yuca (the best yuca I've ever had, so buttery and melts in your mouth!) the drinks are incredibly creative and delicious - Ivan is a true artist! He was out of mezcal when we ordered the mezcal drink and so he smoked the glass for the extra smoky flavor in our tequila drink. Much appreciated! Fantastic hidden gem. The drinks are unique and well crafted. We had the El Triangulo and caldo de mama for appetizers. The Caldo de mama is a seafood broth with a cornbread dumpling. It soothes the soul and I fully believe it will cure all that ails. For our mains we enjoyed the Punta Mula, El Chuletón and the El Malecon. I cannot stress enough the deliciousness of the sauces mixed with various components. We will eat here again before our trip is over. read more

This place was recommended by a local property manager, so we gave it a shot. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was ok. Our group enjoyed the red snapper. My daughter and I both got the chuleton, a pork loin chop with honey glaze. My daughter's was good, mine was way overcooked (shoe leather). The beans and rice were delicious and the skirt steak was good. The rum punch was very good. The atmosphere was strange inside, with a loud movie playing on the television, competing with music that was also too loud for a dinner crowd. We asked the waitress to turn the tv down, which she did, but then the music was turned up even louder. There definitely was no talking during dinner. There is outside seating, which was probably better from a noise perspective, but it was raining so we were stuck indoors. read more

The food was tasty both times I visited. Once I sat in the open air dining room w beautiful mangrove tree and murals. The next time I sat in the glass- walled dining room facing the street. The decor is all hand crafted and I am pretty sure the bar in the dining room is made out of an old small gauge steam locomotive or other boiler tank. Fo NOT expect fast service. We were a group of six to start off. We were never told about the 20% tip for groups above 6 people. I have no problem leaving 20% if.... and only if... 1. the server earns that 20%, which did not happen, if I say he came 3 times to the table I am being very generous. 2. It says on the menu... which it might and it might not, like I told the server, if you can read whatever it says on the menu I would pay double. The menu is unreadable and therefore ilegal to try and i force anythong it says on it. I payed the 20% because I have no problem paying for it even if the food and service was subpar. I payed it becauae I would rather keep the high ground when the staff is rude and very ill equiped to handle client complaints. They blamed the owner for a bad menu and us, the clients, for eating there. that was the treatment we got. I HAVE NEVER ben accused and told it was MY fault the menu was poorly printed and elaborated and my fault for picking this place to eat. Our server let us know thatn NOW we know the rules for next time. We told her there would not be a next time to which she replied that was great. I hobestly aske everybody in Vieques to avoid this place. Stay away.... no good!. And its grwat that they dont expect me back.... I would rather stay hungry than eat here. read more

Sat here for over an hour after quickly getting an app. The table next to us got up, told us they had been waiting two hours (eeeek) and our mild concern moved to a it's now after 8pm and every other option will be starting to close soon concern. They assured us we were up next and it would be "10 minutes". 15 minutes pass, they came out to tell us they didn't have arepas (we ordered them over an hour ago), okay nbd but why only finding out now. I asked if fish of the day was fresh - it was. Then I'm pretty sure I saw them take a frozen filet from the freezer which bore a striking resemblance to the frozen filets I get at Costco. Then, it was "5 more minutes". Okay, 5 min pass. Now we give up. Server checks kitchen one more time, no food to be seen but "it's coming." We paid for what we had and went to the grocery store, which thankfully was open. In summary, don't do it. read more

If I could give zero stars to this restaurant, I would. We were with another couple and we both ordered the whole, deep fried snapper, which I had been looking forward too all day, since the pictures on other people's reviews looked great. The snapper that was served to the other couple was perfect. Ours was about half the size and seriously overcooked. It was not until the other couple raved about how delicious the fish cheeks were that I realized just how badly our fish was cooked. Our fish had no cheeks, only a very aggressively boney countenance. The server was not able to do anything to make things better other than to reduce the cost of the dish by $5. The money was not the issue, the issue was the quality of the food. The cook was too embarrassed to talk to me about how she could serve two such disparate dishes to the same table. We went with our family of five for Christmas Eve dinner on our Vieques vacation. The place is magical and awesome. Creative and delicious cocktails began the experience, but the food with its modern flair and excellent quality really made the night. The atmosphere is beautiful with comfortable all outdoor seating surrounded by a great vibe and energy (the spontaneous Christmas Eve fireworks that could be viewed certainly helped).
